It seems to me as if it acts more as a Loudness switch. But hey, I'm listening on a Bose system on my computer. Also, these were designed to replace lost dynamics on tape and vinyl, not mp3 files.

First I really like your Mitsubishi. How many WPC? Think it was called a tuner/amplifier (back in the day), A truly excellent piece of equipment. Now on to the Pioneer RG1. The first processor I saw was this unit at a friends (girlfriend) apartment. I always thought an equalizer was essential for good sound till I heard this RG1. By the time I got the dough, the RG2 was out so I got that.
I think it was 1980, and its still working. No repairs for 36 years. Is that quality construction or what! The RG1 was and is a good unit. Classic styling, good design.
You just have to be careful with the dynamic expansion control. Set at 8 for classical music and don't go above 10 for rock, or you'll get a pumping sound. Unless you like that effect. Also use care with the input level, remember if you raise the input level you're asking for more power from your amp. Not a lecture, just FYI. Those VU meters are really nostalgic, hell of a processor.
The DBX were better units. but at three to four times the price, I'll stick with the Pioneer's. Effective basic expanders, the RG1 and RG2 got some good reviews back then. Also liked the Men At Work tune. Don't ever sell it!

Oops, my bad. The RG 2 has expansion settings of 4, 7, 10, 13 and 16. I meant to say 7 for classical music. The RG 1 has settings of 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14. You don't want to set expansion too high for classical music or it sounds unnatural. Also I know that wasn't Men At Work playing.

All of the videos on UA-cam do not show it being used for what it was made for to make vinyl record sound better so this is not a true demo. Using a digital track to demo this thing is just dumb they sound really good already.

That's been my frustration watching "demonstrations" of this and the RG2

So basically it’s like a “loudness” button on an amp?
