Am I the only one who, upon reading the title, thought "he's gone and bought one of those giant coke bottle wagons"?🤣
No - you are not...
He already has one of those. But, yes, I did think that.
That came later
My first job in the mid 1960 was at The Appleby-Frodingham steel works. These wagons were still in use then.
Is this how the UK made their own version of the soda?
No this is for the other kind of coke😏
@@1stdaybreaker707 yeah, coke... caine
@@chargoesboom6990 🤫 shhh 🤐
These wagons would carry the coke that’s used in steel making. Essentially that type of coke is cooked coal.
When I rode the Ravenglass & Eskdake Railway in the late ‘70s, I spoke with one of the engineers who said their locomotives (River Esk was my favourite) all burned Coke instead of coal.
When I saw the title I was expecting a fleet of Coca-Cola wagons as there are so realistic 🤣
I like this video, its quite informative about the wagons, thank you for making these kinds of videos!
Thanks a lot James, really glad you liked it!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That coupler design is the same used on most if not all Hornby super detailed open wagons! Excellent video might just have to buy a few 🤣
Yes I've seen it on a few open wagons too!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Can you do the review of the Bachmann Standard Class 4MT 2-6-0?
Another interesting video Sam thank you. The wagons are very good in some aspects, namely the metal buffers and different metal wheels. I like the three holed version on the B R wagons. I don't own any myself but i will keep my eyes open for the B R version at the right PRICE. Thank you Sam for the review. 👍
I like these wagons from Hornby as well Sam and I would definitely buy many of them. Of course not from Hornby directly because I am very reluctant to buy anything from Hornby directly. I will buy any Hornby products directly from a retailer because they give you a reasonable Sam.
Thanks Bryan - yeah can't go wrong for the money, though I'm not a fan of buying direct from Hornby either... I avoid it whenever possible!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thankyou For The Great Video! The Appleby Iron Company Ones Will Go Great With The Kerr Stuart Victory Loco.
Thanks for another great review! Some of my Hornby mk1s have an issue with the wheel flanges touching the underside of the chassis and creating horrible drag - maybe it’s a question of using slightly different spec wheels.
I tend to by the steam era wagons but nearly always second hand. Other than the military stuff, I tend to go for LMS or private coal companies in the East Midlands. I have just bought a kit that is a correct ammunition wagon for the WWI railway gun.
Sam great review - I got some at the same time. Personally I think it was a dodgy batch hence being on sale. The ones I bought from Hornby when they first came out did not have the dodgy wheels. Perhaps these came in the same container as the B12. Just FYI the LMS lettering version is nice too. Cheers Shaun
Even with the slight deficiency in the rolling, I think, for the price you paid, I'd consider these as part of my layout. Maybe the wheels will free up a bit as they wear in? Even if not, the look pretty good on the railway.
Nice review Sam, get yourself a steel rule or take a butter knife easiest way of opening your boxes without ruining the tabs .
Awesome video today Sam beautiful wagons
Nice design for these wagons/hoppers! 👍
I think so too - great design! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hey Sam, great review as always!! Are you looking to review any O scale stuff at some some point? Cheers- Aiden
Lol, I was like: That's not a Coca Cola wagon! 😂
Good wagons , think they are very well priced at £14 , and would not want to pay more than £18, - good selection of livery, great bargain. Thanks for showing us Sam. P.s I do not see the point of sprung buffers. Metal yes, sprung not important.
Just watching this great review and I had a thought maybe you could 3D print some different coke loads for them
It should be noted, that when compared to model railroad association standards, these actually perform quite well. The NMRA (British) actually have given Hornby notes on how to best simulate the weight of the cars as empty, hence the 'drag' you noted. That's intentional.
Note: The Drag is to simulate the overall weight of the car itself. Modelers have, in the past, had to add hidden weights to cars to simulate this. However, with open cars like this, it's hard to do so. To counter this, model railroad companies have started making cars 'drag' as Sam notes. NMRA is the "National Model Railroaders Association" who work with companies to set standards for modeling.
If making rolling stock difficult for model trains to haul is one of their objectives, they need to seriously reconsider their purpose in life
I've bought some bargained when Rails of Sheffield was liquidating their Hornby stock. Can't remember the price, but it was close to GBP 14.
That's the kind of wagon that Dapol can sell below the GBP 20 mark. Around GBP 14/15, it is the right price, up to GBP 20 I would say. GBP 28, too high.
Seems to be the great Hornby liquidation of stocks from Hattons... They bargain hard coaches at one third of their RRP, I've bought some GWR ones in september below GBP 30 each. Unsellable items at ordinary retailer's price, they put them at what should be their real price ! And I'm convinced that they are not losing a penny with this bargain...
By the way, they are bargaining the Oxford Rail Deans good. Worth a buy at GBP 79 ?
Good vid Sam
Excellent video Sam. Have to say the Appleby Iron Co. was my favorite, hope to get a rake of three regardless of livery.
Can I ask what all they hauled? The name ‘coke hopper’ concerns me…
You have reviewed a lot of rolling stock this year. When you do your Top 5 Worst and Best Locos of 2022 vids, will you be doing a category for the rolling stock?
Thanks David - yeah that one is my favourite too! haha definitely not that kind of coke!
I will be including rolling stock in my final video of the year! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I live in North East Derbyshire the area was once a coal mining area until the 1990s. The term coke is another name for coal these type wagons would have transported coal from mines to an processing plant like Avenue Carbonation plant. The coal was processed into smokeless coke. Trade name was Sunbright Coke.
@@petercole2092 Ever since I heard the term ‘coke’, I’ve been wondering how it came about and what it was. Thank you so much!
When coal is heated in a sealed container/vessel it basically splits in to three forms: Solid, liquid and gas.
The Gas is coal gas (the forerunner of natural gas), the liquid is coal tar from which came the first synthetic dyes (among other things) and the solid is called Coke which is a very rough-surfaced brittle type of fuel. It looks like a foam that has gone hard. It was used as a smokeless fuel.
In the US, that wagon would come under the AAR Classification of H! That would stand for Hopper car, with a further subclass of B,for bottom dump! Add also the coke rails,as coke is lighter than coal, and can be carried higher in the car body! One real question, with the weight of loads carried, why NO POWER BRAKES?? After all, power brakes had been in use,for by then, almost 100 years??? Virtually all US, and Canadian cars, had air brakes, and center couplers from the early 1900's on,why did England lag behind?? Thanks for an interesting video, and critique!! Thank you 😇!
A note regarding older US coke hoppers. Many have moved on to new jobs hauling ballast, sugar beets, etc.
When they introduced the vacuum brake in the UK they only fitted locos and passenger cars. The goods wagons that were privately owned did not have them fitted. They probably thought that freight is not worth saving in an accident.
Got a few of these, very nice
Informative as ever Sam.
I've many Bachmann Freightliner bogie wagons with which I've played around with removing the moulded brakes, even fitting 'bearings' after drilling out the bogies to make room - still not amazing ... yet my 100 tonne TEA oil wagons are superb.
I received my Stanier Mogul - BR one - 2 weeks ago - and have now burnt out the motor!!
I found it appeared powerful, could even spin the wheels, and had a good turn of speed, then suddenly after perhaps 6 hours' total running, it suddenly started going very slowly.
Removing the body I saw the tell-tale bad arcing of the brushes on the commutator - poor quality brush material / too 'metallic' perhaps?
Looks like it's motor #2 already - certainly have no wish to send the locomotive back, but just a heads up to people - Bachmann steam locomotive motors are generally quite good, but cannot be used for many hours' running - I had her between 40-50% power when hauling 21 very free-running Dapol, Hornby and Mainline hopper wagons, plus a brake van - easy enough for a Hornby J15 so not heavy at all.
Al.
Awesome video Sam's trains
Thanks Brian! :D
@@SamsTrains you're welcome my dear friend
I went to a train show yesterday, it was a big one, I got some good stuff, also I'm thinking on sending you a Christmas card
I really like the LMS 2-6-0 Sam you should run that more often
Cheers Jasper & Willow
I agree - it's a shame I don't!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam, well guess you won’t be adding any loads into these wagons. They do look great though, and stayed in the track. Great video as always….missed the Hattons Hornby sell off, sorry sale. All best Marc
I could do... might be possible to 3D print some loads? Ahh sorry to hear that!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
nice coke hoppers and a nice price too.
i like your hoppers they are going to give a
nice rake behinde a nice br loco or a lms loco.
very intresting video i like it a lot.
👍👍👍👍🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪
Thanks Oden - yeah definitely a nice rake! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Nice looking wagons here Sam, need to look into some more freight stock myself at some point, I have just got hold of one of the rebuilt hornby W1 locomotives in the garter blue.
Did you see my comment on your Rapido dynamometer car video?
Thanks a lot David - ahh sounds good, this is a good place to start! I'll look out for your comment, thank you!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Do you have a video reviewing the LEC USA train series, or is this channel just for electric trains? Thanks.
These look really nice and detailed
Thanks Lewis, they sure are!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Will you look at a kr models bo-bo diesel and maybe the torpedo molten steel wagons
Sam tells it how it is!
Save your fingers Sam, and the risk of damaging the box by using an old rabones metal rule to tease the end of the box open. Now, where did I leave my anorak.....Love these videos
@Sam'sTrains I love ur channel Great videos from joey yard
Hi Sam,
Glad this seems a good model. I am thinking of getting a green one at some point to mess about with wagons. Shame about the weight and the finish seems decent. Also, I don’t understand that nonsense with the pick ups. Or rather lack thereof. Just defies logic to use a frictional part and deliberately design it to be run dry 🙄 Is there not a low density conductive grease you could use? 🤔
That is not at all rhetorical by the way as I am no sure if such a thing exists or I just imagined it 🤣😂😅
Cheers mate 👍🍀🍻
Nice coke stone wagons, their pretty good for 40 pounds, detailed enough not lacking to much
Thank! Yeah not bad for the price I paid, £14 mind you!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Opps my ears are playing tricks on me lol
I need some more wagons so I might get some, we'll see
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Sounds great - good luck! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Do you think overall standards of locomotives and rolling stock etc have deteriorated over the years or improved...we never seemed to get such as glue blobs painting issues etc even though details may have improved
I don't remember seeing a video on "Athearn Hoppers," has it not been released yet?
I bought four not so long ago. I think they are great for that price.
What types of loads do they carry?
I went "please tell me he added a break van, please tell me he added a break van, YESSSS"
Hi Sam. Would a little lubrication on the friction areas help do you think?
It might, though if parts are contacting it won't make much of a difference... careful adjustment of the brake pads/connecting parts would probably do it!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Any O gauge reviews on the horizon Sam? Been a long time since the last one.
can you pls review the bachmann s.c.ruffy
Nice wagons, though I won't be getting them, I just don't like how they tower over the breakvan, though they only look good if they were in a rake
Also could you look at the new tree on a flatbed hornby are putting out. I'm pretty sure they are out now
Coke (like charcoal) is a bulky, but light cargo. That is why coke hoppers have extended sides, because they can carry more.
Got a few Appleby when they were £22 on Amazon
Cheers Sam
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I wouldn't mind getting a few of these, as it's always good to have more variation in the frieght wagon department.
Cheers
Great price and look amazing
i really got excited at the words cheap coke
haha!! ;D
I’m telling your mum
Here's a idea make a streamlined train Witch is a mix of a A3 and A4
They look great, but that sort of drag issue id the kind of thing you expect on an old tri-ang wagon or a beat up old kit build, not something brand new.
Yeah exactly... it's quite frustrating!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Cracking deal you’ve made Sam. For the money you’ve paid, they are quite striking. The typical Hornby niggles perhaps but nothing too considerable, and for 14 GBP they are a spiffy purchase.
Thanks Linda - I'm really happy with these for the money! Overall a great experience! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Amazing coke wagons
Thanks Justin! :D
What's your favorite pre grouping livery from the southern UK? I like LBSC Umber Brown
Ooh tricky... I really like improved engine green!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Or GNR green!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains GNR? In the south?
Very good Sam 🙂🚂🚂🚂
Hola buenas tardes excelente video muy lindo el vagon abrazo grande😃👍
Wagons with drag issues then, maybe they ought to go with the rainbow hornby wagons??
Cool Sam :)
What is it with manufactures and wheels at the moment?!
Remember those lovely Dapol JHAs? Well the N gauge ones have arrived and most of them have such low clearance between the floor and bogies that the wheels rub on the underside 😮
Fitting a washer should not be part of a new wagon experience
What happened to the Brake van before the reverse points?
Hi Blue2sco.
It came off the rails then rolled down the loft-ladder and finished up in the bathroom below.
Sam didn't want to broadcast that bit as it was too embarrassing.
Paul.
Hey did you see that?? Your missing your brake van after that last test.
As a possible solution which you may or may not have thought off for the rest issue would be to shave the ends of the axles of the wheels. I've had to do that when putting metal wheels on some rolling stock. Now of course still unacceptable of Hornby but could be a solution unless they're running up against something else.
Really cool you bought 13 of these hope to see them in future videos.
Do you keep all the boxes from things like this?
NOBODY builds prototypes anymore Sam unfortunately, it’s just too expensive. Even in the world of real Railways you usually end up solving the teething issues once they’re in service (as a long experienced railwayman with SNCF, ask me how I know!). All thanks to CAD 🙄
They’re pretty nice wagons but they need some serious weathering (in which case the finish quality wouldn’t really matter).
Yeah, where I'm from, we call it pop, not soda or coke. Lol
15:20 "Hornby Sometimes I wonder about you"
haha!! ;D
Hello Sam A message from across the water, What I wanted to ask? How long are your standard carriages Are they shorter in length than on the European mainland Or is there a big difference, You have a nice show,s look at it regularly Greetings Henk Train Driver NMBS Belgium,s railway😀😉
Wonder if they will do a coca cola livery version of these!
hahaha that'd make odd sense ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Coke ain'' runnin' around my train
Do you have any ideas for more custom locomotives?
I do!! Just need the time to do them! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ha ha ha - £27 for a plastic wagon, and the wheels are jammed up against the bodywork - awesome - thanks Hornby, I like a good laugh!
Don't like the c.e. mark on the underside of the wagons. So not prototypical then?
It also says Made in China.😀
@@kiwitrainguy you ok . Ok give you a thumbs up.
13 coke wagons, that’s a lot of soda (IK it means the coke, the other coke, not the soda coke, the drug coke)
When I saw "coke wagons", I thought that they were coca cola wagons, but still interesting.
haha not quite!! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
At least these coke trucks are better than the other coke wagon hornby lazily made lol
what do they mean by 'coke' hoppers? i hope it dosen't mean drugs.
Coke comes from coal.
@@kiwitrainguy oops.
The gray ones are a bit boring especially compared to the United Steel wagons.
Quality definitely a problem with these. I bought one to see if the quality was worth the price and an entire side of the chassis came off on the first run 😒
Was very nervous that it was going to be more of those terrible Coca-Cola ones that aren't we produced.
haha very glad it's not one of those! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Looks amazing for the price, though the stiff axles ruins it for me very slightly and if you were to add a load your shunter will struggle to move a medium size rake of them. However the diecast chassis and metal handrails are a nice touch. If they would be free rolling I would have bought some but like this not really. Still great review, Sam 👍
One thing I know about coke is that it burns hotter than coal.
Was that Trying or Tri-ang. Lol
haha!
Hi
Top bro 😀👍🇧🇷
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
That level of drag, especially from wobbly axles is embarrassing. Barely fit for purpose. I have 1960s Playcraft wagons with less drag than that and they have plastic wheels! If it's because axle boxes are too loose presumably it's not even easily fixable?
They look nice but they still have some problems
Cheers Jasper & Willow
Yeah one or two, nothing major though!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Coke wagons!!??!!!?... Is that what they use for smuggling across the Mexican/U.S. border.
:-)
Sam I've got a test in like 24 hours and I still haven't revised, things have been quite overwhelming recently. 😢
Well I'm sure you'll do fine - good luck to you!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Crappy design for basics like wheel rolling seems like very poor form.
The rrp and quality isn’t acceptable. Terrible axels
