    Thanks for showing the NObile. It has done well for you. I have several growing in my collection. They are probably the easiest orchids I've grown. They bloom consistently in late winter for me. A delightful welcome to spring. Hope you are feeling better.

      I don't think I'll find them as easy to cultivate as you have found. A few of our members find them difficult. This is my first nobile so I'll give it my very best attention and keep my fingers crossed. Feeling better now Pat0thank you very much for asking.

    Thanks Ed very informative. I have two Nobile dendrobiums, and one has 3 buds (that is all) late in the winter I put them out in the greenhouse, and think I should have put them out sooner, as temp drops to 50. sure did the cymbidiums good so this winter, they will go out there for some time, and we will see. First time I have had blooms at all, and have never seen a live Den. except on you tube, so looking forward to these 3 flowering. Take care, Carolyn

      Good evening Jacolyn hope you are well and thank you for the comment. My cymbidiums are coming to after years of neglect ( which I am ashamed of ) they are growing well and a couple are in spike. This is the very first time I have tried a nobile so I hope I can get it to bloom again late in the year. I also hope that your three buds turn out to be real showstoppers.
      Take care and thank you.

    You sound much better than recent days. Continue on the path to good health. I enjoyed this one as I recently discovered I purchased a nobile hybrid not a phal den which it was advertised as. Purchased at discount with no blooms.

    My nobile only chucked out keikis during the growing season, which I planted back into the pot, & these are now all in bud. New growths starting at the base, so I’m glad I didn’t get a keiki machine. Mine lives outside and endures temperatures down to 5°C without any problems. It’s a garden center ‘species’ 😂

      Eds Orchids oh... uhm... I’ve got my issues, which I will showcase soon... oh boy! They are a disaster! One more season, and if they don’t pick up, they are gonna go. Except Garren Weaver... it’s growing really well in the growths department, but the leaves are an embarrassment! 😔

    Hi Ed,
    I’m fairly new at orchids, and I wonder if you can answer a question. Do you increase the feed and water when the plants are actively flowering and/or blooming? Thanks for your helping videos and any advice you can give me. Hope you start to feel better soon!

    • @EdsOrchids
      @EdsOrchids  4 роки тому

      Good evening Joanne and thanks for your question. As you probably know some orchids continue to grow all year and some have a rest period. The ones which don't have a rest period I feed and water all year round but refrain from feeding every 4th watering when I just flush the plant through with clean water. You can also flush with a little Epsom salts before the clean water flushing which will make sure that medium is free from salts. At the beggining of the growth season for all orchids a nitrogen fertilizer is used to facilitate their growths . Before Autumn comes I change to a stronger phosphate fertilizer to help with the blooming. The ones which have a rest period I keep cold in the winter months and give the a light watering once per month and no feed. Hope this has answered your enquiry.
      Take care in these troubled times.
      Ed

      I have made three batches of steak and ale pie filling Monday. If I become ill and don't fill like cooking. Its something easy to stick in the oven. And who doesn't like steak and ale pie. Stay well and look after yourself.

    Even the species nobile doesn't lose its leaves annually. A cane that develops this spring should retain its leaves until spring 2022 (meaning they hold them for one full season after they have matured). I'm not sure why they are classed as deciduous, seems silly.

      Phostrogen is difficult to find in Canada but it is available on Amazon. Not sure if it is the same formulation, as mine has no calcium but has magnesium.

    I have one nobiles left which hasn't flowered for several years, I believe its my fault as I repotted it into too big a pot as it was a large plant and used wrong medium, now it has some canes looking a bit shrivelled but not soft and alot of aerial roots but no flowers, should I cut the shrivelled canes, some people say leave them if they not soft and still green and hard in the center, I know for sure I need to repot it into a smaller pot in appropriate medium.

    • @EdsOrchids

      Nobiles are very aggresive feeders and need a cool climate. Indeed I've known some very good growers of these plants who give them very cold temperatures
      at the end of wintertime. They say that cold will produce blooms on the low part of the pseudobulbs as well as the higher parts. Make sure you give your plants much calcium.......not cabonate which the roots can't use.....use the nitrate which is readily taken up by the roots. Thank you Mary and take care,
      Ed.

    Made the mistake last year of hanging them too dark (had them all mounted) they dumped all the leaves and will not flower this year, they had to start from scratch, which they all do the're full of new canes,. Species are notoriously difficult I'm on my third one and it doesn't look like it's going to make it so I'm not trying those again

    Very good recap on dendrobium nobile types. Yours looks amazing. The only 2 notes I can add is that some varieties get quite tall. Others just don't get much taller than 8 inches. You will no doubt do your own experimenting. I have found that a couple of months of cool is necessary to induce flowering. But even more important is to make sure winter light be much brighter than summer light. If there is no light variation, I get no flowers, at least in my conditions. I accomplish this by making sure the nobiles have supplemental lighting only in winter. In summer, they get some direct dappled sun, but just part of the day.
    I hope yours bloom well for you.

    • @EdsOrchids
      @EdsOrchids  4 роки тому

      Thanks Res. I agree with you that they will flower better when given a long cold spell. I've put the led light up in the greenhouse so there will be no problem of light during the winter months. How are you going on there with the virus..........my brother is in lockdown in Edmonton. Look after yourself.

      So you have a Canadian connection? Sweet! As everyone else, we are expected to work from home. I am still expected to go in 2 days a week to perform essential services. I was in at work today and it was quite empty. Though the grocery stores are full of people buying water and toilet paper....
