New York City is more than just Manhattan. There are four other boroughs here that are worth knowing! In this video, I share real statistics and facts on what makes each borough different using my experience living in four of them, native opinions from each borough, and actual statistics from NYC.gov.
Thank you to the natives from each borough for their insider help!

Hey, from Ireland here. Been in NYC twice, i love it so much. I love the attractions, fast phase life, diversity, food, everything! When situation will turn into a bit ok, definitely be back.
@@megmaravillas Your name sounds about as Irish as Leo Varadkar. Are you yet another foreign import?
Fun fact: I've been to brooklyn a billion times, and never heard a single person say forgetabout it. If you think people say that you might as well be a tourist or an ignorant manhattanite
I can tell you my least favorite - Staten Island.
I'm still a Manhattan guy but the location of skyscrapers in Manhattan has nothing to do with marshland (sorry!) as the foundation of all skyscrapers sits on bedrock, which is underneath all of Manhattan (and the world, really). The lack of skyscrapers between midtown and downtown is due to local law.
One interesting fact about Queens is that it has a thriving black middle class. From the mid 90s well into the 2000s black median income surpassed white incomes. Those numbers might have changed since the 2008 financial crisis unfortunately but it's still where the black middle class thrives in New York.
There is no longer a black middle class thriving in Queens. The Borough is now an over priced dump that was taken over by Asians.
St. Albains. Looks like wonder years but its BP
Because of affirmative action.
@@MANZANOADRIAN St. Albans is Beautiful and full of history and Icons.

As someone who grew up in Queens, I can attest its diversity. Some neighborhoods even has the supermarket with very ethnically diverse products to buy

Bronx-born and -bred here. The Bronx is the real deal. Growing up there prepares you for ANYTHING.
!!!!
Hahaha that’s true
As an Aussie this sounds scary to me looooool. What's the scariest things you've experienced growing up there?
Yes it does! I love the edginess of the Borough. You have many great neighborhood's, and many bad one's as well. Also many "in-between's". You have to be on point.
The mentality of the Bronx is definitely different from all the other parts of New York City. It's definitely the only borough that I've been to where you can feel Hip Hop in the air. No lie
As a Brooklynite, you forgot to mention Coney Island with its beaches, amusement parks, and especially Nathan's Famous Hot Dog stand -- where in the old days people lined up all day and into the night in snow and freezing weather to get these delicious Hot Dogs. Now they are sold in Super Markets all over the U.S. I grew up in Brooklyn when Coney Island had Steeplechase Amusement Park, the Cyclone Roller Coaster (the fastest in the world at the time) where when it took the first dive down the rail, there was air between your butt and the seat. As Archie Bunker would say, "Those were the days". I moved away from Brooklyn two years after the Brooklyn Bums (the Dodgers) moved to California.
Roy She isnt from NYC you would be better off making a video and letting people know about the true culture of Brooklyn.
She also did not add that Brooklyn was an independent city until the late 1800s, and was at one point the fourth largest city in the country. To this day, Brooklyn has its own library card, separate from the NYC library card, and still carries the general echo of it own identity. She did not add that it is also called King's County, to complement Queens. She did not mention Grand Army Plaza, or the Brooklyn Museum, Botanical Gardens, Prospect Park or the several 18th century houses that exist in Brooklyn.
@@melenatorr correct. people that are not from Brooklyn don't understand that Brooklyn isn't in the shadow of Manhatten and we don't have an underdog mentality. in this video, I saw the worst explanation of Brooklyn i have ever seen.
I wouldn't want her to mention Coney Island if she is also mentioning safety
She forgot to mention a lot. It's like she read a wiki article and then edited it for people in Florida.
Shoutout to Brooklyn and their carribean culture and their music, strange how that seems to get overlooked
Totally agree. One of my all time favorite records was the 1995 masterpiece by the Brooklyn Funk Essentials “Cool and Steady and Easy”. A delicious fusion of root’s reggae, funk and jazz, blended with Latin sounds here and there. They are still making their music in Brooklyn today. Just awesome. I am working on a record myself out of a studio in Brooklyn right now and I always feel as if I am treading in the footsteps of giants.
@@francispower1418 And let's not forget the three biggest rappers in the game, Jay-Z, Biggie and MC Lyte. A lot of famous Black people came out of Brooklyn. Spike Lee, Chris Rock,Tracy Morgan, Mike Tyson, Mark Breland and countless others..

Grew up in Queens, went to high school in the Bronx, hung out and partied in Bronx, Brooklyn & Manhattan and went through Staten Island after going over the Verrazano Bridge 😂. I've never really had a strong NY accent and I moved away years ago but I still drink cawfee
Even if I move to The Moon I'll be a New Yorker
If you do not have a strong NYC accent, then what accent do you have?
I'm from Troy (150 miles north of NYC) and we pronounce it "cawfee" as well. When I moved to Rochester , I got mocked ( although Western NY accent has a definite midwestern twang).
I hated waking up so early to go from bronx to queens to go to highschool. I woke up before the heat in the apartment building would come on and take a shower with cold water and cold air all over in the middle of the winter. 174 st.
Exactly, wherever I am, I bring New York with me.🤭🗽
@@kenmiller8467 I live in WNY and we 100% have a Midwestern twang.
As a French citizen who has never been to NYC, I was definitely not expecting this! Because of movies/series and common stereotypes, I really thought that the Bronx and Queens were the least least safest places (and by the way I have never heard of Staten Island haha) ! Therefore, thank you very much for this video which was extremely helpful and mind blowing! I am so looking forward to coming to NYC in a near future as this city intrigues me a lot but also because of your wonderful videos!
Don't let the stats scare you. Crime in most cities tends to be localized in certain areas. There's a reason Brooklyn is the second most popular borough. Don't forget to visit Brooklyn Bridge Park!
Queens is definitely safe as long as you don’t get yourself lost in Jamaica or Hollis area.
No matter where you go , you’ll never be truly safe . You have to take risks just remember that. Whether you go to a small town to a city , anything can happen
and here i am reading about paris!!! you're so lucky!
The Asian guy from Queens in this video has his own channel on UA-cam called "ActionKid" where he records himself walking through different neighborhoods around the 5 boroughs. If you want a better glimpse of the city you should take a look at his video. I'm in Queens, it's a much more quiet, laid back, and unpretentious borough despite being the birthplace of Punk Rock.
Sarah mentioned this once, but when you look at crime rates in any of the boroughs you have to remember that they are concentrated in certain neighborhoods, and even certain parts of those neighborhoods. So don't be afraid to visit!
yeap, she didn't specify that the neighborhoods that bring the rest of Brooklyn down are Brownsville, East New York and Cypress Hills
I to lived in every borough except Staten Island, though I did date a woman there. But there’s nothing like walking out of your apartment in Manhattan, if you can afford it, to be able to do anything by just walking. But the best food is in Queens IMO. But Brooklyn has cool beaches. BTW both Brooklyn and Queens are part of Long Island.
Nobody wants to live on staten so don’t blame you.
Staten Island and how there is a significant Filipino and Sri Lankan population isn't surprising. It is not too far from Edison and Woodbridge Township. There are a lot of Asians there. The bridge tolls suck imo
Queens is my favorite Borough. When I visited NYC a few years ago, I really enjoyed the time I spent in Queens more than in other parts of the city. But all of NYC is awesome!
I agree, all of NYC is awesome!
I was born in Whitestone, but raised on Long Island. I had relatives in Whitestone, Bayside, and Fresh Meadows. Even though I haven't been everywhere in the city, I have been in every borough, and in neighborhoods most people would be scared to go through.
One man in the Bronx said that gentrification hasn’t reached the Bronx yet. I say it already has! You see new luxury buildings being built in the South Bronx. The buildings look similar to the buildings on Long Island City. I’m 62 and remember that LIC was nothing but factories. Now the buildings as almost as tall as Manhattan.
For the Bronx, you left out City Island for sea food & Orchard Beach for the beach (so you don't have to go all the way to Jones Beach, Rockaways or Coney Island).
As a native New Yorker, I really enjoyed this video & the wonderful breakdown of each borough.
Thank you for taking the time to do your research & share with us.... that's lots of work I'm sure.
God Bless you.
I was nervous about the "fast pace" and stories of rudeness but when we made it there I realised that Manhattan pace is our normal and the people were incredibly friendly. I think that reputation is just compared the the rest of the US but its really similar pace to city life in NZ.
I am a Kiwi. I hope to see NY some day soon. I am amazed to see that there are a number of Kiwis in NY. That is cool.
What do you really mean when you say fast pace
@@Dp-to5xb It don't mean nothing. Just a silly stereotype from movies.
Sarah: The thing that Staten Island is most known for is...

Thank 👏🏼 You 👏🏼 for highlighting all the good things about the Bronx. I can't say how many times other NYers from other boroughs would even repeat stereotypes to me like they ain't from the same city 😑

Edgar Allan Poe who purchased a cottage (which still stands today), in what is now the Fordham Road area, and spent some of his last year's. He loved the Bronx. Lot's of famous "world shaker's" from this Borough.

Queens also has the largest South American population (amongst Hispanics) of all NYC. Most other boroughs have Puerto Ricans and Dominicans as the largest Hispanic groups.

My family lived on Staten Island for around 200 years. I grew up on the waterfront in TOTTENVILLE, either the first or last town in NY State in the house my great grandfather built in the 19 th century. It was laid back and safe and rather like a New England village. I now live in a little village in Maine, which is not unlike TOTTENVILLE 75 years ago.
I love to ride my bike from Grasmere to Tottenville, something I started doing quite foten during the pandemic (I just did it on Thanksgiving Day again). I used to commute to Midtown Manhattan by bike via the ferry, but then I started working remotely, so to continue getting my exercies, I try to get in some long bike rides, and my favorite is pedaling the length of Richmond/Amboy until I reach the water and then up Hylan (or I do the route in reverse). I also like to do an Alice Austen House to Conference House ride.
On my bike rides to Tottenville, I pass the Bethel Church, which has graves going quite aways back. If your family lived in Tottenville, were any of your ancestors buried there?

One thing to note about Queens is that there is a vast difference between Eastern and Western Queens. I grew up in Astoria which is literally 10 minutes to the East Side and Midtown Manhattan whereas eastern Queens, bordering on Nassau county, Long Island, can almost be considered suburban.

I’ve lived in NY (Long Island) for my whole life and not only have I only been to the city in general only 6 times.....but the only tourist attractions that I’ve ever been to are Times Square, 9/11 memorial, Radio City music hall for the Rockettes, and Washington Square Park. I’ve also never been upstate before, so I’m pretty much a tourist in my own home state.
I suggest you get off the rock occasionally. A lot of Long Islanders (of which I am one) seem to have the same experience. I used to go to the city a few times a year to take my kids to museums and shows - and we frequently went on trips upstate and to PA and many other places. I can understand the aversion to the trip if you live way out on the East End... it's a pain for me to schlep in from mid-Suffolk... but it's worth it. I'm jonesing now to go someplace but don't want to deal with the hassle of quarantine.

@@joebrown9895 Yeah... but I’ve never made it past Foxwoods.. and even that I took the ferry from Orient over for. No way I’m sitting in 95 traffic that long. You want long? Try South Dakota... and I only did from Pierre to Rapid City... I flew in there from MSP. At least on the East Coast you never really get that desolation. Actually, it’s worse from from Vegas/Hoover Dam up to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Lots and lots of desert. First time I ever saw the outside temp on the car’s thermometer go over 120 and stay there.
@@nkley1 I agree. I'm a New Yorker living in Florida. My best vacation were Wednesday went I toured the city. I even took the Bus tour of Manhattan. The more you see , the more you enjoy with NYC. Now I depend on ActionKid, Be Barr, Sarah and other wonderful tour guides to keep me in touch. Plus I try to get there when I can.
loved the video minus the fashion breakup...different communities of ppl wear different styles of clothes as per their income irrespective of the borough. I find it is very weird to generalise especially today when ppl just wear anything
Thank you. Was also looking for this comment
That is true. She could have just spoke about her own personal style.
Thank you SO much for making this. I'm from a tiny copper mining town in AZ and now live in Lost Angeles and do not comprehend NY.
Harriet's Rooftop Bar had a spectacular view and not nearly as crowded as top of other tall buildings. Great tip! Thanks!
You're so welcome! Glad you enjoyed Harriet's!
If I'm talking to someone not from NY, I love all the boroughs. If I'm talking to other native New Yorkers...Queens. No debate lol. Fr I love how much we rep our boroughs.
yep. bronx born/manhattan by choice and it's very obvious that queens is the "best." not my personal favorite, but truly the all around nicest place to live/best food/most down to earth. nothing to dislike!
Why are there so many beautiful women in the comments section?
😂 Never!!
Queens def for its good food and diversity!
I am from Brooklyn, and I enjoyed this video because I always wondered about the differences between each borough.
Thank you for this video.
Since the movie “ The Warriors “, I have a fascination for all New York.
Staten Island looks beautiful, but I'm dying to see Manhattan.
It blows my mind how big NYC, not just in area and population, but the number of skyscrapers etc. Like Manhattan is 10 miles long and is basically NYC's Downtown, even if the technical downtown is at the bottom of the island.
I recently visited NY and was thinking the EXACT same thing. It's humongous. Land mass and population. I'm fascinated by it's geography.
Meskipun belum pernah ke NYC, tapi dengan menonton video ini seakan- akan jalan-jalan ke sana. Thanks Sarah...
Brooklyn! Anything Brooklyn I Love! 💙💙💙 more power to your channel!
