      TECH HUB I disliked this video as I’m not confident in the motherboard or desktop “repairs”. More testing must be done. Especially with the desktop, the cost of shipping alone is substantial. I would be furious as a customer if the desktop was returned and the problem recurred

      I work based on the time for the job. Customers pay for my knowledge as well. a 5 minute fix is still an hour minimum rate, but something I have to work on for hours pays for my time as well. I'll do an initial diagnostic for free, and communicate with the customer once I have an idea what the bill could look like, then leave it up to the customer if it's worth the cost.

    When I work on desktop computer power supplies I always try to substitute with a known good one, just to be sure. I use the same power supply checker that you use (Thermaltake Dr.Power II) but I use it with a homemade adapter that puts a load on each of the important voltage rails (12V, 5V and 3.3v). I used a "Y" power supply connector and the female end of the "Y" connects to the power supply, one of the male ends goes to the Dr.Power II and the other male goes to my load board. The load board has some power resistors on it and provides a good load on each rail, which exposes any "weakness" it may have with respect to voltages. I have seen some power supplies that test fine with the Dr. Power II by itself, but fail when you put a load on it. The fault is usually caused by dried out electrolytic capacitors which you normally won't see unless you disassemble the supply (and who has time for that?)

    I would have been concerned about the HP computer. Yes, chances are the PSU connector just needed to be reseated. But maybe there is a cracked solder joint on the socket or inside the PSU - it's happened to me with an old MB which was working out of the case but not powering up inside the case. Of course you don't want to overthink the situation and start disassembling boards. Not sure what I would have done to be honest.

      Its not too hard to find.. there are many suppliers based out of China actually. For years I repaired HP DV based motherboards with the NVIDIA GPU's because of a defective design using shitty solder, and cooling that was not enough to handle the heat. I used to reball the GPU's and most of the time it was good, but other occasions I would need to replace the GPU, and you would be surprised how much searching I needed to do to find the proper replacement.
      I used to buy pallets of e-waste laptops, and would repair them to sell for a profit. A lot of them were purchased from Walmart by customers, and RAM and CPU was pulled and the laptops were returned and Walmart would liquidate them afterwards. Some had liquid damage, and/or broken ports, and/or had overheated. Overall, laptops that were not worth fixing, I would part them out to use for repairing other laptops, or to sell the parts separately. The #1 question I would get was regarding the source of the laptops, and people would get butt-hurt when I was not willing to disclose the info. I had to find out this info on my own as well, but one could try reaching out to e-waste based companies and do some digging to find out from there, and follow the chain of info if they are willing to disclose. I would turn it around on people and ask them if they would be willing to share the trade secrets regarding their company, and sometimes people would understand but other times that still was not good enough!
      If you bust your ass, and put your blood, sweat, and tears into a business you built up yourself.. would you be willing to disclose info like this to someone for free because they want to make money on this as well? Most of the people who asked me, were not even in that line of work and had the idea they would buy the pallets of electronics, and pay someone minimum wage to do the repairs for them, with a radioshack basic soldering iron!

    I'm not sure if your PSU tester (and any other, not specially your) are really trustworthy, a good number of dead psu will continue to work at a low load however, what this device cannot determine is at a high load, for example by playing a game which has the effect of shutting down the Computer. So the PSU may look like it's working but in reallity not

    • @nickabbott4411
      @nickabbott4411 3 роки тому

      Not turning on is a user reported thing. 1st rule of working with users is don't trust what they say haha. Could be something simple like the hdmi was plugged in after the pc booted and there was no signal. User says it didn't turn on but it did. Agree with the psu testing though it needs a load on the rails and a stress test to prove it works. May not work when a specific rail is being hammered.
