It's been ages since I checked out ZC. Seems like it's come a really long way, I don't remember diagonal movement or a bunch of other things I'm seeing here. There were games using GBC tilesets, but they still played like Zelda 1.
A lot of this is done in-engine but there's also a custom-built Z4/GB style engine implemented as well. It incorporates enemy knockback, GB style bombs and swimming, as well as an extensive library of GB enemy variants. It's been built from scratch by Mitchfork, who's also working on his own project, Crucible Crest, as well as Peril of Rectangle Country. I highly recommend checking out the demos for both of them on PureZC. ZC 2.55 has come a long way, but Mitch's work is what really makes all three of these projects shine!
@@tacochopper Ah, that's amazing! Link's Awakening was my first Zelda game, and although I have played the first, I don't enjoy the feel of the movement or combat very much so I haven't played many ZC games. I hope more good things come out of this custom engine!
@@eyeball226 I took a ten year break from ZC and upon returning I've found myself in a similar position to yourself! I think there's a lot of tropes that persist in ZC quests from 2003 to this day, purely based on things like player movement, puzzle/item/enemy diversity, and even just the sheer scope of quests in terms of gameplay time alone. I think an awareness of those tropes goes hand in hand with being able to perceive what makes a good game - and not just what a developer thinks makes a good Zelda game specifically. The mindset has played a part in Mitch's work being so crucial to the development of not one, but at least five quests so far!
the devs have just released a stable version of 2.55! it's miles above what 1.92 and 2.10 used to do. they're working on a 3.0 version now that will eventually include Z3-style scrolling!
Stop releasing trailers and early demos of your fangames. Learn from everyone else who got wiped by Nintendo. Say nothing and show nothing until it is done.
cryptic like "vaati vidya 3 hour elden ring video essay" or "i need to go onto gamefaqs and find a .txt walkthrough to figure out this dungeon's puzzles" because i hope it's neither
Ooh, I’m definitely interested in this!

Ah, Zelda Classic... Now THAT takes me way back. I'm wondering what the engine's like, nearly 15 years after I stopped playing around with it. XD

niiice
loved the GB Zeldas
Yo this looks sick!
Cool
Is it a good game or is it filled with cryptic crap like the oracle games.
its full of cryptic metaphors
EDIT: That was unnecessarily mean, I'm sorry. I guess I was in a bad mood.
What part of the Oracle games did you find cryptic?

c'est la vie
also there's been lets plays of this up for over a year and a half, i hope nintendo come hard for it if that's the case
This is a Zelda Classic campaign. If Nintendo haven't shut ZC down yet, I don't think this is in trouble.

Huh, two completely identical comments. Weird approach to spamming. Perhaps my meanness in the other comment was justified.
