I think they would be extremely smart to add in control functionality via the video assist.
This one would be amazing
Only way I’ll buy one.
They'd also be very smart to make a BMPCC 6K (the s35 sensor) variant of this same camera that'd be cheaper.
@@shueibdahir if they did, that's what I would buy. The full frame movement is cool and all, but most of my lens set is s35
I would like that for the micro studio G2
Is there a start up protocol to connecting the SDI monitor to prevent from burning up the connection port?
if you use the camera as your power source, yes there is like every camera
Did they fix the terrible rolling shutter from the 6K full frame?
Awesome! Ask them if there is a possibility in the future for that front usbc to be used with hdmi monitors via an adapter. Or if they have plans ro make a usbc monitor. That would be great!
Why would you want a consumer cable with a professional camera?
@@goneloco5793 yeah agreed - usb-c would the best type of monitor to use
It's DisplayPort so an easy adapter should work for it
@@goneloco5793 because it only has one video out, which is 12g sdi, which are famous for frying if you dont follow protocol, which can happen to anyone in a rush. So having redundancy is nice. Most of us are operators and do run and gun stuff so i dont need sdi all the time if im not working with a 1st ac. Anyway, i would you NOT want redundancy?? They might come out with a usbc monitor with control capabilty and that would be awesome. For now just being able to use a plain usbc to hdmi converter will suffice for my needs.
@@jdsmediathis makes absolutely no sense. Why wouldn’t you need SDI? To each their own I guess.
a PYXIS PRO, with internal nd will be really good hahah
V mount and articulating screen maybe as well
that and higher frame rates is all I would need
Only facts here
Honestly, aside from weight, it sounds like you just want an ursa
It makes no sense to put a monitor on the side that is fixed. To change settings is gonna be difficult for run and gun
I don’t agree. the screen has to go either on the top or the left side and as a Komodo owner having it on the top I think having it on the left side would be useful at least half the time.
@@stu9000 but it could have come with a hinge so you could actually move it and it would be perfect then. Really strange decision
@@heroaomedia that wouldn’t be my preference. Keep it as compact and robust as possible.
@@stu9000 griping from the side and you accidentally change settings because its a touch screen......I have the komodo having it on top is easy to access right away and change settings, that extra step to look to the side can actually affect missing a shot
Why a monitor on the side? Lmfao just buy the bmcc6k ff at this point
This body is supposed to have an external monitor added which all previous pocket owners have. No the hdmi is gone because sdi is stronger safer and industry standard.
Id be curious to know if they plan on developing better autofocus. I used to scoff at it but since I’ve used the AF in my Komodo a bit, it’s very useful as a solo operator sometimes. Especially for cars and people walking towards the camera. I feel like it’s something they’re going to need to develop sooner or later.
New DJI lidar focus seems like something that would be perfect for this camera.
I have two questions. One is „Can we actually change the mount or not?” I’d love to get a direct yes or no from Blackmagic, as this definitely will affect my decision. Second is „Can we plug an USB-C to HDMI adapter and output an image through front usb-c?” That would be super cool
Get the l mount. That way you can adapt it to pl and ef
Ooooo yes that's a good question. Because I dont use View finders.
C to Hdmi not sure otherwise.. not a good idea without a little hdmi port.
My big curiosity questions are:
1. Are they planning to add usb video tethering to phones in an app? This would be a massive usability solution for people.
2. Are they going to add camera control to the Video Assists so they can finally control not only this camera remotely, but the micro studio camera as well?
3. Will the Ursa Viewfinder be made USB compatible with older Blackmagic cameras with USB ports like the Micro Studio Camera 4k G2? If they can do that it would be potentially game changing for many of the older cameras.
Ask if it had gyro stabilization like the pockets had.
Weird decision to have the monitor on the side and apparently NO HDMI port? Are you kidding?
This body is supposed to have an external monitor added which all previous pocket owners have. No the hdmi is gone because sdi is stronger safer and industry standard.
@@colinthomas2525 So far that is not confirmed... And all older Blackmagic camera owners did NOT have SDI as it was not an option. At least not in the pockets.. But I agree SDI is better but also most people have an HDMI monitor already and SDI version are way more expensive.
@@ekphotography hdmi is gone 100%
screen not articulated is so dumb... Ever heard of gimbal use?
mirrorless offers so much more (stabilisation, articulated display, AF, good compressed codecs... and prores raw/braw over HDMI)
And mirrorless offers so much less. No SDI, no dedicated timecode in, no dual CFExpress, no automatic proxies, no gyro stabilization, no balanced audio, usually no shutter angles, or off-speed frame rates, no internal streaming, no internal cloud support, no high capacity internal batteries, etc. Hybrids are great when you’re young,
working solo, and don’t have to squint to see the tiny flip out screen. But there comes a point where extra rigging, and a wireless transmitter for the director, and a follow focus start to come into play, at which point the hybrid limitations get in the way.
@@wavelandAlmost all of those points can be fixed with rigging, I get what you mean tho. Probably will be a big hit for filmmaking
exactly, if you're old and shooting from a tripod and take 2 hours to get 1 shot, a Pyxie is great.
Awesome, thanks so much for your great insight!
Why are hinges soooo expensive?
Camera Conspiracies 🤣🤣🤣
But honestly though.
Like, that’s literally the worst possible monitor position aside from the bottom of the camera.
That’s like “whatever you’re going to put on your own monitor anyway”
I feel like no monitor at all would literally be better than this, because it could be mounting space or buttons or even just a grip or something.
Would you ask them to please make an EF mount with slide in filters. I bet another company can do it, I just wish they would listen and make one.
what is your impression of the viewfinder?
Check with Blackmagic if the mount is interchange able?
Awesome 1st NAB video! PLEASE ask BM why they couldn't just put an articulating screen on the Pyxis?! If they can do it with the Ursa line, they could do it here. The fixed screen and no camera control from the VA (currently) kind of dooms this camera for me, to be honest...
I'm considering selling my B-Cam (A7IV) to get one of theese, but this things are the ones i'm worried:
- Lack of both HDMI OUT / SDI OUT to be able to have external monitor and video transmition
- No of .mp4 or prores recording (BRAW only is a downside for people who work as a freelance videographer and need to handle the footage to a client or agency)
- No Internal ND
- Having to rig V-Mount Battery when everyone will use it with V-Mount and not the Sony/Blackmagic batteries
Hopping that the internal things like Rolling Shutter, Low Light performance and Dynamic Range are solid.
The price is pretty solid for that range i think its a poor man Komodo/FX6
It should include the handle and a battery
Dont buy it , there is better ones available..
@@dreamsandrealms4581 any recomendations for sub u$s 3K cams, 10 or 12 bits video 6k?
@@juanmarianososa Sony FX3, BMC 6k g2, or any camera with raw output option.
Just watch specs, do comparison list on paper. Its task you need to do, not just listen those hyping youtubers.
You want your camera to be run and gun, not one trick pony with high res, but lacking usability in hard conditions like bmc cameras.
@@dreamsandrealms4581 My main camera is the FX3, but is not sub 3K dollars, y want a B cam (currently A7IV) that got same or better quality AND full frame that the FX3, but with lower price. I think that the option is the PYXIS or the FF Blackmagic Pocket 6K That in essence are the same camera. (I was considering the FX30 but is not full frame)
@@juanmarianososa General problem with BMC cameras is that they mostly not weather sealed, no flippy screen, air condition holes at bottom of camera risks entry of dirt, size, no continous autofocus option.
These are things to avoid as solo shooter or by wanting to have camera setup that is light and secure to use in harsher condition (rain, mud etc.)
My bmc 6k g2 gives ofc good quality, but still after 12 months of owning it, its very hard camera to grab and go outside take footage in variable weather condition, go into traffic. Too much to worry about with this camera.
What its good for? Studio, interviews, using tripod and using it more controlled environments where you dont have to worry too much camera not getting damaged (so personally I dont recommend it for tourism, hiking and nature videos, by watching your channel)
We can fix the ND w/ a built in ND-mount, but will we ever get Prores on the Pyxis? 99.9% of my clients want prores HQ, not raw and not super compressed h264 either....
Biggest miss of all was the non-articulating screen. Will that/can that be fixed in a potential 'pro' or mk2 version?
“Autofocus on compatible lenses” is that push-to-focus or continuous?
Push focus
Bummer
@@johnrpittenger it's still a cinema camera. I wouldn't mind paying extra for internal ND and autofocus
Please stop asking for continuous autofocus 🤣 IT'S A CINE CAM! When Arri implements continuous autofocus then you can ask blackmagic.
If that's what you want, get a FX6
@@MtZionMediaPro please stop giving companies excuses not to put autofocus on their cameras...... If you like manual focus then putting autofocus on a camera wouldn't hurt you. Don't ruin it for everybody.
That monitor would be big enough just to use as a main monitor if it wasn't stuck on the side. It looks almost 5 inches.
This is a fantastic foundation. However, there are a few omissions:
1. Top Handle or Side Handle Controls - The FX6 has a recording button at the top handle, left-side, and right-side grip handle.
Holding this camera and operating it may require you to constantly change positions.
2. Internal NDs - Huge for box cameras. Even if it was staged NDs and not electronic, it would have been great. Even at $500-$1000 more.
3. Full Size XLR.
I love what Blackmagic is doing here though.
Yes,!! Just asked Mike about holding this camera. The 6K pro was an unbalanced nightmare of a pig,!
To start, I have to say that for $3K it's a heck of a camera out of the gate. Being able to run with two handles was a good point to make. I'm guessing that Tilta and/or Kondor Blue will develop a cage that enables a left side handle to be added. Especially considering how popular I'm anticipating the PYXIS will be, a lot of rig manufacturers will probably jump at creating accessories for it.
That being said, having worked with BRAW before, the PYXIS is a camera I would be excited to own.
Why spend all that money when you can buy a Nikon Z9
Are you serious? Z9 is a mirrorless camera
Becuase a Z9 is $2,500 more, doesn't have BM RAW, and because it's a Nikon? JK 🤣 I had a Nikon F3 once, just haven't been a fan since.
yeah... cause it's a Nikon 😂
@@LukasStumpf haha. Do some research fan boys.
I‘d ask them why they removed the option to record in ProRes
Does it has 4k on the sdi...? or is still 1080p...?
Is 4k 60, is 12G SDI
No camera controls on the video assist is a huge surprise. They gotta fix that.
The VideoAssist has never provided camera control, so I’m not sure why this keeps coming up. But yes there is an opportunity for BM to offer a newVA model designed to plug into the new USB interface. Though I’m not holding my breath for a release date.
Agreed this is a HUGE fail, considering the absurd fixed screen design on the left side of the camera.
@@waveland well it keeps coming up now because in the past no one really had a reason to complain about that. The pocket screen was on the back and easily seeable and accessible by the camera op. Now its stuck on the side, so you'd have to turn the camera to see your settings if you're handheld, or go to the side of the camera if you're on sticks. So now it's a huge deal that it doesn't have controls where it wasn't before.
Ask them if they're planning on making swappable mounts with built in NDs in future. The front looks like it can be removed which is why I ask.
I want a reissue the bmpcc original
So.......is this camera still dropping this year? Blackmagic hasn't released any updates on shipping at all. :(
Mofage POCO L mount - PL VND adapter on this thing for sure
Or the Meike one for half the price.
We need them to make an EF to L mount VND adapter too
Just wish the Nisi Athena’s were comparable with them :((
Looks sick! I'm eager to see how this performs in a gimbal, like a ronin s3 or 4 pro
I’m so close to preordering both the pyxis and s4 pro I just want someone to confirm they’re both worth it lol
Would really like to know if they improved the rolling shutter!

The Monitor on the side and no HDMI are my dealbreaker... :/
Same. The side monitor removed my interest entirely.
This body is supposed to have an external monitor added which all previous pocket owners have. No the hdmi is gone because sdi is stronger safer and industry standard. This is not a hybrid mirrorless camera.
Yes, I know that. I work in the industry. I would still like to have an HDMI port for my workflow.😀😂
@@AndyAksen curious on your hdmi workflow?
Booo for still just using 5 Gbit/s USB-C. That standard (USB 3.0) is over ten years old. At least 10 Gbit/s USB-C should have been a given in 2024. And BRAW Q0 at 6k open gate 36 fps absolutely chokes on the 450-470 MB/s that are practically possible to transfer over SuperSpeed USB 3.0.
In the present there are no longer actual reasons why an USB storage implementation should be any worse or even flaky when looking at these kinds of pedestrian data rates.
Why is the screen on the side though? Surely it would be so much better if it flipped out? Really don’t understand that design
There's nothing that would have stopped them from adding a means to flip that screen out. They've been making them for years for the ursa series. The reality is a good portion of the side profile on the camera is now LCD with no way of flipping it in for transport, making it wildly vulnerable to getting hit, losing your only means of controlling the camera. The price point isn't thaaat low nowadays and puts it on par with the C70/R5C and FX3/FX6. Considering the additional value addition you get on either brand from solid autofocus and DGO from the C70- I'm left just being glad that they moved their form factor on, but not having view assist cam control from launch tells me they haven't actually been practically operating it much in testing :/
My question is about the low light capability of the camera. I own the BMPCC6k pro and I am very happy with it. How ever when the 6k full frame was released, I got one, but the lowlight capability was worse than that of the BMPCC 6k Pro. It was even so bad, that strange blue fragmentations arised, while shooting in lowlight. Even I was in love with the Image of the 6k Fullframe, I sent it back, because the lowlight performance was a dealbreaker for me. I think as an indie filmmaker, a good lowlight performance is very important because in many situations you don’t have the budget to light bigger sets, like in a street scene you shoot at night. So has BM just worked on the body or also on the lowlight performance?
Weird how they went with EF not RF though, maybe its a licensing thing i dont know, but you cant adapt any RF glass to it now which is future set by Canon, so its odd that they opted for EF, (although i own mainly EF glass still so it doesnt bother me personally. I guess you can just get L then do EF / PL. But for those who use RF glass, forget about using it with this camera i guess.
Thank you Blackmagic, thank God I don't have to listen to people complaining that the battery on this camera doesn't last long enough, or wait, now I don't want it to have a screen, so I can put two handles on it and handle it better, for God's sake, look, make your own company and make a camera that's perfect for you. Problem solved.
2:08 Blackmagic has thought of that and has added a little switch at the bottom right of the button interface to lock the screen.
Hello, ask please if it's going to be possible to output full monitor layout so we can get false colors on external monitors
Instead of placing the monitor on the side, they can just take it away, and put external monitor including adjustable arm mount in the purchase package . That way, they may even be able to reduce pyxis body
3:07 I can really recommend the PortKeys BM5 WR III as a 5“ monitor with wireless camera control options. Pretty sure it will be able to work with the PYXIS as well
Hey I'm mostly familiar with the pocket 4k and 6k. Does it still have the power port with the tiny pins that break easily? That's always been a problem with any pocket camera I've worked with at some point.
Question the screen can u move it or u got it move to the side too look all the time?
"Remember how useless and annoying it was to put no hinge on such a good screen on the BMPCC series till we finally figured out what the people wanted??? Yeah, let's not put a hinge on this screen either so we can come up with a different model next year that's practically the same camera but with hinge on the screen so people can actually use it."
The screen not folding out is a terrible oversight. This camera is a nice alternative but the pocket has already been established and other companies have done a better job with this form factor already with far more functionality.
I think an option for b/v/ gold mount would make this just a bit better
Is Battery Charging part is same as BMPCC4K & 6K?
Also every one is forgetting when the pocket line cam out it originally never had camera control it was later on then enabled. correct me if am wrong. but I remember it cam after the camera release
can you ask why they didnt go with 32bit audio and ditch all the preamps
32 bit audio typically uses a 2 level preamp system. In the case of Zoom, the second level preamp adds noise.
@@larryvaughn5843 hmm thanks I guess you would not need the input level knobs then at least?
Looks like Portkeys is going to be the best option currently for a third party monitor based camera control.
I think lack of ND makes difference a lot. They step back. The screen at the side is really weird. I will not sell my 6K Pro for a long time I suppose with such inventions.
Can the Pyxis record in prores or a very light bitrate 6k for livestream recording?
isnt it obvious to make a flip screen like old camcorders? or separate the LCD like canon
Such a terrible design lmao. Their engineers have never tried to film anything as a solo shooter
Please ask if this will this work with ATEM camera control?
Aww yeahhhh
Wondering if the L-Mount version allows usage of the EF to L mount adapter if so that would be a fantastic way to get two mounts in one camera and I think there's an ND version of the EF-L adapter as well.
It's like I want the camera but I also don't want the camera lol
Hey Mr Tobin.. My question to you is. Does the 3grand go for the camera body only or does that include the view finder and other accessories ?
Great specs! If they would’ve put in ND’s they would’ve had me sold. To me that’s the only thing missing everything else I can work around for that price point.
How many people are gonna blow out the SDI ports 😂
How do you power an external monitor without Dtap?
You should’ve asked them why they have not been able to incorporate a ‘GLOBAL SHUTTER’, in any of their Cinema Cameras. They initially considered it for the BLACKMAGIC® URSA MINI 4.2K, but eventually abandoned the thought of it, altogether. This is what every cinematographer should desire! … L E T ‘ S G O !
Why exactly?
Hey man, if you get a chance to review the Ursa Cine 12k, I’d love to see your take on it. Considering selling my red Komodo x and going back to Blackmagic after owning the red for not even two months. I should’ve waited
Working on a video! Hopefully going up tonight or tomorrow!
@@initialfocus thank you good sir! Looking forward to it
Great job on your first look! Question for BMD...Do they have any plans to bring the Blackmagic Camera App to Android?
its coming to Andriod currently in closed alpha test phase. beta may roll out soon
How’s the rolling shutter?
Any way to turn OFF that side screen to save battery?
And can Phone be used as a screen instead of viewfinder (via USB C)?
What about HDMI for external screen or do i need to get the expensive EVF?
It has SDI. Gonna need to shop for a sdi monitor.
Can the front viewfinder usb-c accommodate an hdmi-type c adapter?
Can you use the View Finder USBC port to plug in a external monitor or will it only use the ursa mini view finder?
you can use the asist with the menus..... but you can use a external monitor to wel..... see what your filming right?
Portkeys will have camera control in thier monitors im sure they shit be on point
How good is the new EVF?
This camera should have eternal NDs. Makes no sense that it doesn’t.
No it does. Going full frame and l mount while keeping the price down as much as possible. On top of the fact that the 6k pros internal nd sucks. Its the logical option to ditch it. Full frame mirrorless>>>> bad internal nd.
Thanks for asking about the Video Assist! Please push them to release a low end EVF for 500-700$. The market desperately needs options there that are not used 10 year old or bad QC like the Portkeys EVF. They should just repackage the Pocket EVF into a the same form factor like the new Cine EVF.
ZCam has you covered, as well as a PortKeys with Eyecup mod
@@CallMeRabbitzUSVI Thanks, i did know about neither! The ZCAM EVF looks like great value, but if one could mod the Portkeys into working well, that would be an ever cheaper option!
Thanks mate!
Please ask them if it has the optical lowpass filter on the Pyxis.
Yeah it has one
Does it support DJI RS3 pro combo ?
Thank you so much for this, My question is does it have a crop penalty for shooting in 4k 60fps or 24 and 30 FPS. I know it has the windowed mode for higher frame rates, but is there a crop or windowed mode in 4k. The reason why I ask is because when you shoot with the 6kpro and change to 4k, you're penalized with the the crop/windowed mode. I prefer shooting in 4k for 95% of my work and that's why I bought the bmpcc4k. I know with the new ursa there's no penalty for shooting in the lower resolutions. Anyways please let us know thank you again for everything you do.
Can you ask blackmagic design if there's any way to use their new da Vinci resolve micro Color panel with final cut pro? Is there some glue software like companion or something like that that you can remap the color wheels and dials and buttons for the color panel in fcpx? Thanks. 500 bucks is a good price for that Control surface.
It would be nice if you can ask if from the front USB, the one that goes to the EVF, could be adapted an external monitor with a USB-C to HDMI cable... some of us, if we spend this money on the camera, will not have for a monitor with SDI connectors...
Does it have timecode?
Its silly how big it is compared to a ZCAM E2-F6
A 3k budget film camera needs good auto focus so its easier to solo shoot....... Sad. I would have probably bought this and a few of my filmmaker friends. I hate are best options are to use a sony or a Canon camera.
No internal ND is such a shame.
Although it's not advertised, will the mounts be user switchable? Or is it even physically possible for them to be switched from a hardware and software position?
I with the ef and pl model had internal ND but whatever.
I'm not the biggest fan of the 6k ff sensor but it still looks like an awesome camera. I just really want to check out the ursa cine.
Comments on the viewfinder?
I can’t wait to get there!
Thanks for bringing us that super useful first look ! Great video, apart from the clickbait thumbnail 🙄
I bet if they’ll make a control monitor it’ll be totally new and use the same usbc that the viewfinder does. if that is able to receive video AND control camera, no reason that protocol can’t be used on a monitor.
I love how so many people are whining about the monitor. Where were these people with the $11k Komodo impossible to see screen? At least this has a viewable monitor on it
Another good thing about the Pyxis 6k is that it’s likely going to lower the market prices for the CC 6k.
Would love to know if/when they plan on making a super 35/APSC version
How does the body feel?
I have multiple Ursas with broken top support or stripped screws on the bottom.
