Let's see some videos on simple blacksmithed bushcraft gear that you can make decently easy. I would love to see that!

I'd also recommend looking at the Bullseye Bucket forge kit at Whiskey Knives, it's the same price but comes with a small anvil shaped object and tongs, there is assembly required though, the kits are made in Kentucky if that matters to you.
Disclaimer, I am a former employee of the place that makes them and helped develop the forge and kit,
I get no kickback of any kind by mentioning it but feel that the disclaimer is important nonetheless.

Some drawbacks of the Bullseye Bucket forge kit: it's a single burner forge, which means getting it to, say, welding temperatures will be problematic. It's noticeably smaller than the Majestic in volume, and doesn't seem to come with any fire brick, fire wool insulator, or refractory materials. Also, it's closed up in back, so your limited to projects that fit the limited length of the forge body. Still, it does include a small anvil and tongs, and that's not terrible.

I don't know about now, but 6 months ago it did come with refractory: firebrick, kaowool, and satanite. the back was) removable, and it's actually set up for the possibility of dual burners, but it definitely won't reach forge welding temperatures with a single burner. We actually viewed the inability to reach welding temperatures as a good thing for beginners as it would reduce the risk of burning up the steel by accident.
It is smaller than the Majestic, I really only mentioned it because I saw a couple of people mention issues of space, and the Bullseye forge was designed for people without much space.

Sorry, I didn't mean to stomp. I should probably have posed some of that as questions. But I am curious if it looks as insufficient to you as it did to me when I looked it up.

Yes it has a couple of major deficiencies for a "real" or fulltime smith, such as heating area and temperature range.
However, it does alright when used as designed.
It was designed for the person that wants to get into blacksmithing but doesn't know where to start and/or doesn't have room for a full size shop. hence the bucket concept where everything you need fits into a 5 gallon bucket and the bucket doubles as a quench bucket.
I've forged small blades in the prototypes and it's a bit slow to heat up the metal, but I don't see that as a detriment as it also keeps a greenhorn from burning up his/her steel in it when they aren't paying attention.
hmm, although I could see some issues with people working metal that isn't hot enough, which has its own problems.
All that being said, I wanted one while working there, and I only felt that way about a couple of the dozens and dozens of things I worked on.

I bought a Majestic forge a couple months ago and love it. I haven't given my coal forge much attention lately though.

Six to eight months on a hundred pounder but that depends on how often and what you're doing

A forge is definitely on my wish list. Not sure the neighbors in my HOA want to hear me beating hot metal into the wee hours of the morning though. However, if you haven't had the chance to heat and beat metal, I highly recommend it. Such a stress reliever, and it's awesome to make your own stuff. Thanks for the video Dan. What type of anvil and other equip do you have?

  • @zackoddy8353
    @zackoddy8353 5 років тому

Instead of the piece of metal you have to block heat you should use firebrick, the hold in heat more and they are also more durable and wont warp if heated to hot like to steel plate would. Thank you for the video very helpful!

I will probably duplicate this question on your most recent video, because i am "desperate" for advice.
I recently bought this forge, and have fired it twice now. I've built 1 propane forge previously, but had a critical failure when enough heat used the burners as a chimney, causing damage to the propane fittings and hoses. I am now experiencing a similar effect with the majestic forge. have you experienced this? how do you combat this? am I doing something wrong? I have the regulator putting out about 5-7 psi, and the burner valve 100% open.
additionally, i am concerned that too much residual heat (in the form of flames) is escaping out the mouth of the forge, exposing the uninsulated walls of the forge and proximity to the heat. is this normal? or what should i be doing to avoid this?

dude, the big black knob sets the pressure, the small one turns the flow on and off. you should def not block off the back w steel. if you wanna use one burner you can block off inside the chamber. if you really need to (even tho the mfg ays not to) you shld block the back w a fire brick. maybe stick to coal, yo.

You can get a piece of railroad track from eBay pretty cheap. I use a 20lbs anvil shaped object I bought from Amazon. It's not hardened, and I surely lose a lot of energy from it bouncing around, but it gets the job done.
