VW Beetle Shimmie's & Shakes - Cured!

- If your VW standard sedan Shimmies' and Shakes while driving then this video is for you. I suspected a worn out tie rod end but found something else.... (14:00 minutes)
There are some differences with type 3 and busses but the principles are the same.
The Super Beetle is a different animal because of the strut suspension and are notorious for having loose steering in old age. There is a steering coupler under the gas tank that wears out. You will have to remove the gas tank to get at it. Always be safe when raising the car. Use jack stands and block the wheels from rolling off your lifting device. - Авто та транспорт
Nice work GZ, keeping the box and other suspension parts in good shape can be a life saver . 👍
For sure! As always. Thanks for your support my friend!
Enjoying your videos once again EZGZ .... so glad you're back. I'm doing a full body off restoration of a Nova (ie a Sterling in the States) and your tips have been so helpful. Love your gentle style crammed with lots of tips! As we say here in Scotland ... "you're pure dead brilliant, so you are!" :)
That kind of flattery will get you a virtual burrito. What's the main fast food in Scotland anyway?
When the temp gets really cold, that's when the steering can bind up if adjusted too tight. I've seen locked and cracked steering boxes from getting it too tight. May want to check it next fall/winter as temps get cold, be safe! Thanks for the video!
Thanjks! That's interesting. I had a 1957 Ford truck with king pin front end. It would be hard to steer in warm weather and easy in cold winter weather. Usually metal shrinks when it's cold and expands when hot??? I'll probably change the box if I put the 2110 in as the seal at the bottom of the box is shot and lubricant leaked out.
Another video with great tips!
Thanks for posting!
Thanks for your support!
Good day Sir 😃😃😃.
Your very kind! Appreciate the support!
Great job 👍 always keep up with the front end parts. Have a great weekend...
Thanks, you too!
Awesome video. Thanks!
I can be pretty sure they would be lost.... if it don't have a cam bolt. There done.
When I took mine to get aligned, the owner said he would let me in the shop to step them through it.
Let me use his tools and together we got all 4 wheels headed in the right direction.
Great video.
Nice that they were willing to learn. :-)
Some good tidbits on the front steering and suspension...thanx
Glad you liked it!
Great work, thanks for putting us to work with you.
Your check is in the mail.... hehehe

Hi Man! Great video. I had a 73 Bettle Bug (Fusca in Portuguese), but it was so bad, and don't hava it anymore. But I want to buy other one. Thanks friend!
You should!
Yep excessive end float in the steering box once you wiggled the steering wheel
G'day EZGZ,
Kevin here from Australia.
Apparently with these older steering box's if you pump grease into them there like new. It can't hurt as vw changed to grease from oil in 68 i think.
Anyhoo keep safe and well man.
✌ Peace
Owe and by the way you were spinning that front wheel she needs her brakes adjusted.
Great Idea Kevin!
@@TheEZGZ hey i forgot to ssy i did it to mine on my 63 and no kidding its 1000 times better. Im loving your dog man . Aren't they just great company. ✌
👍 I want to see how you balance tires video.
Thanks! Noted.
What is the part number for those KYB shocks ?
You should put the speedometer cable under the left tie rod so it not rubbing on the top of the tie rod. Just thought I would mention it to you.
When the car is not jacked up and the wheel is not in full droop it's fine. But you have a good eye for detail. Thanks
Have you thought about installing studs on the drums? So much easier to put and take off the wheels with them. Empi sells them; just install them with red Loctite and you’re set.
I have studs on some of my cars and it is easier if you change them a lot. I've never struggled with the stock one's. Just turn the drum until you get one and then rotate it to the bottom. The rest just fall into place????
Thanks for the tips. What is the green color on you 66? I have one too in that color and trying to find the paint code.
As I recall it was a PPG product. Mint Green in a two stage base Clear. The blue was done in single stage and it hasn't held up well by comparison. The paint job is about 25 years old and was my son that did it
Hey I was recommended by another youtuber but I wanted to ask if you ever experienced extreme shuddering in reverse on even the slightest grade? The bowden tube looks right. The forward gears are perfect.
Thanks.
Oil on the clutch disc or loose springs. Maybe both
@@TheEZGZ Doesn't sound like a broken motor mount?
@@TheEZGZ by loose springs you mean the pressure plate springs?
a friend once asked me to check out his beetle he said the front end was vibrating just sometimes not always so i took it out for a drive and suddenly at about 40 mph it would vibrate not always just sometimes it vibrated so hard that it caused me to have blurred vison and i would have to pull in to the side of the road i checked everything that i could think of wheel balance all the joints steering box shocks damper wheel bearings etc everything seem to be ok and i never got get to the bottom of what was causing it .
Interesting......Background music from the twilight zone
My 68 bug keeps shuddering really bad. I thought the steering box needed to be tuned up but from watching a couple of videos and reading "How to keep your VW alive " I think it's the steering damper 🤔. I'm 19 and would love some tips from anyone on how to replace it myself. ✌️
just buy one and it's to nuts and your done! Don't worry about the brand.
@@TheEZGZ thanks!
So just adjusting the steering box did the trick?
I need new tires and a balance job. I'll show how I balance tires the EZ way

What should the float setting be ? Thank you.
Surprising how often the "good" components turn out to have originated from the same Chinese factory as the cheapo stuff. Not always but most times the cheap stuff all the prima-donnas moan about is perfectly good for us poverty-level builders. Ya soon find out what works and what doesn't through experience:)
Good Point!
I ready dont mind the Chinese or even Brazilian parts their technology has came a long way it like Darin says forge is forge it the recycled material is the problem
I agree
And by the way sweet bug
Thanks.
I hate when it's at full droop
Sounds like a personal problem? They got these blue pills for that! LOL
Time to upgrade that old girl to disk brakes 🤔
Some day!
