Great match. Saive played like a penholder, attacking with his forehand from everywhere, while Waldner was often forced to defend. While it's obvious that Waldner's injury was important, it does not take away anything from Saive's amazing win (the best match he has ever played).
What a great game !! Probably the best level of Jean-Michel Saive in his career. Super partie, un niveau hallucinant. Probablement le niveau le plus élevé dans la carrière de Jean-Michel Saive.
I have the uncut version. Waldner injured his finger in the 2nd or 3rd game and had to have it iced. Not saying that Saive wouldn't have won anyway but if one sees the entire video it's apparent that the injury affected Waldner's game.
Thats what i hace been thinking since it happened back then. Waldi has never ever even mentioned it publicly how bad it has affected him ...He is such a great sportsman After that cut, he clearly struggled with his grip until the end, and as you said, its difficult to say if he would have won it if it hasnt happened, judging by the opening 10 points, where Saive moved to 8-2 lead and Janne still managed to come back and win that game clearly indicates that he was capable of winning that match if that unlucky cut has not happened. Take care mate 🙂
Beat or be beaten! One of the most entertaining encounters ever. It contains just about everything you possibly can expect or imagine from a good match. The ruse at 3:59 with a sudden and unexpected change of pace is the kind of behaviour you rarely see anyone else but Waldner or Roger Federer perform.
Great match, and great play by Jean-Michel Saive. I really think the upgrade of the ball size has changed many things, watching this match and the style of Ma long f.e.
U are right, i add more, i think 40mm ball killed table tennis Its all about power now Spin control of the ball was crucial before Now its all about power and speed
I have nothing against the 40mm ball, on the other end i am still not sold on the new polly ball, but spectacle is still here the real downside is the standardisation of the styles ( less choppers and feeling style players).
The thing that really jumps out to me is the pronounced forward swinging motion of Saive and to a lesser extent Waldner. Huge hip rotation and turning of the trunk. Compare it to the way Boll swings (the racket ends above his eyes), and most European players after him. Huge difference. What you see here is a much more aggressive style-it's far easier to play forehand over the table in the first 5 balls. And this at a time when attacking serves+receives was much more difficult, with hidden motions and a spinnier ball. Something to think about.
Saive had the best forehand when attacking short balls on the table but overall Waldner had better forehand technique. For example Saive had poor results against choppers 'cause his forehand against chop was played only with the arm. Also Waldner could utilize a much greater variety of stances whereas you'll never see any foreward momentum from Saive when pivoting.
+Matheus Bilik Nope table wasnt bigger and net wasnt shorter. At this time it was recorded in 4:3, and this video is 16:9.....thats why it gives this false impression to you.
Nothing really. it's just there's 1+ billion people in China, and TT is their national sport - so bigger pool of talent. Europe as well as other counties love football too much.
The 38mm ball was a little bit too small. The new 40mm ball is perfect. Although I do like the 21 point games though. And getting to serve five times in a row. You got time to get into a rhythm while serving. Not saying the new system is bad or anything. I like it. But I know people who were great servers of the ball and are not able to play as strong with the new shorter games and only being able to serve two times.
I got to give it to Saive, he beat the best player in history fair & square, but his intensity is annoying! Did you see the veins popping out of his head.
Agreed. Waldner would later talk about in an interview how Saive's intensity makes it even more difficult to play him. Waldner compared it to Borg playing McEnroe.

it was... when watching matches like this i get so angry that ittf changed game the forever please bring back speedglue and 38mm balls
+Galimah agreed brother.
@@Galimah Agreed.
No kidding these two are legends
Best tabletennis in history and for ever.....
Ml vs fzd is more interesting.
@@kuchikibyakuya7697 ML vs FZD mostly consists of banana flicks and tons of errors.FZD has one of the ugliest styles ever with all that squatting.
@@dickn.ormous1064 lol. Your name define your attitude. Ml and fzd can beat these two easily.
I just love these old school matches with legends of the sport...Thx!

The commentary: "Yes!" "Good!" "Well done!" "Well played!" "Wow!" "Great!"

Jean Michel Saive - Great player, legend! And Jan Ove Waldner too, block-master
I like how the old 38mm ball had more variation or variety. Due to it having a lot more spin.
What a match Waldner played very good i think but Saive played unbelivable here like a machine and i say this as a Swede.
ttposter beautiful work, was a great game, it's very rare to see old videos like this in good quality Congratulations
What a game. Didn't realise saive was so good
greatest time in TT!
Saive was a topspin madman back in the day!
6:55 just wow. Never seen JM Saive play like this. Wonderful upload, many thanks!
the best table tennis video i ever watched....thx for uploading.
La vitesse de la fin d'échange 6:47.... puissant !
Superbe match, merci
wow, that surprises me alot! still no. 1 player.... love Saive so much when i was in university, remind me of school times, amazing!
Speed glue, 38mm balls, cool curves.
Epic days, epic match.
Great find!! Amazing Match!! Thanks a lot my friend!!! :)
Saive - best tt player ever!!!
what a match!! thanks for posting this amazing match :)
Great match from the good ol days !
great match and i love Saive since that video of The best table tennis match of history
This angle is great !
JO has got beside his smooth technics the most brutal smash ever.
Hand-eye cordination. But the game have changed so much since 1994.
Great match, and great play by Jean-Michel Saive.
I really think the upgrade of the ball size has changed many things, watching this match and the style of Ma long f.e.
so great to see a tt match from the year of my birth :)
Absolutely! it's epic! i never seen so amazing match again since 11points game.
11 points game make table tennis ugly.......
U are right, i add more, i think 40mm ball killed table tennis
Its all about power now
Spin control of the ball was crucial before
Now its all about power and speed
I'd like the 38 mm ball to be returned. It's uncomparably faster than the new ploy ball.
i don't like the new poly balls. what's next, full sized tennis balls?
The reason why they changed was because the ball too fast and too small for TV cameras to pick it up, you know didn't have HD and 4K TV's back then...
Me I prefer the news plastic balls.
38 mm ball was all about the speed and precision
40 mm ball is all about power
I have nothing against the 40mm ball, on the other end i am still not sold on the new polly ball, but spectacle is still here the real downside is the standardisation of the styles ( less choppers and feeling style players).
Nice footwork from Saive. Great match.
Great match !
2 big legends 💣
Wow! Saive destroyed Waldner. Great match. Thanks!
It was Saive who did all the running.
Waldner is really good!
Waldner, the only European player who won against Chinese players, Saive, the only player who won against Waldner 😀
legend forever!!!
Saive puro corazón!!!
Really nice match =D

very different from today. these guys could crack balls from the hips. speed ---> spin.
Waldy injured his index finger and it was definitely bothering him. Also he was too passive and allowed Saive to get the first attack too often.
Is this the final when Waldner was playing with a injured finger? It was a handicap for him if I recall correctly.
3:06 Magnifique
Saive the warrior!
Since what year did they switch from 38mm to 40mm balls?
Well done Saive for winning, but Waldner controlled the match and was on another level. Waldner made Saive run a marathon in this match.
so many lucky shots from saive. Shots like this he never played before or after this
How could they control this speed?
The ball catapults extremely fast....Look!
Training.
waldner actually got a set the way saive was playing...
No problem Kostas! :-)
was the table bigger ? the net also seems to be shorter...

38MM celuloid balls, speed glue.
2:22 !!! Wow
Europe used to have lots of very great players. What is wrong with table tennis in Europe now?
Nothing really. it's just there's 1+ billion people in China, and TT is their national sport - so bigger pool of talent. Europe as well as other counties love football too much.
Equipment changed. Now, to be a top player, you have to be very good at attacking the ball, and the Chinese adapted very well.
Oh! Still on LIVE!

38mm balls are freaking fasttttt
Yes, but how much faster were Waldner's blocks?
The referee called him Sa-eeve. Sad you cannot pronounce a world nr 1's name even remotely proper as a referee in an European Champs final!
think you're the only one who cares about that
Waldy injured his finger and it definitely affected his play.

Waldner played well but the finger was bothering him..agreed?
Yes.
Lol the year i had born

Fair and square? Waldner injured fingers early and was wiping blood all match.
