Bill Maher and Deepak Chopra randomly riff on true identity, preparing for the end, being chased by the monster that is death, Mother Theresa’s crisis of faith, Bill and Deepak’s spiritual journeys, the morality of spiritual transcendence, how the placebo effect is real, and how we are all just playing a part.

I love that Deepak Chopra does not let him interrupt. Usually when I listen to Bill he totally takes over the conversation and people don't get to finish their thought or story. This was a breath of fresh air that Deepak put him in his place!!!

I couldn't agree more. He does it with all his guests.. One of his guests needs to call him out on that. It's a great concept, but Bill needs to show his guests a little more respect then he does. He judges everyone in the country for being so righteous in their beliefs but then he does the same thing over and over again... Unfortunate because it's very entertaining and at time insightful concept. Not trying to throw Bill under the bus; it's just a blind spot he has. And I don't by at 67 he can't change.. Communication skills is practice and effective listening is the key. Also he views spiritual people as religious, two very different things, that Deepak tried to explain.

I loved this interview! Life is but a dream. So true. Deepak has such wisdom, and he’s very humble and willing to concede when he’s wrong, like when he conceded that not all politicians are necessarily just power-mongers. If Bill Maher is truly an atheist and does not believe in an afterlife, why does he fear death? I guess when you are in the process of dying and still have consciousness, you might be fearful of it, since you still have capacity to feel pain and regret. However, if you truly believe there is no afterlife, there is nothing to fear. You simply die, and you cease to exist. If there is no afterlife, you will have no fear, no regrets, no anything after death because you no longer exist or have any consciousness. Maybe he’s really agnostic and more spiritual than he’s willing to admit.

I'm getting more and more put off by Bill's intolerance for ideas that require sophisticated and nuanced thinking. Bill is as closed off and disrespectful as Tucker Carlson to guests and information he cannot understand. Tucker and Bill are two sides of the same coin. Some people have a low openness to experience, meaning they close themselves off to anything beyond their familiarity and imagination, which is already a narrow and limited space.
If this episode made you uncomfortable it's because it made you fearful. Some haven't built the self awareness to see anything honestly, Deepak was right about that. A highly self aware person trying to explain their spirituality to someone closed off and out of touch with themselves is like trying to explain colour to a blind person.
I have never believed Bill not wanting to be married despite how often he tries to make the case that he is happy as a single man. Someone who's too closed off to fall in love and start a family and now in old age is so scared of dying alone is not someone I take that seriously or want advice from, unless it's how NOT to live.
If Bill remains closed off by the limits of his own imagination he will die in fear instead of with dignity and peace, I don't want that for him, I like Bill.

I find Bill is obnoxious and irrascable in his advancing age, probably from too much cannabis use. Chopra's points at the beginning about the dreamlike quality of life become unavoidably obvious to anyone paying attention to their experience. Our brains generate a sense of psychological continuity that don't stand up to even a moment of scrutiny in still awareness. Exactly as Chopra said, where is your childhood now. When the words come out of my mouth they're already gone. We can pretend this is some far out woo woo fabrication, or you can see for yourself right now what happens - as quickly as a moment arises it passes away at any scale of observation. When you watch what's actuallly happening as it happens for 10 seconds without the backdrop of commentary or preconcieved ideas about who you are, what you think is happening or any other conceptual layering, and Chopras words become obviously true and not hard to understand.
His cultural traditions around a life well lived and a death accepted are also commendable.

As a secular humanist who thinks Deepak says a lot of made up crap, I will say there is some merit to his mental exercise about us "being phonies" and playing at playing ourselves. This is simply a mental exercise to try to have a metaphorical out of body experience and seeing ourselves outside of ourselves to gain perspective. Its like doing magic mushrooms without the shrooms. I get his point. Its healthy to see ourselves from the outside in.
