  • If you're thinking about getting into vinyl records, this short video is ESSENTIAL to watch first. People are going to steer you away from certain turntables, and they may not explain why, which can be really frustrating. I wanted to, in a simple manner, explain WHY people tell you not to get a Crosley or All-In-One record player so that you can dive into the hobby on the right foot. If you're a knowledgeable record fanatic, hopefully this video will be something you can share with new friends that want to join the wonderful world of vinyl.

Just so it's said here: Contrary to what is usually claimed, lp60's track at a proper 3.5 grams with a spring setting it and does in fact have anti-skating as demonstrated by the youtuber VWestlife.

    • @hypnagogue
      @hypnagogue 3 роки тому +4

this. people who weigh it themselves typically do it incorrectly, placing a scale on top of the platter won’t give an accurate measurement because the spring is being stretched less. u have to put the surface of the scale at the same height as the platter, and when i did that it measured 3.5g. also it does have anti-skate, i tested it myself on a blank record. u can’t adjust it because the tracking force is always the same, therefore the anti-skate needs to be too. the lp60x is a perfect starter turntable, it’s dummy-proof and has decent enough sound especially for the affordable price.
edit: also, make sure to get the lp60x not the normal lp60, they fixed the skipping issues as well as issues with the buttons. lp60x has no issues

I've had an LP60BT for a lil over 3 years now. I've never had it skate across an album once yet. And it wasn't exactly "cheap" either, as I remember paying 300 CAD after taxes for it. That was a fair bit of bone for me at the time as I don't make an exorbitant amount of money. As for it wrecking my records?!??? I haven't noticed any type of degradation yet. I'm buying mainly new out of the shrink wrap records and all I know is that for the most part they all sound as good as when I first played them. I try to take care of placing on and off the table and taking out and putting back in the sleeves. I wipe them after use with a proper brush, in general I try to take care of the records. I also have a needle cleaning brush that I use every now and then. So I'm pretty sure an LP60 series if just fine to start a collection and get a more "serious" table later on when your collection has grown and your getting into records that maybe need to be babied a bit.

  • @nievesofficial

Definitely some good tips, however the LP60 is still a great entry table in my eyes, I’ve had mine for several years and have had minimal issues, also I never spent up to $300 on my setup, for someone who isn’t a complete audiophile who needs the 100% best sound possible I’d say a thrift store can meet your expectations in terms of speakers and a receiver at least

I just got into collecting records and I bought a Crosley Discovery Record Player. I honestly don’t understand why people hate them. I love the way it looks and I haven’t had issues with any new records I’ve purchased skipping. The old used records I’ve found at the thrift of course are going to pop and skip from time to time but I honestly enjoy that aspect of it. It sits on my nightstand and the sound fills my room beautifully. Yes, the speakers don’t produce the clearest sound but if your into that old school record player sound it does just fine. You can even connect external speakers to it if you want. I got it for the experience of purchasing a beautifully illustrated record, opening it up, cleaning it, and placing it down on the turntable. Just that alone is worth the low price I paid for it. For a casual beginner I think it’s perfect and I highly recommend it. Of course you can pay hundreds of dollars for an audiophiles dream setup but I haven’t been persuaded yet to invest in it given how dated this tech really is. Just enjoy the music people it ain’t that serious.

I appreciate your comment Alexander but that's like getting mad at people saying that NYC pizza is the best when you can just eat lunchables and it's still technically pizza. If you enjoy your setup, that's all that matters -- but ultimately, if music is important to you, a Crosley just won't output the sound that allows for truly falling in love with this hobby. As for the skipping, sadly, based on empirical data, it's not a matter of if, but "when" -- if you start to run into issues and you want help picking out an upgrade that doesn't break the bank, I'm here for you!

      Lol same!
Like he said I'm the beginning it depends on your reasoning for getting into vinyl.
I'm not an audiofile and have no desire to be. For the majority of music I prefer streaming. Cheap, Portable, great sound, and doesn't take up too much space. Vinyl is more experience based for me and I prefer the scratched popping noise for ASMR reasons. ( Ideally I want to find a record that only contains those noises no music just blissful crackling heaven. 😇)Hence the cheapy.

When I decided to start my vinyl record collection & DJ’ing, I started off with buying a pair of Technics SL1210-Mk2 and a job-lot box of 100 Techno records. I sorted that box out, sold what I didn’t want, made a little profit and bought another job-lot box of 100 records. Done the same thing over and over for years, it became a passionately satisfying hobby dealing with vinyl records. It’s always exciting to buy job-lot records as there’s often some good surprises. After years of buying and trading records, I had thousands in my possession, so I sold what I didn’t want and kept all my favourites. Now I have a nice collection of around a thousand vinyl records. I use Discogs quite often to buy specific records. I never thought I would develop such a strong passion for vinyl records, there’s something so special about holding a record, putting it on a turntable and manipulating it. There’s a unique warm noise to the sound of vinyl playing that can’t be explained to those who don’t quite understand the true definition of vinyl record sound. I DJ with vinyl and I’ve tried CD and digital but it’s just not the same. Using vinyl to DJ and to generally listen to music is a very special experience, one has to really practice it to understand.
With regards to the record player, I have only used the Technics SL1210-Mk2, so I have no experience with anything else but I must say that this player is extremely good. It’s such a robust piece of kit. If it’s set up correctly, maintained & looked after... it’ll last for decades. I regularly clean mine, ensure the settings are correct and service it periodically. These record players are getting on in their age now, but their prices just go up and up every year, they have such good reputation, I would highly recommend the 1210 Mk2 to anyone.
So.... Getting into vinyl was an excellent choice I made all those years back, Something I’ll never regret. I doubt I’ll ever part from my record collection. I’ve so much love for it.

I appreciate this non-judgemental perspective! My entire beginner set up cost about $300 even with "elevated" choices thanks to Black Friday! I'm starting with the AT LP3 (a step up from the 60 since it has adjustable counterweight and antiskate) and edifiers 1280dbs. The next step is actually to get the speakers on stands, right now they're both in a small cubby right next to each other which defeats the stereo sound... something I got FLAMED for on reddit 😂 but it's what my space allows at the moment and sounds fine to my beginner ears. This hobby can definitely be snooty but right now it's bringing me joy to INTENTIONALLY listen to music again. I used to sit in my room and listen to music as an activity, not just background noise, and this brings me back to that which was my reasoning to start.

Hi Matt. It might be worth mentioning to beginners that some old home theater receivers have a phono (turntable) input and often can be found for very little money. $20-$30 on craigs or thrift stores. Than all you need is a turntable and speakers. I think lots of parents or relatives have these sitting in there garage or attic when they get new systems, and some may be able to get them for free if they ask nicely;) I have been enjoying your videos. Take care. Charles

Everyone needs to start somewhere. I know I did. I started out with a Sony record player from Best Buy hooked up to a Magnavox AV receiver. I had no idea what I was doing. This was about 20 years ago when I got the “bug” and really wanted to get into vinyl. It took a lot of trial and error since I was doing it blindly and without any guidance. There wasn’t as much info online as there is now. If only I knew now what I knew back then, I’d have saved a lot of time and money. Fast forward to now and a lot of money later, I decided to stick with this hobby and for the past few years have been happy with it. I currently own a Technics SL 1100a w/Nagaoka MP 150/MP 200 stylus combo going into a Puffin DSP phono stage. I’m using a Reisong tube amp which got killer reviews and the reviews were right! It’s an inexpensive, but awesome sounding amp. Vinyl actually sounds pretty damn great when played with the right gear. Lesson learned.

Love this video, have been collecting for years, my one argument though is that if you're just getting started collecting and you're still on the fence about getting serious or if you're brand new to the hobby, an LP60 is a perfect turntable for the first year (maybe 2) of your collection, I actually used mine for nearly 2 years and it worked great (besides the skipping on some records cause of the shit tone arm)

I grew up in the 70s and 80s so my recent interest in vinyl collecting is just as much about nostalgia as it is the music. I have one of those all-in-one players that I got for a Christmas gift several years ago. When I started buying records again, I replaced the needle with a diamond one and I could immediately hear the difference (which is impressive since I suffer from tinnitus). I do understand why people who really want their collection to be pristine and get the most audio quality should really steer clear of the Crosleys and all-in-one units and it is my hope that I'll eventually be able to get a more sophisticated system. Until then, I am still going to happily spin records on the player I have. Love your channel, BTW. Very educational to us newbies.

If you have not, it is worth it... Save up though and yes get a fairly good system with speakers. (Not loud per se" but good).. Secondly, the good vinyl is the original pressings and not really the newest stuff at the store because cd's are good now and a lot cheaper.. Therefore find a good local record store and get the original Pre-2000 albums. Any CD that is bought after 2010 is probably on par with any vinyl (not remasters).

My husband and I have just got an Audio Technica LP120 as our first turntable. We have been wanting to get into Vinyl for a awhile. My father-in-law said he would buy us a turntable for our 1st anniversary and then the speakers for christmas. We are lucky to already have some fairly decent speakers.
Now in this video he keeps telling you to ask "why you want do you to get into vinyl". For us it was inevitable. We both grew up with our dads loving records and carfully looking after them. My husband got more and more into music as he got older, and ended up being a muli-instrumentalist with his own music recording studio set up (It's also a general music room). As for me, I got more and more into the arts and have a theareticle understanding of classical music. I learnt how to play a few woodwind instruments and got closer to my dad through the love of music. My husband and I met at an arts college, he was on a music course 'n I was on a perforing arts course. So for us it was a logical step into yet another music art form.

First off, he's beyond right on many levels. However, getting more indepth into this, you will find the differences and shall I say preferences of your listening experience. Absolutely invest in a good turntable and even better speakers. Then listen to many records on that turntable, dial it in. Then buy a cartridge that suits your setup and listening needs. Then you can go hog wild on tube amps, pre amps etc... However I would advise against going low range in this hobby, even at the beginning. I would suggest going mid range so you get longevity out of your setup. This is an expensive hobby. I own records now that cost a couple of hundred dollars, and thats nothing, some own things that cost thousands. Eventually, you will be where I'm at in about a year, and that's looking to upgrade. I dont have an uber expensive setup by any means. I bought a Fluance RT81, added a high quality cork mat, and a Nagaoka MP110. I have decent Polk Audio TSi speakers, and a tube matched preamp, thats good quality but on the cheaper end. I have a decent Polk Audio sub, and a decent deck which has very low thd. However, now that I have an ear for what I want. Im looking at much more expensive equipment. I wont purchase them until I can justify it. Right now work and family life is keeping me from listening more often. Just my piece of advice.

The rumors about the LP60 making records skip and wear out fast is baseless hearsay from kids on r/vinyl who were too young to ever grow up with records, most of them having got into vinyl a year or two before the newbies watching this video. The cartridge on it is an identical re-badge of the Rega Carbon, which is standard fitted on Rega's Planar range of turntables that go for as much as $675 retail. If you're gullible enough to think the LP60 isn't fitted with a serviceable cartridge, you're also gullible enough to think that Bentley SUVs aren't rebadged Audi Q7s. 3 grams of tracking force is pretty common for many mid- and high-end cartridges and I can name dozens of modern high-end cartridges by well respected companies that track that high or higher.
I wouldn't be surprised if an entry level turntable like the AT-LP60 is more likely to have a bit more manufacturing issues than a more high end turntable for obvious reasons, but scaring new vinyl enthusiasts with rumors you found on a forum doesn't actually inform them. Please post data for the claims you make if you want to be informative, instead of repackaging old wives' tales in video format that they'll come across online anyway, which seems to be a common theme on this channel.

Lmao, what, do you work for Audio Technica? Myself and many other people have owned LP60s and brand new records were skipping for no reason. Getting a new turntable fixed that. Why? Not because of the cartridge. It's because of the lack of a counterweight and anti-skate. Some of them may be dialed in more properly than others, if someone has one with no issues, amazing. There are plenty of documented issues with this, and I've PERSONALLY experienced it, so I'd appreciate if you didn't come on my channel and try to denounce my actual experiences with your nonsense.

No one is denying that those built in speakers on a suitcase turn table are going to sound pretty ordinary and not that great. But I believe that generally, the built in speakers are only going to be used temporarily when the turn table is first purchased. Just so that records can be played straight away before buying any additional equipment. I don't think it will be too long before most people buy a pair of external speakers etc.

I once owned an MCS(Panasonic) all in one back in 1980 that had an awesome amplifier and pretty decent wooden 3 way speaker cabinets. I used to make cassette copies of my lps to make them last longer. I've heard about a new system from Teac ( the lpr-660) that might be one of the few exceptions; yes, its counterweight is pre set, but at the proper tracking force allowed for stereo vinyl lps ; ( see VWestlife's review) it also has a cd recorder so you can preserve your vinyl by making cd-r copies, and it also allows you to upgrade to a better sounding stylus like the Lp Gear Blue Cerapreme, for example. I agree with you that the Crosleys, Pyles and Boytones are bad quality; I'm just saying there are a few ( very few) exceptions.

First of all, listening to vinyl was a way of life for some people. That was the only media; except for maybe cassette tapes, or perhaps 8 track tapes that was used. You don’t need fancy equipment to get started. Next, I never purchase record sleeves unless the one that came with it was worn out, then perhaps I would changed it. Listening to vinyl should not set you back a lot of money, go to yard sales, thrift stores, or perhaps ask your older family members if they have used equipment or vinyl records (you might like) ,that they are not using. Or perhaps ,they can turn you to someone that has those thing, once you get into listening to vinyl, then make the decision later on to upgrade. And take your time when you do, vinyl is here to stay. Enjoy listening to vinyl for the best experience ever.

But what if I am a broke teenager who wants records and/or loves the vinyl record culture. I wish I was a teenager right now so I could buy my Crosley and getting my cool $1-$7 records and loving it and poop on all the elder generation dudes who are stuck on their current belief that "it sounds better" . Yeah , it could sound better but ( *im a broke teenager ) what the hell does it matter when in my ears the crosleys with my cheap ass records sound just fine?. I am in my mid thirties and one of the things I remember as a little kid is that records my parents played sounded great and it (the whole ritual) looked great. I have a pretty good set up now because I can afford it but, hey kids : do not trip about not having $100+ record players nor buying box sets nor buying brand new nor exclusive vinyl. I wish I could buy the records I listened to back then ... (30 years ago) not because they were expensive nor exclusive but because there is a sentimental value. and they looked like crap (all beat up) and most likely sounded like crap but to my ears (as in my whole family) it was music. and guess what... I could fine most of them for $7-$10. and they look beat up as in back in the days and sound great. To my fellow older people, stop looking and sounding silly judging on what kids buy nowadays. If it wasn't for the kids right now, the vinyl revival wouldn't have happened. cheers guys and keep enjoying music ! PEACE :)

This was the same story I experienced like you did, but it’s different. During the summer of 2015 I started my record collection. The lp60 was my first turntable. It was good until I heard noticeable skips on a few records and it spun a bit too fast. I took off for a year until going back in the winter of 2017. And then in March of 2017, I upgraded to an atlp120. When I spun some records that skipped from the older model, but thanks to the counterweight and the anti skate, it didn’t skip, but for some records the skip rate is rare. Of course starting a record collection takes spending massive amounts of money and research to get the best setup possible.

  • @leon9021
    @leon9021 6 років тому +1

Only thing I dont agree on is the wear on records. You will never hear wear if you have a good setup. Why? Because you continue to get used to the very slow degredation. But even if you did compare first spin to another it would have to be a few hundred spins until you could hear a difference, given a 300$ table.
And even on Crosleys it will take a while. Some hyperbolize 5 plays, Id say 50, and thats again if you compare first to last. Theres been tests of this even on youtube.
But if all you can hear is through the Crosley speakers then you will never hear a difference. Because they are bad of course.

It’s things like this that make me hope I’m never called an audiophile. As long as you maintain your records and replace your needles on time there is nothing wrong with all in ones of Crosley record players. This is just personal bias. Are they the most amazing players well no but they also won’t damage your records nearly as fast as the audio snobs like to say. My first record player was an 80s mini system and while it might have scratched records that was on me for not realizing at a young age that needles needed to be replaced, my next record player was an Awia that was an add on to a mini system once that dies I bought the Emerson Heritage edition all in one and have been very pleased with it but recently I decided since I only listen to records I might as well get a decent quality player so I am now in the middle of piecing together a system I want which while yes I want decent performance Equally important to me is that the system looks the way I want. But i didn't really know my grandpa so i am hoping by listening to his music to get to know him better. Sadly his record player was broken and als giant (like its as big as my dorm room fridge). All i am sure of is that i need to put everything in new slaves.

Hey! So, to properly listen to a record and to start to understand why people like vinyl (why vinyl is worth listening to, even) you'll need to invest in a decent starter setup. I would buy an Audio Technica LP120 or a Fluance RT81, and then attach them to a pair of powered speakers (speakers that have their own volume knob basically) and that would be a decent start to listen to and enjoy his records. Shouldn't take up that much room, that is, until you get hooked and expand your collection ;)

  • @achn2b

And the thing is, if you really get into it, it never stops. Sure, you get a decent turntable, maybe a thrift store vintage stereo amp and some decent bookshelves. Sounds pretty good. Now maybe try a more expensive cartridge, a stand-alone phono preamp, better speakers. Sounds even better. Now maybe move to separates, or use your stereo amp as a preamp for a newer more powerful amplifier. Move from a budget phono stage to one that costs what your amp did. Or even more. The sound continues to get better.
And we won't even get into the matter of wiring and cables.

LP60 is the bare minimum I'd recommend for a beginner. It's perfect for starters. However, if someone already knows they want to start investing (maybe they listen to a friend's setup regularly and want to have their own), I'd say start with U-turn or Fluance. I don't mention the LP120 due to the fact you can't truly bypass the built in phono stage without some surgery.

First thing I'd get is a linear turntable . The record is made that way on a linear machine that cuts the original groove . Tracking is far superior to any standard turntable . Offers great fidelity thru the entire record being played .

Dave Davis linear table? You mean a fixed arm?

Leon thepro yes , whatever you choose to call it . Standard turntables only give optimal audio at certain points of the record . Due to their swing motion .

Dave Davis Yes Im well aware of the geometry problem of vinyl playback. But you said that the cutting lathes are linear too which they are not. Furthermore, there are no non linear tables on the market under like 10000$ that Im aware of, so of course you would fetch a linear table.

Leon thepro every cutting machine I've seen cuts straight across on a fixed armature held steady by chewing gum connected to the ceiling by a wire . My turntable works great an cost less than 40 bucks . I challenge u to find a better system for that price :)

Everyone starts somewhere. You said it yourself you started with a cheap table and then moved up. That's how you get into a hobby. Musicians start with cheap equipment and upgrade as their skill improve, this goes with all hobbies. If we all start with good equipment then we will never appreciate it. And if we start with cheaper equipment and decide its not for us then we are out very little. Most people try things until they find something that they like.

Subbed! I never wanted the suitcase all-in-one record players. It just seemed to defeat the purpose. I want the TRUE vinyl experience and sound.

I got a Victrola with built-in speakers at Walmart and no matter how much I clean my modest collection of 11 records they pretty much all skip. I thought if I got some plastic sleeves to replace the default paper ones it would help but all it did was make the album cover bulky and putting them back in a hassle. Glad I found this so I know it’s not just me being stupid.....mostly not me being stupid. Any way I can get sleeves that don’t bulk up the album cover?

Never mind. Watched another video and realized I got sleeves that go around the whole album. 😑

Really good question WHY because i have one potentional reason of this )))
Early ive been collecting just CDs, then decided to buy vinyls because: they looks uniq, some of them not quite easy to find, and some of the albums i love are existing just on such format. Later i got into tapes. Trying to keep em fresh and unplayed/sealed because i can listen the such thing on PC. But with a time i realise the records really gives another feel about playing and even collecting with a free space to storage them ha ha). And it really depends on the equipment you use while listening. I already spoiled one my fav (and pretty limited version of a record) with my grandfather's Panasonic National turntable from the 60es. Later got the turntable 3 in one (not Crosley but similar with a construction) and played a few records on it - surely it didnt brought the sound i looked for so later i bought average new one and still have a problems with it's adjustment and installment. Hope i can fix all the things in the future that not allows me to finally enjoy the sound i really wish to hear with my not bad active speakers.
Sometimes i regret about holding all of the vinyls cos as you said Matt - it's quite expensive hobby. Trying to resell some of my collection to earn additional cash on more records i want and it seems eternal and it really caused on a space to hold all of them...in anyway...i love what im buying, collecting and listen and i think that motivates me to live...really : D
P.S. Thanks for all the videos you making for us Matt. Love to enjoy every good thoughts and advices that goes from you to our ears )
