The new VW Beetle is perfect for those seeking a retro cool soft top whilst still enjoying a certain degree of practicality and everyday comfort. The Coupe was introduced in 2012, with the cabriolet joining the range in 2013. There's plenty of different specs to suit all tastes and budgets, but thankfully this one that we are in today has head turning looks for the right reasons and has managed to impress us at CarBuyer.
And that's because it really does look the part with its non threatening smiley face and distinctive bulbous wheel arches. The small spoiler on the rear plays up to its cheeky and playful side, too.
But first and foremost we are interested in its practical side. Despite not having a huge amount of space -- which is to be expected from a car like this -- the folding roof doesn't affect bootspace in any way thanks to the fact it folds on the outside of the boot. Thanks to this, you will always get this much room [point], no matter where the roof is.
And although quite cramped, these seats are brilliant for occasional use -- as opposed to having none at all.
The first thing I noticed when I got in this car was the combination of tones, there's some tasteful shiny painted, colour coded, trim here, soft touch materials, which enhance the overall quality and the retro theme we saw on the outside is very much present in here too. There are six equipment levels available however the mid-level Design provides everything you really need including air-conditioning and DAB radio, while the options list includes a touchscreen sat-nav and a upgraded Fender sound system. The 50s, 60s and 70s versions are a bit more expensive, but if you want retro flair, those are the cars for you. Anyway, enough tech, let's get this roof down.
It can be operated of speeds up to 31mph so you can put the roof up and down as much as the weather fluctuates on your journey.
Bringing me on to my next point, it isn't noticeably noisier to travel in than the coupe thanks to the multi layered fabric hood that provides plenty of sound insulation.
Bringing me on to my next point, there is hardly any wind buffeting with the roof down, as long as you have installed the easy-to-fit wind deflector thus allowing me to talk to you about how economical this car is.
As expected there are a number of different petrol and diesel engines to choose from. However the most economical is the 1.6 Bluemotion Diesel returning a claimed 62.8 miles to the gallon and emitting just 118g/km of CO2. All can be teamed up with a manual or Automatic DSG gearbox, apart from the one that we're in today - the 1.4 twincharged engine only comes in manual and that returns 41.5 miles to the gallon and certainly has enough pace to complement the comfortable ride.
And that does bring me on to the Beetle's downsides. While it drives much better than the outgoing model, mainly due to the fact that it shares its platform with the previous generation Golf and is just as much fun as the Coupe due to extra bracing, it isn't quite as much fun as the practicality smaller MINI Convertible. The biggest sour grape in the Beetle fruit bowl though is the price. It's £2,000 more expensive than the MINI, and that's quite a lot!
Well that pretty much sums up the new Beetle Convertible, it's an easy to live with retro inspired cool soft top that turns heads for all the right reasons.
I really feel bad for you. To read some of these comments. It's pretty sick, it's a car review, not pornography. Carbuyer should disable comments on future videos, I feel sickened by the inappropriate things that are being said.
I asked on your site for this review only 2 weeks ago, this'll be my next car. thank you! ;)
yep, rear seats are good for occasional use - like around town or 15 minute rides. Certainly wouldn't want to be back there for a long(er) trip.
VW Beetle + Rebecca Jackson = cuteness confirmed
I’ll second that. I’m up here watching and enjoying videos of cars I don’t even care about.
An interesting review. I have one complaint. You guys need to put up videos more often, we need our dose of Carbuyer :)
Becca, you made my day.
I've got this car with cream soft top! Drives like a dream and during summer it was so much fun!
What a great little car! I don't usually care for drop tops but this is fun
What's the point in a convertible without wind? That's what makes a convertible so much fun and gives you that feeling of freedom. When you're surrounded by windows and deflectors, you lose that.
Love the retro look works very well, well done VW!
@magna59
G'day Bob, thanks for steering me here... That "Wind Deflector" is a species of Turbulator. It's a Fence, to hold a bubble of Still-Air behind the Windscreen... Without the Fence, the Slipstream over the windscreen would curve down between the Front Seats & at head-height... With the Fence there, the Slipstream goes straight over the "static bubble" & all the "buffet" (Turbulent Drag) pulls on the Fence, not on front Seatbacks & occupants...
Ciao !
Perfect summer car for me , loving it so much im starting saving for it as of NOW :D
Mine is Volkswagen Eos, but this one looks good too
que tal salió el beetle? si te gusto?
Built in Mexico, sold all around the world, I remember seating in the back seat of the last gen Beetle cabrio and it was impossible to ride in it! this seems to be much better for rear passengers!
Uh, sure she's pretty, but falling in love with someone you've never actually met... what that tells me is YOU need to get outside and spend time in the real world. The internet is not the right place for you.
Who are you talking to? LOL!
Very good review!
I like it with the top down...the car looks pretty good with the top down too
Rebecca should buy this Beetle. Suits her so perfectly
Yay she looks good in that
WANT TO SEE YOU EXPLAINING THE VW Scirocco R
what it does is that the wind goes upward the windshield and creates a wind spiral in the cabin (if you have ever ben in convertile you know that the wind inside goes to the front and thats because of it),the wind deflector disturbs that wind spiral, making the air coming from the windshield go over it and not enterin the cabin and that makes it also less noisy
She is so a pretty, charmed young lady
What’s the previous model like ?
Does it have a wind deflector ?
I can’t afford this model...
I saw identical car in the VW showroom floor, really cool car, but VW needs to get their reliability factor up.
In nearly 400 videos not one of the presenters has done a Woollard. If you do not know what it is, please google Wooollarding. It is even taking off in Germany now.
Rebecca fighting the pervs! mentioning the 6 ft dad as back up :D
Didn't know about that :) Nice, they are one amongst the best car reviewers on the internet :)
I like the wheels.. Retro, yet modern.
Very cute, I'd have this over the weird looking Mini Cooper any day, but the Audi a3 cabriolet is a tough competitor. The tiny boot is really the compromise with these cars.
+Supremo Audi A3 cabriolet isn't a competitor because Volkswagen owns Audi so they are still getting the money
+Darius Stancioiu It is a competitor. Just because VW owns Audi doesn't mean their cars do not compete with each other.
Scott Sherman Yeah, you're right. Thanks!
i'm not sure, but i think its because the wind goes more over the car than in the car.
i think it's the same thing when you stand in from of a wall and the wind blows toward you,
but i could be wrong
Whatever you're doing Rebecca it's working.
I really want one but is it true they have really bad blind spots?
how long does it take to make one of these review videos?
I have not seen many videos about Acura. Is it because Acura is not available in Europe?
Fun and interesting review
love the car
and the agents accent
Don't forget an Imperial gallon is 1.2 US gallons.
You turn heads for all the right reasons.
That is your opinion. I use to own just one car, so it should be fun and useful at the same time.
she is just too adorable!
the car is cute, and the young lady is so cute. I love both
It's not just the car that has head turning looks
Looks good!
Great review!
I love her accent and she really cute!!
the perfect car for England's always raining weather!
Its been 9 years and i come back time to time to see this review just to see this beautiful woman.
I will be back again in a month or so.
Stop being so creepy
After watching this video, I m in love if Corse not with the car !!!
wind deflectors are stupid... nothing better in a convertible than a good backwind... If you're planning to use the wind deflector .maybe better off with a sunroof.
Yeah, I own a hardtop new beetle. my profile picture was a stock photo I found in the internet. I don’t really like convertibles.
GORGEUS......BECKY!!
OMG!! I WANT.......HER!!
Curb your thirst
what is the wind deflector for? can someone please explain for me?
In a normal car wind flows over the windshield, follows the roof to the back of the car and onto the trunklid area. In a convertible it flows over the windshield as normal, but with no roof the air drops down about where the rear seats are and causes turbulence behind the driver and passenger. The windscreen thing diffuses the air and reduces turbulence.
@@jbm0866 yo 9 years lmaooo. Thank you anw
@@travisbutterflydamn, 10 years ago, but still you replies.
Truly pure Determination
I don't like the front style of the car, but the interior and rear is quite good!
With the wind deflector the air go straight to the back and move on but without it the air would get inside the car and mess everything up like your hair and stuff, that's why rebacca's hair is not moving because she is putting it on,i hope you can understand me my english is not that great :p
why did volkswagen implement what they messed up on the audi a4 interior. armrest design over on of the cup holder, and also every time you pull the E-brake you knock the armrest up? 3:10
I love how the British avoid calling an actual windscreen (screen thing behind the front seats) a windscreen! It's transparent for more than visibility reasons, it reduces turbulence by diffusing the air through a screen...same principle as a screen door or window screen on your house let some but not all the breeze inside. I'd say a solid piece of glass in front of your face "shields" from all wind..and if it doesnt you need a new one😂😂 While I'm on the subject, boot is the style of shoe our lovely presenter was wearing in this video whereas "trunk" goes back to the early days of motoring where storage space was literally a wooden travel trunk (chest) strapped to the rear of the car. Bonnet vs hood is a wash since both are head coverings, but one is a bit more masculine than the other.😂 /rant
She isn't "avoiding" calling it a windscreen, it just makes no sense, "windscreen" is defined as "the window at the front of a car".
@@archiecrowder1237 I just explained to you in detail why "windshield" makes more sense. The other differences don't bother me as much, but as someone who grew up in the American southwest with screen doors (installed in front of the actual house door) and screens on my bedroom window (keeps bugs out while allowing the breeze to flow freely) I have very different ideas about what a "screen" is. When I hear the word "windscreen" my mind automatically pictures a piece of steel mesh in front of me, not glass.😊
The return of the Banana !
Brilliant color!! Love ut
Due to boring facts about air pressure the air that blows over the top of the screen curls back under itself. The screen stops that air from coming into the cabin from behind, reducing buffeting.
I would want one of these but these have kept their value waaay too well. I live in Finland and they never sold these here so I'd have to get one from Germany and even the earliest ones are still 12k which is waay too much whereas you can get a good same year Beetle coupe for like 5k.
Nice, my Golf Clubs will fit and there is room for a Convertible in the Garage.
I would test your clubs with this car before buying one..the trunk is tiny and so is the pass-through even with the rear seats folded. If I had this car I know I'd mostly fill the trunk with one decent size roller bag, the rest would have to sit in the backseats...still in the upright position though.
You look amazing!!
How does that wind deflector work when you have passengers in that back
I was expecting a VW Beetle cabriolet review, what a strange video - I didn't see 1 VW in that video. No complaints though :D
Strangely enough it actually looks like a nice car! The new shape Beetle is better than its ever been and if I was either a woman or gay i'd probably buy one but seeing that im neither of the two then I guess that's not going to happen! ;)
I liked the name tag in the bottom better. Not as intrusive because it doesn't block the presenters face.
One thing you didn't mention is that nor the build quality nor the cabin materials are on the same level as in the golf which is a bit of a disappointment.
I want this car soooo bad!
reply
How can it deflect the wind? It's behind you. Or is it supposed to deflect wind when reversing? Isn't the wind the whole point in a convertible anyway?
It just reduces the turbulence that occurs behind the front seats in most convertibles. Even with that thing in place and windows up there will be plenty of fresh air, difference is you'll be able to talk to your passenger without shouting.
Car n Beauty both r Stunning😂
Racing driver - petrol head - cute girl = dream woman :)
Tell me why brits always leave the windows up wit the top down
I soo want this as my first car
And the passengers sit under the wind deflector? :)))
why is mat not uploading the video
the best review of this beautiful girl!:)
Quel bonheur que cette video
and it looks a 100 times better than the mini convertible
Its been a week since they have uploaded
diesel on a cabriolet, SRSLY?
Gawd. she's so classy
She is very careful in driving and you must not disturb her
Becky dahling the reason youre not there any more is DIESEL ENGINES ,
I miss you , where are you ????
sputnic she is on a channel called telegraph cars
really nice car :) at the same time too expensive for me..
is it "coop" or "coo pay"?
ok so you cannot sit 4 people when using the wind deflector.Nice
Less videos probably due to both Rebecca and Mat planning/filming their new TV show, I Want That Car :)
Awesome!
they use gallons in the UK?
Yes, Imperial Gallons (4.55 litres), not US ones (3.8 litres), but only when talking about economy, we buy it in Litres
Damn, this woman is so attractive!
With all due respect, you must be one of three things:
-Blind
-Gay
-Troll
:)
Warren Buitendag , yea, I guess he's a gay troll
Warren Buitendag yeah he is a blind gay troll
Warren Buitendag ahem
Guess you can't sit in the back and have the wind thing install.
her boots color matching the car very nice
I don't know why everyone hates this car,it looks terrible in that color sure, but in black or red i think it's cute :P
Good short review. Shame about all tne desperate Dan's on here though who can't keep their minds on the review
...the Mini is cramped and has nowhere near the air of a comfortable cruiser. There is only one choice and that is the Beetle!
Really good review. And although I don't wish to sound like everyone else who comments on Rebecca's videos, a rather nice bottom too.
Looks like someone's giving us a thumbs up at 3:54!
I love Beetle
she always finds a storage space for her banana. 😂
far more car than the mini convertible and worth the extra 2k in my view.
Lookin good.
Never thought I would say this about a woman but i dont want her to stop talking
Way better video. Some videos are way too short!
