1937 Mystery Pacific Radio Part 1

  • Today, Buzz starts work on a mysterious 1937 radio made by a little known company, Pacific Radio Corp, sent to him by a viewer. The reason he accepted this radio, is because the pointer and dial on this radio are beautiful. In part 1, Buzz shows off the radio, and inspects the chassis and cabinet, which is in poor condition. The radio is missing a speaker, so Buzz finds an old Zenith speaker that might work with the radio. Watch as he re-cones the speaker, then fixes the spider and voice coil. When the wires on the audio output transformer break off, it's time to take apart the transformer and re-wind the secondary coil. Can this radio possibly work? To close out the video, Dickel introduces another "Buzz Cinema", a 1967 8mm comedy film made on Thanksgiving Day, starring his older brother Bose, and featuring the Van Hooser brother's own mom! Enjoy............

Well Buzz, you just can't get away from unrestorable radios to restore. The case will be a challenge. Great work on the speaker and OP Transformer. It looked like you didn't insulate the 'I' from the end of the "E's when you rebuilt the OP Transformer, I think there was an insulating layer when you dismantled it. Great work as usual Buzz 🍻🍻

@@Buzz1151 Haha... they are my Grandkids Buzz 🙂 It's normal with an audio transformer to load the E's from one side and the I's on the end with a small air gap between them. The manufacturer would have determined the thickness for a particular transformer.

@@DavidTipton101 Hi David....The only insulator was that cardboard piece I show @25:45 mark.......it insulated the "I"s from the frame, so that's how I put it back..

The grid wire for the 6C6 has the tube cap hiding in it! The tube has not gone to air because the metal cap is missing. I have resoldered and glued them before and it worked just fine. What a wonderful restoration to do there. It is a labor of love.

    • @Buzz1151

hi Jim.. the grid cap wire was loose at the glass and open to air.

@@Buzz1151 I Just had a 6A7 tube with same problem. the very tip of the pip got chipped when the cap came loose. Could see wire moving inside the tube. I don't have a tube tester and when I ohmed out the filament, it tested good but it didn't glow, then I found loose cap and wire. It must not have run long enough to melt heater wire because even after breaking envelope glass it still showed about 6 ohms on filament terminals.

On the output transformer I am pretty sure I saw the end of the tinned secondary wire on the right hand side 11:32. Next time get Dickel to have a look at it, sometimes those squinty little gnome eyes can see things better than us. I zoomed in on the video, I am not a gnome. It probably would't have been reliable and he rewound one in red looks nice.Good luck with the cabinet, it is really falling apart. It will be a nice looking radio with that dial.

Your work on the Pacific Radio Corp. set brings back many memories, as I restored many of these vintage sets...the wooden cabinet sets are my favorites...did much cabinet restoration and refinishing. Still have a number of these table models...but in the process of reducing the collection to the Museum of American Heritage...they collect, preserve, and display all types of technology...1850-1960. I recognize your channel...as I'm a viewer of Paper and Moose...she mentioned you and your services. Your mystery set could have been manufactured in Los Angeles...the home of many so-called orphan radio manufacturers. Here, in San Francisco, we had the Remler Corporation. They were in business from the 1920s-early 50s. I have two of their "tombstone" styled radios...quality sets.

It looks like the radio was messed with by some hack in the past who shotgunned stuff, mis-wired it, and took out the
speaker. Looking at Allied Radio it appears to be a model A9803 but can't find anything about it's schematic . Redo of the
speaker and the audio transformer was a really tough thing to do but luckily you got a successful repair! Whew. Fantastic

Wow, nice job Buzz! When I saw the "Before" condition of the radio, it looked like this one was going to be quite the challenge but, you made excellent progress.
This is definitely a basement level priced radio; I'm surprised the performance is as good as it is and it also has a shortwave band! When I first saw the schematic, I assumed it was a superhetrodyne but, then noticed there was no oscillator circuit. I'm guessing the power draw will be a bit high ~ 50 watts.

@@Buzz1151 Yes, I estimate it is dissipating 17 watts! I am a bit surprised at the tube selection, why they didn't make use of the AA5 tube set; 2 - 12SA7s, 35Z4, and 50L6, that way they only needed an 82 ohm, 5 watt resistor instead of that ballast. I can only assume their tube selection at that time was a significant cost savings.

Looks like a TRF set with 1 RF stage and a biased detector. Bias for the detector and output stages comes from voltage drop across the filter choke and a resistor in the negative side of the power supply. A super het wouldn't have cost mush more to make, RCA's patents on the circuit must have expired by then. Wonder how many TRF sets were still being made back then?
Since the speaker is MIA, will you be adding another choke, or place a resistor there? Could bet away without one, it's only being used as a bleeder anyway. OH, so you did have the speaker, it was just removed from the cabinet and wrapped separately. Problem sorta solved! You've fixed a few speakers before, and some of them even worked afterwards. Lost art, reconing.

I think you screwed the pooch on re-assembling that output transformer. Filter chokes have ALL the Es and Is go in the same direction. Power transformers have every other E and I in opposite directions, but AF transformers usually have them in groups, a bunch of 2-10 in the same direction followed by another bunch in the opposite direction, rinse, spin, repeat. Why? Well it has to do with core saturation vs frequency response. Chokes have one huge air gap because they run on pure DC and you don't want the core to saturate. Power transformers run on pure AC, so they have the smallest air gaps (lots of them!) and core saturation isn't an issue., while AF transformers run on both AC and pure DC, so they need medium air gaps as a compromise between frequency response and DC saturation. The way you did it might work, but you'll have limited freq response.
