$400... That took me by surprise. Why would anyone buy this? I wanted a basic 'phone' phone for my business number a few years back and got a really good one with a nice thin design and similarly modern looking screen for less than $30 new.

I imagine there's probably an Android based OS that you could flash into modern hardware that similarly limits your functionality and probably gives you much more than 2 days operation time. I mean if I left my screen off all day the battery probably wouldn't dip more than 5%. I get 2 days out of my phone already with about 8 hours screen on time.

110 or 1100? There's one model with no Camera memory card nothing, the kind used on Military Bases. Is that the model you're talking about, which they usually sell in pairs, one white one black. I can't recall the model number correctly, but I'm guessing it's close to what you stated. I loved the 1108 which was nothing but the 1100 with a white backlight screen instead of green. Brilliant battery life and worked like a champ!
Also miss my Sony Ericsson W810i K750i. Those Earphones of J Beat or Bass series was really good, but flimsy AF peeling wires! I went through a Long Line of Handmedowns bought phones etc back in the day, Nokia Alcatel Moto Ericsson Sony Ericsson even les bricks, can't get the batteries or I actually can revive some of them still in some box somewhere to work because I treated them well. It isn't a piece of crap. It does what a phone is suppose to do, which is call telephone numbers where you actually speak to the other person. The modern phone is not a phone so much as a computer that you sometimes, rarely talk on. Imagine having to interact with those around you instead of being the zombie lurching about never looking up from TicTok. That would certainly be terrible, huh? Or actually remembering phone numbers? Or actually talking to someone instead of texting! WOW! Terrible.
And this is sarcasm by the way since many of the audience is unable to parse sarcasm because of all the above aforementioned reasons. You never talk to anyone any more...

This interests me. I actually replaced my Nokia phone with an Alcatel because I needed 4G for phone calls. I object to the concept of a "smart phone". It's an ultra portable PC, so I think continuing to call it a "phone" doesn't make any sense to me. The Nokia phone I used to use worked great and the Samsung flip phones/clamshells I used before my Nokia worked well too. My Alcatel phone works, but it's bluetooth support isn't very good. I use bluetooth for making/receiving hands-free calls while driving. Thanks for the info about Nokia!

@@TheCocoaDaddy You're welcome! Yes, I do agree the old phones were great in their own respect for the basics, The Alcatel I had was IIRC The One Touch Easy DB with an Orange Backlit screen. There were other interesting models like the Samsung push out to reveal keypad more egg shaped compact ones and the one the size of a Cigarette Lighter, and Too Costly For Those Days Made Famous By James Bond Movies Nokia with the Slide Down I think that was the 8850 or 8250 around the time of 8310!
Also newer additions like the Panasonic with a jog dial and light weight which resembled the Sony Audio Set's Remote Control! Far from the Bricks of Nokia Communicator Motorola Ericsson etc way back when, but if you wanted a mini weapon if needed those heavy bricks could do the job in cracking someone's skull or teeth! Lol
In Regards to Mobile Communications Safety, it would not be a good idea to use Bluetooth in general. They have single ear handsfree Wired with mic and answer cut call button, some with even Volume controls as well, that is since you mentioned about calls on driving and it's always better to have one ear on the road when you do get on the phone while driving, so you can continue to speak in privacy without anyone listening in on LEBT hacks AirHacks or Chainlink Track&Trace in Realtime, etc, and you don't miss out on what you generally do but hopefully doing it the right and safe way!
It's called phones sticking to the patenting scheme of things as long as it uses a Sim or Carrier Aggregated Technologies like CDMA WCDMA GSM even Specific Carrier hard coded/locked Devices, basically anything with calling and SMS retained the Phone title and Computers/Laptops etc meant anything with a separate set of devices for computational tasks Motherboard SMPS CPU Cabinet Monitor Keyboard!
The bigger screen phones got the classification as "Phablet" as in it's a Phone cum Tablet retaining a Sim slot for GSM calling SMS functions, later WiFi Bluetooth added to the Mix with the memory card slot later on! And Because Phones were getting close to Computer level in Future iterations, Smartphone classification began, something like SmartTVs that tracked your every word and Move, but the term phone added in due to Sim Carrier Calling SMS features of Yore!
Hope that helps in some way!

Some things are made bad, ( or good depending on your point of view, Lol), with SmartPhones that you might not expect.
I used to walk along streets, lanes, and back lanes sometimes at night, sometimes late. Once in a while I saw someone doing something they most likely would have preferred no one to see. You don't need a look-out any more. You see the search light used on an approaching persons SmartPhone or hear the film being watched on it.
Maybe some of the simple phones also have good lights? Mine doesn’t. In Germany we have had for years very simple cheap phones intended for older people. I have one of those, I have no smartphone, but I have lots of PCs and Laptops, just a couple new, most old, some very old, all laying around in different places, sometimes used for specific things, and a few that can be easily carried around occasionally, even on cycle trips. That combination works better for me.
A mobile phone is extremely useful, IMO. A PC or laptop also. Too many things I don’t like about SmartPhones to mention, (and in any case, if I do, the UA-cam algorithm comment Police Bot always deletes the post! They're on its unlike list, which it doesn’t like)

For people like you and me and most of your audience who own several capable computers, a smartphone may be unnecessary and actually a bit too much, and we can ponder and practice switching to a simpler phone as a way to get away from attention-grabbing media. However, for many people their phone is their main and only computer, probably because they can't afford a laptop or a desktop PC. Those people need things like email and various chat apps on their phone in order to be successful in today's society. I just want to point that out so we can have some empathy for people who may not have the reasonable capability to switch to a feature phone like this.
Regardless of that, it is getting harder for anyone to not have smartphone because more governments and companies are requiring them for things like crossing borders, viewing a menu at a restaurant, and I'm sure others can chime in with more examples.

Something like a Nokia N82 which is a compromise with smartness (SIP [for SIM-free telephony],Maps,Browser,emal,...) but with a small screen and no touch will be a lot better. N82 was running Symbian S60v3 (keypad based) before the Symbian touch variants.

All you have to do Chris, is apply a little self-control and you'll find that the smart phone is a complement to your life-so long as you use it as a tool and don't get addicted to it. Personally, I don't find myself distracted by my phone much at all. I loathe to use it to check emails and prefer to use it for just messaging and notifications while performing most of my work on my PC. But yeah, you got a piece of shit phone there for real and it's designers should be shot.

Here's an alternative, Unihertz Jelly 2. 3" Android phone with 2000mAh battery. Turn off all notifications except sms, access Google Messages from a laptop, the Linux phone with keyboard, or in my case, a Planet Computer Gemeni. Lasts a day or two, fits in a pocket, and I can run my bank app on it. Then whenever I take a break I can get my Gemini from the backpack and do the other stuff, write job sms, or whatever. When I'm finished I turn off my Gemini and put it back in my backpack.
Punkt, Light Phone II, the new Nokias, they're all cool and so, but they all lack the one or two functions that I must have. (Bank app)

I guess maybe I'm the odd one out on this, but it's the way I have always used devices. If nothing else, turn off "social media". It's adds NOTHING useful to your life and makes you upset. Your life will be better without it. Try it for a week.

There are even flip phones with Android that can do tethering, but they're still in the same price range as the others. Maybe for the aesthetic they can charge a bit extra, maybe $50, but I'm not seeing how it can be anywhere close to $400.

Dude, my dad's last Nokia phone before he switched to smartphones (that's probably at least 12 years old now) is way better and more capable than this. Personally, if I had to switch to a dumb phone, I'd much rather get that one. You should also try getting an old Nokia phone next (and change the battery since it's probably not gonna hold much charge) and tell us your thoughts. Great video btw!
Edit: Also, there are ways on newer smartphones to limit your access to social media, I think those will be better for most people rather than switching to a dumb phone, since smartphones can also be extremely useful with all the features they come with.

Without digital towers we wouldn't have SMS, data connections, media streaming, HD content, and so on. Connection to a digital tower is not "worse", it has to do with wavelength and how waves are transmitted (how waves have longer and shorter frequency). A device has to be closer to a digital tower to have the same voice (and I emphasize that is only voice) quality than using analog signal to an analog tower. And that is the ONLY advantage of the analog signal over the digital signal.
