  • The impressive Iron Bridge over the River Severn in Shropshire is an engineering marvel. Erected in 1799 and the world’s first free-standing metal structure, it used of the still-new development of fuelling local furnaces with coke, instead of charcoal, to make more affordable cast iron.
Explore this iron casting process and watch as we recreate a section of the bridge using the very same techniques used by the bridge builders over 200 years ago.

I love these videos! I do wish they were a little longer.

So do I. They are like bite sized documentaries, but I would like to see some longer videos every once in awhile.

I was going to comment the same thing! I really would love a little more detail in some of the videos. I was left curious whether the bridge is still used, what the iron works there creates now, etc.

I love Blists Hill open air museum and the Ironbridge area. It's such a valuable piece of our heritage. Without the technology used to construct the bridge we we wouldn't have our modern world.

So cool! It's amazing to actually pause and think about how these things were constructed and made back in the day. Thank you!

Why does the Wikipedia say it was opened in 1781 but video description says it was erected in 1799?
