    Great match. Saive played like a penholder, attacking with his forehand from everywhere, while Waldner was often forced to defend. While it's obvious that Waldner's injury was important, it does not take away anything from Saive's amazing win (the best match he has ever played).

    I have the uncut version. Waldner injured his finger in the 2nd or 3rd game and had to have it iced. Not saying that Saive wouldn't have won anyway but if one sees the entire video it's apparent that the injury affected Waldner's game.

    • @krzysztoflaskowski6110
      @krzysztoflaskowski6110 4 роки тому +2

      Thats what i hace been thinking since it happened back then.
      Waldi has never ever even mentioned it publicly how bad it has affected him ...He is such a great sportsman
      After that cut, he clearly struggled with his grip until the end, and as you said, its difficult to say if he would have won it if it hasnt happened, judging by the opening 10 points, where Saive moved to 8-2 lead and Janne still managed to come back and win that game clearly indicates that he was capable of winning that match if that unlucky cut has not happened.
      Take care mate 🙂

    Beat or be beaten! One of the most entertaining encounters ever. It contains just about everything you possibly can expect or imagine from a good match. The ruse at 3:59 with a sudden and unexpected change of pace is the kind of behaviour you rarely see anyone else but Waldner or Roger Federer perform.

      Now its all about power and speed

      I have nothing against the 40mm ball, on the other end i am still not sold on the new polly ball, but spectacle is still here the real downside is the standardisation of the styles ( less choppers and feeling style players).

    The thing that really jumps out to me is the pronounced forward swinging motion of Saive and to a lesser extent Waldner. Huge hip rotation and turning of the trunk. Compare it to the way Boll swings (the racket ends above his eyes), and most European players after him. Huge difference. What you see here is a much more aggressive style-it's far easier to play forehand over the table in the first 5 balls. And this at a time when attacking serves+receives was much more difficult, with hidden motions and a spinnier ball. Something to think about.

    • @dickn.ormous1064
      @dickn.ormous1064 2 роки тому +2

      Saive had the best forehand when attacking short balls on the table but overall Waldner had better forehand technique.For example Saive had poor results against choppers 'cause his forehand against chop was played only with the arm.Also Waldner could utilize a much greater variety of stances whereas you'll never see any foreward momentum from Saive when pivoting.

  • @Galimah
    @Galimah 4 роки тому

    very different from today. these guys could crack balls from the hips. speed ---> spin.

  • @Fontsman
    @Fontsman 4 роки тому +2

    Waldy injured his index finger and it was definitely bothering him. Also he was too passive and allowed Saive to get the first attack too often.

    The 38mm ball was a little bit too small. The new 40mm ball is perfect. Although I do like the 21 point games though. And getting to serve five times in a row. You got time to get into a rhythm while serving. Not saying the new system is bad or anything. I like it. But I know people who were great servers of the ball and are not able to play as strong with the new shorter games and only being able to serve two times.
