That GTI build was pretty much my "realistic dream build" for many years.. I wanted a MkII, VR6, AWD, turbo and a stick... Though, now, 20 years later, I'd be curious about how this set-up might benefit from a DSG or something. Of course I love manual transmissions, and rowing your own gears through a traditional H-pattern box adds to the whole experience of interacting with and controlling the engine/transmission.. Makes you feel more connected to the act of driving, and, well, blah blah blah, you've heard it all before. But before these two cars even pulled up to the line, I knew the Corvette was likely going to win, and that it would come down to the gear shifts. The dual-clutch in the Z06 shifts gears in less than 100 milliseconds, and it does it on its own, with absolutely no effort from the driver required... which means consistency and reliability, shift after shift. Again, i'd love to see them run this race back after the VW got a modern DCT or even a sequential box... Something tells me it would more than make up for the margin by which it lost to the Z06 in these races... Definitely not the smallest engine ever fitted to a Corvette. The C1s came with a 235ci inline-6, as well as 265ci and 283ci and 327ci V8s, and the C4s came with 305ci V8s.
You are 100% correct! First gen came with the blue flame 6 and the gen 2 had 327 and gen 3 California edition came with a 305. You piss excellence sir!
Just a typical Corvette owner, spouting facts they know nothing about. Surprise he didn’t say it was one of one that was made on Thursday of a week they only work three days.
Well if we quote him correctly instead of lying he actually said “this is probably the smallest motor i think thats been in any corvettes that i know of” He clearly qualified it enough times to show he isnt aware of every engine ever put in every singlecorvette ever. He is just saying from the ones he knows about, its the smallest. The point being its small. Smaller than what he is used to(being in a corvette).
Thinking the third gear issue is a short shifter. As crap as the OE linkage feels, you can just push 3rd and it'll go. It'll grind as you beat the syncros, but it won't lock you out. Had another MK3 with a B&M shifter and it constantly locked me out fast shifting into 3rd
I built a 260hp 1.4 VW Polo bored out to 2l with Garrett T3/4 turbo as a daily driver, thrashed it daily and it is still going with the new owner. Third gear on these older cars are a problem and known for jumping out of gear. P.S. my gearbox was rebuilt with a longer 5th gear for a good 165mph (actual speed) and never had the 3rd gear issue, but did have one of the other issues and sticky 1st to 2nd change when the gearbox was cold.
Great race…definitely didn’t think it would be that good… the fact that he kept the VW around 600hp and not 1200 so he didn’t split the motor in half or brake axles was very respectable. Great race and he is driving it onto the trailer. Definitely a good day.

I would say that those shift cables on that cable shift gearbox were tired/ stretched or the bushings where they attached to the gearbox could also be a bit tired. The old school rod shift gearboxes with new bushes and shift ball are more direct and way easier to get gears.
Yeah, his hand technique didn’t help either (fun little flare on the release, not so positive though) and who knows about the timing on the clutch either. As a VW guy that always hated the cable vs linkage shifters (unless a stock car) there are options to buy some impressive, custom hardware with very impressive cables from CAE. It’s hard to get solid linkage feel from cables and the VW stuff is mushy anyway, but these do the trick. Back when I was into Eclipse GSX’s though I’d never bet on someone with the AWD GSX vs a FWD GST automatically because a lot of AWD dudes couldn’t launch either and BOGGED so hard between every other shift it wasn’t an automatic win. These shifts reminded of the worst of them.
