Like a lot of other birds that directly feed their chicks for a period of time after hatching, seagulls catch food, swallow it, then return to their chicks and regurgitate it for the chicks to eat. That's a great idea. Yeah, herons and cranes and even crows do the same thing. Even if the duckling escapes, sometimes it's either paralyzed or can't walk / thrash around.
