During the winter I put my trees in the garage. I leave the garage door open to give the trees access to sunlight. If the night time temps are not going to be cold enough to produce frost or freeze, I move the trees outside. Once the weather changes so that the temps are safe at night, I move them outside for the remainder of the season.

Hello there! :D I'm in highschool and I decided last month to plant an orange tree so I bought an orange, took out the seed, put sobe coffee grounds in the soil I had from a pot of a tiny flower I threw away because theoretically I needed the flower for school's garden but never actually got to plant it so I thought let's reuse the pot and soil. And for a month I just waited and waited, didn't water at all because the pot was extremely heavy with water since I bought it, and I thought it'll never sprout but now it is a healthy green baby sprout I named him Josh and he's 2 cm tall! :3 and I hope he'll grow up to be a big orange tree

Thanks as always for the great content! I have a question. I recently bought a Cara Cara Naval Orange tree. It's currently in a 5 gallon pot it came in. Do you think that variety is too big for a pot? I'm conflicted whether to plant it or put in a large pot. Zone 9a in Maricopa.

It could grow in a large container for a year or two - at that point you need to take it out and trim the roots and trim back the plant a bit and replace the soil.

This is my first attempt with potted citrus. I have a grapefruit and a lemon. There is so much conflicting info regarding the size of the container. 🤔 bump up one inch from nursery pot, bump up 2-3 sizes or as you indicate transplant into a permanent large container in the beginning. I just don't know what to do. Help please.

I have a decent amount of space but not a substantial amount in my yard, but I plant a lot of my stuff in containers due to the fact that I don’t know if I want it to be permanently be placed where it is or how it’ll look in the future. Plus I’m still renovating my yard so I don’t want to have to take the time out to dig it up and plant it again. Planting tree like plants I prefer to do it this way in comparison to flower like plants which are easier in comparison. Also I don’t always know how big it’ll get so keeping it in a container is more of a safe bet.

I fear I might have made a mistake. Thank you and love your advice in the video.

I'm from Finland (Northern Europe). When I was on 7th grade, I planted my very first lemon and ruby grapefruit trees from seeds. I took a good care of them. They grew over half a meter tall. But before I went to culinary school, I lost my passion for growing them. Now over 14 years later, I've been having a slow growing passion to start from stratch again. I was so excited when my lemon and grapefruit sprouted. 🍋🍊 Maybe it's time for a round 2.

@@GrowingInTheGarden Thanks for the reply and the info. Unfortunately due to our cold climate, there's not gardening stores here in Finland that are selling citrus transplants of any kind. Only thing I've seen is a dwarf decor citrus containing non-edible fruits. I'd love to get my hands on Citrus limon. So I guess I have no choice but to grow one from a seed. I liked the process anyways. 🙂

Hello. Is it advised to use the biggest pot available even for young citrus trees or it’s better to choose a smaller pot and let the citrus tree grow in it for a few years and then pot up? For example I bought a fairly small dwarf variety orange tree and now I’m trying to decide whether to pot it in a 15” terracotta pot I have, or go with a bigger one like 22” pot?
I’ve heard that choosing a container that is too big may create problems with watering. Even the local grower says to start with a smaller pot. I’m in Northern California, zone 9b, for what it’s worth.

    • @GrowingInTheGarden

Perfect timing! I’m about to pot up a variegated lemon I found at Costco here in Phoenix. Thank you for consistently providing great garden content :)

I have not had success growing citrus ar all. Can you tell me why they suddenly drop healthy leaves, then the tips turn brown and the plant dies all the way back? It happens very quickly, and I have not changed my routine. I'm about to give up. They're inside, in front of a south window. Any info will be most appreciated because I am stumped. Thanks.

May not be enough light indoors.

@@GrowingInTheGarden Thanks for the reply! They get direct sun through the windows for about 7 hours but I will rig up a light.

I want a cara cara orange so much. A container gives me the option to plop it right over my main water line without fear of roots. Thanks for this video!

I have really struggled with citrus in our Arizona soil. This video couldn’t have come at a better time. Great tips, thanks!
