Great video, I’m curious to know how to measure the window so I can pickup the correct size? I currently have Pella double pane windows that have haze on the inside pane.
You make it look easy. I have 12 window in my house that is single pane I think it's over 40 years old. The house is very closed to busy street and traffic noise are killing me. I think I am going to upgrade it to double pane insulated window to keep the house little quiet. I don't how difficult this would be.

I had an Andersen Rep come by but I never got a straight answer about what I was going to have to do when the replacement windows are installed. Looks to me that you will need to do some trim painting on the interior and likely going to have to do all of the trim so that it properly matches.
I need help with replacing windows surrounded by Asbestos panels. In particular, a window has a wall-unit AC, and it is slowly, over time pulling the rotting ceal further outside causing the stoop to rot. Any tips?
You are lucky....your window fitted the opening. Your brick moulding and sill aren't rotten either like mine. I had to order special size windows and nail them into the original 2x4 wall framing
I can understand why the outside bottom of window may require some attention due to the sill angle not matching the replacement window; but, having difficulty visualizing what you were filling on the sides of the window since it was installed against the outside stops. Thanks.
Why is there a gap when this thing fits inside and against the stop and how or why would you put sealant in the stop if the gap needed backer rod? Looks like an incorrectly sized window.
Very informative video, with only a minor correction which I'm sure was just a simplification. Obviously 'warm air' does not pass through single pane glass. What happens here is 2 fold. First off, the single pane of glass easily transfers the heat on one side of the glass to the other. It also does nothing to block infrared light from passing through. The double layer of glass prevents direct heat transfer from the outside air to the inside air, and also reflects infrared light, keeping heat energy inside in the winter and outside in the summer. Over all, great video!
Most people don't realize there are little gnomes that come by at night and drill tiny holes in the glass, thereby releasing the argon gas and nullifying the insulative affect.. so next time you feel a draft.. you can curse those little gnomes for that..
You can measure yourself. It's not hard, but if you're buying them from Pella, then there's no need to do so. Have Pella come to your house and measure. Installation is a separate cost. Just buy the windows and then install them yourself. That's how I did it.
The plastic "rope" around the corner of replacement window, should not be cut until caulking and shims are done. With storm windows in the 1980's, removing this rope too early, will cause alignment problems. This rope is what holds the strom window aligned. Am I right Ron? The manufacturer warns installer, to remove when almost done. Be careful you are measuring jam to jam, sash strip can cause problems measuring.
Hello great video. However i do have one question. What is the depth of the double hung window? 3" or 3 1/2". Are most depths 3" on newer replacement windows? Therefore you will have a 1/2'' gap between the step sill and the double hung window... How do you fix this gap between the step sill and the window? Replace the sill?
Most replacement windows come with a half inch plastic strip that slides on the bottom of the window before you install. That way it covers that gap and then just caulk around the window.

I thought you were gonna say the most annoying piece of mail was the one from Anderson windows renewal by Andersen asking you if you want to get your windows changed
We have old windows. Last week, I did a big dooty in our downstairs bathroom. Clogged the toilet and all. I’ll be watching your video on how to unclog a toilet since it’s been sitting for a week. Anyways, I didn’t even open the window and my wife said I stunk up the outside backyard. I think the windows need replacing since there is a draft outside.
All my windows guys say that PVC and Vinyl windows are superior to Wood. I really dislike the way Vinyl and some PVC look. Plus when things go wrong they cost a fortune to replace. Wood is at every builder supply and so easy and inexpensive to replace. Here in GA I we do not have energy concerns as much as up North where you deal with extreme temp changes. I often wonder if expensive windows really pay off? I did the math once and it would have taken me 30 years to break even with PVC windows. So I just replaced my broken sealed windows with same wood (cost me 200 bucks over 800) plus I have so many clients who spend thousands of dollars in new windows only to learn a few years later when a seal breaks that it isn't covered under the warranty! Just had a client learn that with Anderson Windows.. they charged him $$$. I was so angry for him. He paid the 1200 to have the windows replaced. So anyone looking at replacing those windows better have a good look at the warranty and do the math with supposed energy savings and cost factor.
You’re right, replacement windows never pay off. You’ll never make the money back on your power bill, even if you install them yourself. Plus, they don’t last nearly as long as non-vinyl. Better to rebuild old ones. The most expensive replacement window, double-paned and vacuum sealed with noble gases between the panes, is about an R6. The wall next to it is an R10, even if there’s no insulation. If you’re replacing windows because you’re environmentally conscious, there is an embedded energy cost in the manufacture, shipping and installation of the windows themselves that you will never offset with the energy you save. Window marketing has been amazingly successful. Vinyl replacements should be an absolute last resort.
Since I replied to this comment I have had a buyer looking in the 2 Million and above market here in Atlanta. Well, I have made note of the style of windows. All of them had run of the mill Wood windows that you buy/order at the builder supply. Only one had custom Iron windows (and I actually think they were painted Aluminum) and that was only at the front of the house and they matched and the rest were painted Black (wood). We are talking 2.3 Million dollar new construction home. So, I think for sure I will stick with my simple Wood double hung windows. Everytime a client tells me they spend 20 K replacing windows I think, "I hope you enjoyed them because a buyer is only going to care that you have windows and they are not going to pay 20 K more for your home because you have them"... Just a hard convo to have with Sellers sometimes...
So I’m sure the price of windows has gone up since this was posted but wood is definitely not cheaper than vinyl, at least in my area. They are hundreds more than the low E double hung vinyl. I paid, with tax, slightly over $200. I would have loved wood double hung but can’y afford that. Good thing my house is well insulated
I have US property, accessible from the Canadian side. I have to cross the boarder, then take a boat to our property. Nice windows, but if they can’t installed them, they won’t sell them. Crazy. I guess I will skip the install fee for a contractor as I built the house. Yes, it has reclaimed single pane windows in it now, but it gets cold. I guess bears and company policy make it scary to accomplish!
Why doesn't anyone show how to install a replacement arched window? I have an arched (half circle) window in a stucco wall I need to replace and I'd love to see a video but can't find anything on it.
Where is the foam backer and non-expanding foam, window wrap tape? Caulk does a poor job of filling in the cracks, don't bet solely on caulk. Old school install.
I think there’s a reason the energy efficiency information on the sticker was blacked out. Those windows are the low grade standard Pella window. Not efficient at all. They don’t even have an energy star certification...
Aluminum clad Pella... 90 million $$$ lawsuit settled finally last yr, 10,000 people on the suit for this windows constant wood rot. Aluminum expands at different rates than wood thus allowing moisture in between the aluminum and wood.

@@bernardbarn, I saw a few videos of people replacing their windows from the outside. The new windows had the nailing flange. Of course, I saw videos of people replacing their windows from the inside also. Is there q difference between the two as far as efficiency and quality?
Pella is literally the worst...expensive and way over engineered. Replacement parts are over priced as they use their own proprietary hardware. Nothing special about them tipping out to clean.....even cheap windows from the 80's will do this.
A single pane of glass has the same R value no matter what its mounted in, so these plastic windows are Not more energy efficient than wood, Also, wood windows last for centuries when maintained & plastic windows last about 10-15 years then they are landfill material!
True, but these are more energy efficient because they have less space between them and it is filled with gas. A lot of times, the storm windows are not fully sealed so air exchanges easier and the gap between the windows is much larger and less ideal.
Ron...Ron...Ron. Replacing your windows will not decrease dramatically your electric bills. Energy leakage from other areas must also be addressed such as bad air seals on doors, attics, and electric outlets. How much did those Pellas cost/window? How many years is the warranty? You made it look so easy and fast, but how long before the seal for the argon gas fails, moisture gets inside, rots the wood, and you have to replace them again...and again...and again. They sound like disposable, non-sustainable windows to me. Instead of trashing the old wood windows, you could have taken the time investment to strip the failing paint we saw, repaint and reglaze the existing wood windows to fix the air leaks. Installing good weatherization products could further improve the air seal. Then invest in some high quality storm windows like Monray which don't detract from the design of the original windows. Is ease and time saving of cleaning really your second criteria for your windows?
I had that type of window installed in my house a few years ago, and it was the difference in being warm and freezing, the old windows would actually have ice build up on the inside, and always had a cold draft, no matter how warm the room was.
My house is almost 100 years old. I think the windows are original. I'm only slightly joking. Half were replaced at some point. The rest are SO bad that cardboard would probably give us better energy savings. The glass is SO thin. My daughter was making a TikTok video and trying to stand on her head on her bed...walking her feet up the wall, and then the window. Foot went through, blood everywhere, and a gash that missed her Achilles by a couple of mm. I'm watching a lot of window replacement videos and thinking I'd even take the ones they're pulling out! LOL

@@bernardbarn, I saw a few videos of people replacing their windows from the outside. The new windows had the nailing flange. Of course, I saw videos of people replacing their windows from the inside also. Is there q difference between the two as far as efficiency and quality?
That is not how you apply the flashing
LOL
