This just shows what a good development program can do. Ryan Huska has coached most of these younger players, and the systems the Wranglers and Flames have implemented are similar so players can come up and slot right in. As a Flames fan, they are playing with house money. The younger players are getting a feel for the NHL and making the most of their opportunities. Dustin Wolf is just getting better and better. If I'm Craig Conroy, I'm not rocking the boat too much. I'm only making moves to improve the team for the next few years, when they really hit their stride.
Yeah, agreed - this is a very good take for sure! I still hope they make the playoffs, I am happy to see them try and compete with this transitional period of bring up young blood.
Being on the edge of the playoffs with being 20 million under the cap is pretty wild. Wolf being able to stop NHL shooters so well in his first year is a Kuzmenko 'very interesting'. Biggest difference is Flames being able to win more against low point teams compared to prior years
As an Oilers fan, I want the Flames to make it. Its nice to see Huberdeau changing his style of play into a powerforward. Wolf, Coronato and Zary are exciting kids to watch. Sharangovich needs to pick up his production though

A Flames fan here . I loved the old Battles of Alberta . I would love to see both Alberta teams be good at the same time but at this point not looking like it will happen for a bit .
At the beginning of the season I was all team tank. But as the season has gone on I think it’s better to get playoffs and lose our pick to MTL than barely miss and still lose our pick. It’ll also be a great experience for the rookies who will probably be the foundation of the flames for years to come
There’s no experience to be gained from getting curb stomped in round 1. Did all the years of horrid playoff performances from this team not teach you that? This team needs to cut the crap, offload pretty much every quality player not named Andersson or Wolf. And tank for 2-5 years. Stack picks, draft high, and build a team that way. This team has never picked inside the top 3. Until that happens, this team will never even sniff a chance at the cup again.
The Flames are great at staying in games, giving themselves a chance of getting points in almost every game. They don't get blown out, and they don't blow out teams. They also beat the bottom teams in the league. They get a big save when they need it and can get a big goal when they need it from up and down the lineup. If you look at their team stats and where they rank in the league, they really should be in the bottom 10. They have one of the worst shooting percentages, worst average goals for, worst face-off percentages, and worst pk percentages. Yet they always find a way to remain in games and have a chance at getting pts which is why they're above the playoff line half way through the season with poor team numbers.
I think Wolf has been such a good story this season. The Flames traded Markstrom in order to give him a legitimate chance and he has done nothing but prove them right. He has been outstanding and without him the Flames woykd be way closer to where everyone thought they would be before season started.
I think a big thing with the flames was said by Vladar in an interview: "hungry bastards". No absolute standouts aside from Wolf probably but you are going to have to work to win against them. This shows in how their games go with low scoring affairs and 4 lines bringing it every time they are out there. Definitely catches some teams off but I think the stronger parts of the league might start waking up to them
I don't think Vladar has done all that bad. He usually does the second of the back to back and he has not much offensive support in many of those games.
Lifelong flames fan. First time seeing them in the playoffs was 2015 when they snuck into that wildcard spot and managed to make it to the 2nd round. I’ve never been team tank, I think it’s better to give your young guys that experience in the playoffs and to get that winning culture back in Calgary that’s been lost since the 2022 season. You tear it down to the studs you’re left with inexperienced players who get demoralized with every loss because the nhl is way more challenging than juniors or the AHL. Chicago, buffalo Anaheim are good examples of this. Those players look so demoralized. Zegras scores a goal and looks empty. Bedard got his 100th point and wasn’t even smiling. You wanna see your team succeed but you’ll have a better chance if your team makes you happy to be there, less likely to walk in free agency
Flames are guaranteed a win tomorrow, as the Blues have to keep up their .500 record consistent! As a St. Louis fan, I live like a Meeseeks… existence is pain!
Blues fan since 1968. I’m afraid you’re right. We are a mediocre, 0.500 team, so effing Kadri and the Flames will probably win Thursday night. We just can’t string a winning streak together. Maybe we should donate a cattle prod to Coach Monty to “Wake the Boys Up”. Or bring back a little Craig Berube “Tough Love”.
I'm happy with anything this season haha the main thing is that this team is actually fun to watch again, and the way they've turned the culture around makes it feel like they've got a chance in any given game even when outmatched by a ton of skill players. Big fan of Kuzy still, hoping the dude can find a few lucky bounces or something to get him rolling. Not too worried about Sharky though, he definitely took a minute to warm up after his injury but it seems like he's starting to find the net again
To be fair valdar gets the rough starts. He gets the powerhouse teams, he get the 2nd game on a back to back. He never really the problem, we just struggle to score specially when he in net. So the numbers look bad but he playing good.
Wolf just beat Los Angeles two games ago, and has shut out Florida, also has played against Winnipeg. The workload and difficulty of teams has been fairly similar. I'll agree that the offence seems to be even worse when Vladar plays, but his numbers are undeniably inferior.
@gamingintrospection im not saying anything bad about wolf. When the coach feels he on his game he in net no matter who they are against. But they do protect wolf at times. Why wolf hasn't played the 2nd game of a b2b all year. And Valdar doesn't get to see weaker teams (not on a b2b night)
Surprising for how big Vladar is (6'5"), he plays small in the net, often on his knees making him 3'6" (giving up the top). Alas, that's the style these days when the puck would hit him if he would at times just stay on his feet.
Probably not this year, but the emergence of Dustin Wolf as a future star G in the league is the real story in Calgary. He will be dragging them into the playoffs whether they deserve it or not many times in the next decade.
Nasville is the real surprise under performer in the West this year. I don't see Calgary keeping this up unless they find some scoring at the trade deadline.
Calgary has always had good defense in their history. And they also play way better as under dogs than when they're favorites to win. They have the best team chemistry of all the teams that are chasing them for a playoff spot
It is imperative Conroy doesn’t lose sight of the long term plan. Adding at the deadline is fine if they’re still in the mix for the playoffs, but they shouldn’t be anything more than rentals of one year remaining. Cap space isn’t a concern, but bogging down with more vets on long term big money deals would be detrimental.
Anderson still has a year on his contract after this one. So Conroy has time, but he would probably be more valuable to a team who expects to be in the playoffs this year and next.
The west is WAY more competitive this year than the east. The 4th-12th ranked teams in the west are way more dominant than the top 8 teams in the east.
That upcoming schedule is very sobering and will be the straw that break's this underdog's back. Wolf can only do so much as a rookie and as Shannon mentioned about other rookie players, he may hit that 'wall' and fatigue. With an unspectacular backup in Vladar and anemic offence, there won't be any playoffs in Calgary's sights once the 4 Nations tournament begins. I've been happy seeing them overachieve though, nice that they weren't out of it by November. Thanks for checking back in with this team!
The Flames should stick to their long range plan and not make any radical changes to try and make the playoffs, but if they find themselves close later in the season, they should play all-out to make it. That means don't tank. The management should be looking long range, but from the coach & player level, they should be trying to win every game. What they need, eventually, is a game breaker type player. If they finish, as usual, in the 12-18 range, that means they're gonna have to get lucky in the draft like they did with Johnny Gaudreau.
Calgary has a good home record because most teams on the road use their starting goalie against Edmonton and Vancouver, leaving their back-up goalie to play against Calgary. Need to see what Calgary can do against a steady diet of starting goalies before any conclusions can be made about them.
If Sharangovich gets off the shneid and starts scorring more, Zary nto out for too long; Coleman starts getting a few more goals too, then this team could catch LAK. A lot of ifs but solid defense and goaltending, good contributions offensively from the kids, Huberdeau having a rdemption season of sorts, Kadri Ok even; just need a couple other things going their way.
As a Flames fan, they're a lot more fun to watch this year, but I'm not getting my hopes up about playoffs. Even if they manage to sneak in, it'll be a quick exit. The future looks bright, but they still have a long way to go. Wolf is great, and the team is playing well together, but they just don't have enough scoring talent to do any real damage.
Im a bit skeptical, even as a flames fan. Losing Zary massively hurts our chances. He will be back this year, but it may well be too late. I feel like the way we're pacing, we will eventually fall off a bit down the stretch. The plus side is that according to Huska and Conroy, at this point they are looking to move away from the rotations in net, and Wolf will likely be getting the majority of the starts now, which might help counter the potential fall-off as the season goes on. Its so close... But at this point I think we just miss it, purely because thats the typical Flames way. We just don't score enough.
The team is fun to watch, I'm still wanting them to finish bottom 10 this year, losing a top 11 to 18 pick to Montreal is going to sting. I know Bettman is hating the Flames for making a mockery of the Cap system. Bottom 3 in Cap and hanging around the playoffs, the refs will never let them past the first round.
@Halusinati I agree with that. He wouldn't be still carrying the A if he hadn't changed his ways. I think guys like him and Huby are very important for the youngsters' development
I dont think Vladar really has much value to be honest. Not with how he’s played this year. Yeah they could trade him, but they’d need a backup in return so I don’t see them “trading up” or getting anything additional on top of another backup.
The only way the Flames will make the Playoffs is, if Flames management leaves Wolf in the net for 75 - 85% of the rest of the season. Vladar is god awful with his movement around the net. He is always doing a starfish on his belly when there is a scramble.
I'm waiting for a big collapse but then again its nice to see the players enjoy winning. Yet this is usually what plagues the team over so many years, stuck in mediocrity. Playoffs would be cool for the kids to get experience, so in that case go for it, I wont be disappointed if they fall out of the race either.
@@gamingintrospection After the Flames were eliminated, that was it for Johnny Gaudreau. He was traded to the Blue Jackets and never went to the playoffs again. And sadly, in August of last year, Johnny and his brother Matthew were both hit and killed by a drunk driver.
Calgary is interesting for sure. Even if they could sneak into the playoffs, they surely won’t go deep into them. To me, they should still treat this as a “last year or maybe 2nd to last year of a rebuild” It’s not worth calling the rebuild done too soon. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. If they give up prospects or draft capital just to get bounced in round 1, that will hurt them a ton long term. I’m not suggesting they should tank, but they should definitely approach the end of the year as a seller looking to acquire assets.
I’m a Flames fan. And I’m sorry. But I’m sick of this team being nothing but pretenders. I’m praying that they fall off hard, and more so DO NOT acquire people at the deadline. This team will, mark my words, get obliterated in round 1. Assuming the goaltending can even carry them there in the first place. What this team desperately needs is to be a genuinely bad team for 3-5 years, and stack draft picks in the meantime. So they can actually build a team. This team has never, not even 1 time, drafted in the top 3. Ever. Time to stop operating a team doomed to mediocrity. Sacrifice middle of the pack outcomes now, for far more success down the line. I’m sick of watching this team try the same strategy over and over again.
@@joeyg1463 okay. Congrats, you named 2 teams who failed in their rebuild. Would you like me to list off some teams for you that massively improved after being bad for some years and did a rebuild? There’s plenty of them in the league right now, as we speak. Rebuilds can fail. Yes. There’s no guarantee that they will work. But you know what also doesn’t work? Trying the exact same thing over and over and over and expecting a different result. Which is precisely what this team has been doing for the last 15 years. And, surprise surprise. They’ve accomplished absolutely nothing in the post season in any of those years.
@@smokinsteve2101 I know this team has accomplished literally Jack all in the playoffs in the last 20 years, since they made the finals in ‘04. All while trying the same strategy. If it’s not clear as day to you that they need to actually commit to a rebuild. That it would appear that you’re the one who doesn’t know Jack shit 😂 There are only 4 teams in the league who have scored less goals than the Flames. The goaltending is literally shouldering the entire roster into a playoff spot. The problem is that won’t continue in the playoffs. When things get more rough, and the refs begin to put the whistles away. But hey man, if you really want to see this team barely make the playoffs, and get slammed in round 1, for the 5000th time, be my guest. Clearly you haven’t been a fan long enough to be exhausted by that outcome by this point. But don’t worry, it’ll come.

I dont think Vladar really has much value to be honest. Not with how he’s played this year. Yeah they could trade him, but they’d need a backup in return so I don’t see them “trading up” or getting anything additional on top of another backup.
They have devin cooley whose one of the best tendys in the A this year they would be more than fine with out vladar
The only way the Flames will make the Playoffs is, if Flames management leaves Wolf in the net for 75 - 85% of the rest of the season. Vladar is god awful with his movement around the net. He is always doing a starfish on his belly when there is a scramble.
The Canucks don't have it this year
They don't, and it's a letdown. Toch is a great coach, and it was awesome to see them rolling last season. The mojo is just gone.
I'd love to see Flames face Oilers in the playoffs.
Me too and I live in NJ brooo
I do too, oilers would beat them but it'd be entertaining to see them battle
That happened in 2022. The Oilers SWEPT the Flames in round 2 that year, only to BE swept out in the Western Conference Final by the Avs.
@@robertsparling917 Nope. Calgary won the first game 9-6 before the Oilers won the next 4.
@@gamingintrospection After the Flames were eliminated, that was it for Johnny Gaudreau. He was traded to the Blue Jackets and never went to the playoffs again. And sadly, in August of last year, Johnny and his brother Matthew were both hit and killed by a drunk driver.
Must be the NHL on Prime partnership given the flames more exposure
Wow what a stupid thing to say…
@smokinsteve2101 wasn't ever a 🔥 fan until watching a few of their games on Prime. Kind of becoming a 🔥 fan as well now
Prime
I like seeing Calgary succeed, but as a St. Louisan, y’all gonna have to get out of the way. Sorry
lol, game on. Loser takes a dive off of that arch.
He'll, yeah, LGB
Lol be better
Yes we want battle of Alberta.
Calgary is interesting for sure. Even if they could sneak into the playoffs, they surely won’t go deep into them. To me, they should still treat this as a “last year or maybe 2nd to last year of a rebuild”
It’s not worth calling the rebuild done too soon. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch. If they give up prospects or draft capital just to get bounced in round 1, that will hurt them a ton long term.
I’m not suggesting they should tank, but they should definitely approach the end of the year as a seller looking to acquire assets.
You could say that about alot of teams
Rebuilds arent a gaurantee for success...cough cough sens and sabres....cope
You know everything hey? You dont know shit all
@@joeyg1463 okay.
That it would appear that you’re the one who doesn’t know Jack shit 😂
There are only 4 teams in the league who have scored less goals than the Flames.
God I hope they don't make it in.
Blues will take the final spot for the crossover.
Looks like luck to me
After 43 games?
Sounds like you dont have a clue
@ they remind me of the Caps from last year. Enjoy your year of mediocrity and a 1st round sweep.
