    Learn about traditional Inuit culture from this fascinating series. This series documents cultural practices, skills, and values in Nunavut in northern Canada. Each episode focuses on a different topic, and does a good job of celebrating the skills and resourcefulness of the Inuit.
    The territory of the Inuit (also called Eskimo, Inupiaq, Yupik, and other regional names) cover the northern and western regions of Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland. The Inuit continue to live in these areas and maintain many cultural traditions while also incorporating some modern technology into their culture as well. Inuit continue to have a deep respect and spiritual connection with the land and its resources.
    The Tuktu documentary series was produced by the National Film Board of Canada between 1966 and 1968.

    I love this series also. I am old now and have never been to Canada. But as a young man I did see Greenland. The finest people I've ever known. We called them Esquimaux. Poetry, laughter, ghost stories, trinkets, hardships. Wonderful people.

    I am watching TUKTU documentaries after 43 years .. I first saw them at my all boys boarding school at St. Joseph's College, School Department, North Point, Darjeeling. It is an institution established in 1888 by Jesuits from the Vancouver Mission. These documentaries were shown to us if the Sunday Movie did not reach us in the upper Himalayan mountains owing to some reason ... I have tears of joy running down my cheeks! Rev Gerard Van Wallegeham SJ was our Rector during my time there .. HURRAH FOR OUR HOME IN THE MOUNTAINS!

    I like watching these just before I got o bed (made when I was a small girl). There is a respect the gentleness about how the programme makers made the series and admiration for the innuit or what we called when I was born in the UK the eskimo people; so at one with nature and probably how a lot of our ancestors lives as ice ages came and went across the UK too.

      The word Eskimo don't bother me and my family and most friends one bit. It defines as raw meat eater and that we are. We were named that by another native tribe.

    Only in Alaska is the title acceptable? It seems the artic natives there don't seem to mind referring to themselves, or being referred to as Eskimos? But the name is not very, 'popular' in Canada, Greenland or Siberia. I watched a live example of that around 3yrs ago in the grocery store I worked in.
    It was the holiday season. At the self checkout was a woman whom I thought was Asian. The well known Nat King Cole Christmas carol was playing on the loudspeakers. And when the part of the song where he sings, "...and folks dressed up like Eskimos." is heard, the woman looked up at the speakers with a very angry face. When that happened, I wondered why she looked so angry, but I think that I've learned why. I guess she was an Inuit woman who now lives in, or at least is visiting, the Mid-Atlantic US.

    Alaska Exreme Do the people who study the various Eskimo Cultures have a theory why the Natives of Northern Asia, the Reindeer people, who live on the Tundra and domesticate Reindeer or Caribou to meet most of their needs evolved differently then the Alaskan and Canadian Eskimos who did not domesticate the Caribou and depend on dog sleds to get around and seal,walrus and fish for food.?

    • @AlaskaExtreme
      @AlaskaExtreme  5 років тому +1

      Well, cultures are based on environment and resources. so the eskimo (inuit) of North America are mostly coastal, so they eat a lot of seafood. That said there is some reindeer herding in Alaska on the west coast. One of the first places reindeer herding was introduced was a native village named Teller about a hundred years ago. Reindeer herders from Norway actually came to Alaska with some of their reindeer to teach the Eskimos how to herd them. The village still has a herd, and there a few other villages with herd as well. As far as why they didn't domesticate on their own, I haven't heard a theory.
