I had the same experience. My hair is thick and it is curly/wavy, except now and then it gets straighter in certain spots, so I use this to add a few waves and curls where they are needed. It is fine for that....when I blow my natural hair straight to get rid of the frizz and then try to curl it with this...I get very random curls as well!
