Something that I would have loved to see modeled is an iris in the back. Not only does it make it more realistic when looking down the barrel, but it can also add a moving piece to the internals and make it look more alive. When I find time, I may try to set up a procedural geo-nodes iris that opens and closes realistically!
Small tip, you can do the lens non-destructively by adding the following modifiers after the screw (top to bottom): edge split, subd. surface, weld. Gives you the same result without having to select any edges. Same goes for the lens casing, minus the screw modifier ofc.
They say you learn the most valuable information when you least expect it. That noisy texture you made is something I've been trying to figure out for a while. I'm doing character figures, you know those popular Japanese figures people collect. Looking at the photos, you can see texture in the paint so I've been trying to replicate ever since. Thank you, Derek-sensei.
I'm off the modeling train right now, but I modeled a couple of lenses over a year ago, the first models I was happy with, but I had no idea about how to get that lens effect; so they lacked a bit of realism. This is exactly the tutorial I need. Fantastic.
Derek, I don't know what to say its awesome tutorial. You are the king of blender tutorials, thank you. I almost watched every tutorial you have made which helped me a lot. King Derek.👑
To use Follow Active Quad, make sure one quad is actually square or rectangle in the UV editor. Then run the operator again. Then the UV unwrap will be correct
PERFECT!!! This is exactly what I needed!! A really professional approach to lens creation in Blender!! I am modeling a historically accurate replica of the Mercury Freedom 7 spacecraft cockpit flight controls, and it has a small camera that was used to capture video of Astronaut Alan Shepherd for his historical first flight into space. It was a fish eye lens so this will work perfectly for me. But I see if you really needed it to, you could research the model number of the camera that your trying to replicate or a similar camera and then use it to replicate the lens setup for a really accurate reproduction. Thank you for doing this!! Can always count on the Blender community to come through! :-D :-D
Oh snap.... I'm a photographer and am super excited that you of all people made a video on this. So excited. Gonna set aside time to watch it on the weekend.
Wow the video I've been looking for, for about 2 months now has finally popped out. Thanks Derek, I appreciate your effort and it's so funny how I stumbled on a channel that bears the same name as I do. (Just Derek)
I wonder if the coating could look more realistic with a node setup that uses the light path node and the bounce count to change the material used for reflections based on the number of bounces. I think it could work and look a little bit better than a single material for each lens.
Hey Derek, awesome tutorial, I have learned loads, thankyou!! Does anyone know how to make the logo text white? Cant seem to find that bit anywhere :-) Thanks again
Would this work for eevee? If so do you know what options I’d need to change for shading? I usually work in cycles but I’m currently doing a project in eevee
Which we had a proper thin film material. I remember this material from my old render engine Thea Render. Its such a nice effect. Ive seen very good version in Blender. But not as realistic as that one.
Lol! This is probably the dirtiest UV management I've ever seen :) My OCD has seizures :D :D :D On the other hand, it's great time saver. Lesson learned.
18:30 Not totally sure what those things are, but I'm guessing it has to do with blocking reflections from that internal hood area. The light that would normally be reflected around that chamber instead bounces off the angled steps and away from the lens. Don't take this as a fact though, as it's just my personal theory!!!
i have a problem.. the front lens looks like a plane convex mirror . cant see through the lens (no depth ) i followed all your steps.. im using blender 3.3
earlier In this video you said you work on freelance projects. what I would like to know is were do you find people who will give you the work? please help
@@DerekElliott there are so many tools hidden away in Blender. I'm just surprised most people don't know about the line tool. Hopefully Blender will turn it on by default in future versions.
Not sure why people use render preview while rendering. In this cause, i noticed system was lagging. Probably also because he was doing live screen capture. If you do want use Render View, use low number. Saw his setting was 1024, makes it render super long and on every update i restarts
I can't believe Blender doesn't have a way to make splines with bezier curves, that whole making a plane then deleting all but one vertex and extruding it to make a curve is ridiculous to me. It's been a year since this video, does Blender have it now in version 4? I mean at this point there is no excuse for them not to have it.

yes! I would like to revisit this some time with more motion in general

Thank you very happy to hear!
Awesome! Currently working on a project where I'm recreating some vintage lenses I own so this will come in handy 👍
How convenient!
I love when I get to load up my pretty basic default blender scene!
Another fantastic tutorial Derrk!
:)
Perfect timing Sir. I waited. Good job Sir
i dont even do this but i still watch your videos. always fun to watch
I can see more camera lenses are coming to the Instagram post ❤ Always enjoy your pretty darn good video Derek 🤓

I was looking for a normal crack for a long time and stumbled upon you, thank you very much
lol I love how you only saved it at the very end. Also your time-lapse song was a hit. 10/10.
Yes! Glad you liked the song haha
Wow! It works! The first time i tried it took forever to activate and when I disabled my antivirus it worked like in less than a minute! Thanks bro!
Everything tutorial you do, is a must watch for me, I learned a lot thank you Derek 👌👌
It really worked for me after I look and try some tutorials, yours is the one that worked. Owe you a lot.
BROTHER, YOU ARE THE BEST!!! You oooh really helped me!! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
yo bro, really thankya. Big respect
I was planing to make a DSLR model ... And u came up with this ... Couldn't be more perfect 🔥🔥

it's a great name. Thanks for being here, Derek.
@@DerekElliott I'll likely combine the knowledge of your phone animation and this to render out my iphone 14 pro max
That name means gifted leader
That’s ULTRACOOL Derek, another awesome tutorial form you, thanks
Thank you so much Sensei! You are a blessing!

OMG, it really worked. Thank you so much!!
Maybe you could consider some sound dampening and a mic that pics up less reverb? Basically aim for that thick podcast sound :D
agreed ahahaha Derk voice is too bass

Thanks for the vid Derek!
no prob!
Thanks bro that was really helpful
Thank you.
I like the music mate😁
thanks so much man
it looks good
I am very glad that you save my money
Awesome tutorial like always man!
Thankya :)
Legend.
Bro you are beast
Very helpful
It‘s amazing.
Cool as usual Mr Derek
Beautiful work 👍🏾🔥

How did you make very smooth rotate and move within Cycles-x?
I notice Sample 4096 on Render??? how did you do that?
Me is limit Sample 5 on Render.
Cool... thank you!
Its Freakn Derek Friday ;) Nice one again!!!

I remember that phone tut. I made a super nice version. Really got me in using Eevee. Though i still prefer Cycles.
amazing

Hi Derek! I have question for you, how can i learn Blender? From internet or books and teacher?
I'm waiting DSLR Camer ❤️❤️🖐️
40 mins is like 5 mins when watching derek
thanks for share
Lovely jubbly :)
This is cool
I faked the rainbow effect on a lens by somehow using a noise node. It worked for the most part. But this is fantastic.

They're called "baffles". Very common internally in camera lenses, binoculars and many telescopes.
hi i want to make reflect an eye in the lens but i don't know how i can do that ? someone can help me please, thanks ! sorry for my english
Hey what engine do you use to render out the final animation?
very well done
i have a problem.. the front lens looks like a plane convex mirror . cant see through the lens (no depth ) i followed all your steps.. im using blender 3.3
Same, it looks great until I render then the iside convex lens is jsut white

Could you post that image in the description, you mentioned it in the video or this for Patreon only?
Yes I have added it to Patreon. Anyone can get the reference image but the file itself is only for patrons
@@DerekElliott Cool, i understand Went to that page and got all the references. Will try to model it to full detail as shown on that Zeis 21mm page
Why don’t you use the free Mesh: Snap_Utilities_Line add-on built into Blender? Isn’t that a better line tool?
I will have to try it! Didn't know about it

brother i really like your tutorial ... can you make another shoe model and texturing tutorial .....😊😊😊😊
Upgrade to 3.3 LTS and get Shade Auto Smooth right-click option!

Glass is sucked, in Cycles. Use Octane for Glass in Blender
first
You win
It's not even close to realistic.
sir you talk to much in the video
