On my daughter's former horse farm, she had a huge mountain of compost from cleaning stalls and pastures. It formed a high Hill and there was a smoldering fire in it at it's center. There was a fox that built her den on the back side where she and her kits stayed toasty warm throughout the northern New York state winters. They would come out and hunt and play in the snow and return to their heated den afterward. Nature's way is remarkable.

    Compost Bins
Years ago a friend and I built a extra large compost bin out of Center Blocks. It was in the shape of a large E except it had 3 bins with a slide wood front. You start compost in first bin, after full move it to second bin. You start another in first bin, after full. You move second bin into third bin, first into second bin, start another in the first bin. If I can remember this set up would make a ton of compost or more a year. This was back in the early 1980's. She never ran out of compost to be honest we had a blast making it. Lots of laughs! Her husband couldn't believe we did it! It looked so good.
When we started talking about it was a picture in a book. She ask me if I thought we could build it. I said yes. Her next question was do you think we can put the blocks in her station wagon. I said no we would have 4 flat tires! Her husband came out from behind news paper and said What are you two girls up to?
We show him the picture. He said no
You need a load of sand, and have them deliver the blocks and some stakes too. He look at us and said are sure you two can build this? We said yes! He came home for lunch to see our work. We even put in a track with wood in front of each end of the E so you could slide boards in and out so it would make it easier to get compost out. I can tell you we had so much fun making this compost center it was big. This thing never stops making compost. It lasted for years until she became a senior had to move. She had 5 acres with a 5,000 sg. ft ranch house so we had to make it nice. Oh the memories!!!

You have a tractor with a bucket and plenty of land you don't need a container. Put it all in a good size pile that you can roll back and forth with your tractor. The secret to a compost pile is turning it over often. So use your tractor and roll it over once to the south then next week roll it over once back to the north. I like piles that are 4-5 ft. tall. pile in a roll. Roll it like a cylinder.

Keep it simple with compost is great but you do need to put some browns with moodys paddies or you will just get slop. Fall leaves will work great. Plus I would make you compost stalls a bit wider so you can get the tractor in there to turn the compost.

I love how you used the T-Post on the Pallet Compost Bin. I used electrical ties on mine at my former farmett. (I now live at an Independent Senior Citizens Facility) and cannot garden any longer 😥
After watching a man on a TV Gardening Show many years ago, that's where I got the idea of the Pallet Compost Center. He made 3 bins. Put everything into bin 1. When it was full, he transferred it to Bin 2. He again filled Bin 1. When it was full he transferred Bin 2 to Bin 3, and Bin 1 to Bin 2. Bin 3 was ready made compost for the garden. Anything not composed was tossed back into Bin 1 to start the cycle all over again.
I also had a wooden frame with hardware cloth on it my late husband had made for me many years ago to rinse dirty vegetables on before taking them indoors. I put that on top of a wheel barrel, sifted the compost out of Bin 3 to get the big things out. I loved the system

Jason, how about just moving the compost bin a little farther from Moody's fence so you have room to get your riding mower/Little O, or even Big O and the bushhog, between the compost bin and the fence. Also, if you put a concrete block under each corner of the compost bin it's a snap to weed eat around it.

Mooman is worth his weight in manure gold. Cows can be very affectionate. Mooody is no exception. All animals want is kindness and they return it a ten fold. As for the compost, I’d just consider how I’m going to spend most of my time. Filling it or emptying it. The higher time value area, gets the compost.

My father kept it simple to all our farm in terms of his compost. He had a mound on the backside of the barn that he piled high and he actually used a manure spreader to get it over there and he didn’t have it compiled in a compost bin it just was a big mound and then he covered it with straw to keep if I’m getting dried out too fast, and us kids, not knowing what it was, Would jump from the hay loft, Down on top of the smaller mountain as we saw it ... NEVER EVEN HAVING A CLUE WHAT WAS UNDER THE STRAW!!! Several years later my cousins are over and of course we went to the barn and we weren’t supposed to be in there, that’s for sure!,& We began jumping out onto the compost pile again, still covered with straw. That happened to be the day that my father decided to work in the watermelon patch and potato patch just up on the hill close to the barn, and he saw us Jumping! Boy! were we in trouble!!!
So we taught us a lesson and cousins and all of the kids Amazon, had to get pitchforks in buckets and scoop manure all the way out to his watermelon and potato patch and help him spread oh that manure which reeked such a horrible smell!!We never jumped on it again that manure pile but we sure benefited from the best produce you could ever get and never buy because my Dad truly grew the best gardens❣️❣️❣️
You keep doing your compost pile the way you want to and it’ll turn out just fine!! Mother nature will help you and if you want through a little straw on top LOL😊❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️ just love your show and I love that you talk to the animals Jason!! YOU HAVE SUCH GOOD HEART❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️

Have you thought of planting some nut trees and fruit trees in the animal pens? Of course they'd have to be fenced in til they were strong enough to handle an animal scratching and chewing on them. But not only would you benefit from the fruits, so would the animals. And eventually shade for them. Or just any trees.

For me at the bottom to keep the hot manure from being right agains the wood I put a line of concrete blocks at the bottom and I make the entrance to the compost pile as large as my bucket on the kubota. • @gelwood99
    @gelwood99 2 роки тому +5

Make sure you are buying clean hay that has had no "roundup" type stuff sprayed on it because cows and horses do to break it down during digesting and it will still act as an herbicide on whatever you use it on. With all the tons of manure Moody will be giving you those bins will fill up faster than you think so you will need a place to pile more up somewhere. The tractor bucket would speed the breaking down simply by turning it more often. We used the T-post pallet method for our bins but they were too narrow for the tractor bucket to fit in and it filled up with tree roots faster than I could manually turn it to keep them out.

    • @christinedehn3257

Yes. You have the tractor. Use it. Also since you don't have the garden beds established yet, Place the bins in the middle of the garden site. Leachate will go where it will do some good. Once it has started breaking down pull the pallets, put the chickens in electric netting around the area and let them spread it for you.

Lumnah Acres made some large compost bins. They took a length of fencing and circled it around- wide enough that the tractor bucket fits over the top. Then the scraps, poo etc. go into the bucket as they clean. Then they dump it all inside the wire ring. When they need turn it, they just remove the ring.

You will have enough plant and other materials to do a dozen piles like this. Mine is 8 by 6 and cycles about twice a year. Make it MC's job and she will grow into an athlete.

Moody sure is curious about everything you do. You can really tell he's happy with you. Have your tried putting on his halter yet, or are you going to find one that will fit him and just leave it on? Thanks for the videos, I'm really glad I found cog hill. I like how you treat your animals

I love your T-shirts and I love black cats🐈‍⬛. How about Pink and Tucker on their own clothing and accessory line? Love from the mountain top in middle Tennessee, Fran

A friend of the family gave us a 50-gallon tub...we put our cow manure into feed grain bags, put two of the grain bags into the tub, and loaded it with water...left it all for 1 week, stirring occasionally...>>> GARDEN TEA RATIO>>>> 0ne gallon h2o to 1/2 cup of Garden Tea...veggies were so strong garden plants were so green...used on landscape area as well...multi-purpose use, no burning, just wanted to pass that along to you...Cheers from Maine.

Jason I like your idea about building the compost area. You might want to eliminate the middle divider so you could get the tractor bucket into it.

SUGGESTION: You might consider making your composting system large enough to be able to use your tractor bucket to manage the compost.

Great idea to use the pallets for the compost. I would build a series of 3 bins side by side all in a row attached. That way you can put the cow paddies in one, along with some straw. then as it breaks down you move it into the second bin and then into the third bin. By the time it gets to the third bin it will be ready to use in the garden.

Three sided compost area allows you to turn it with a pitchfork...my dad used to add lime, sprinkled on top, to sweeten the compost and control smell...he just had a mulch pile ...best garden compost and gigantic worms for fishing ! He really never fussed with it...mother nature is great.

Make a table, using pallet wood, to wash your feeders/waterers, easier on your backs. Can make a station as elaborate as you want; shelves, sink, drain/water collection, whatever

Cow compost is great for the gardens. When we had two cows we put or cow dung in a 3 sided compost along with our chicken pen clean out . The heat from the chicken doo helped it all break down quicker. Love your good care of your Animals.

Yes, greens, browns, & poo a little water sprinkled on each layer as its added and covered in a black tarp. Turn every 4 days in 30 days you have black gold.
Greens & browns can be up to 4 inches thick, but manure should be 1 cow patty thick (about 2 inches). Wetting down each layer as you go. Then use the tractor bucket and lift from the outer edge placing in the center of the new pile, sprinkle each bucket load on top when done moving pile over cover with black tarp. We don't use pallets to contain the manure easier to turn it without all the work. And pallets just look messy in my opinion. Just poop & grass, garden waste, leaves (very thin layers of mulched leaves), chicken litter & poo (we used wood shavings), straw, kitchen scraps all can go into the pile.
Some kitchen scraps & shredded mail can be put into the worm bin, you can also sprinkle in some corn meal. The worms love it.

I love the respect you have for Mr.Moody! Not referring to him as a doofus or big galoot.
He's a big boy and such a sweetheart.
One of my girlfriends has a steer named Moo man. He is wonderful and the local brewery has a beer named after him. Moo man ale!
She gets the spent grains from them and her animals love them. Maybe if you guys have a local brewery you could ask about their spent grains as well!

You might want to look into making a scratching post/cow brush for Moody. You can buy the expensive commercial ones (like on a dairy farm), but there are also ways to make your own. It could save a few of your fences if he has something to run against. Also, I wondered if you were moving the pigs around the garden area to get it ready for planting? I know you talked about doing that, but we haven't seen them in a while.

I just love Moody - I'm more of the cow person than a horse person. Thanks for showing the worms - I had wondered if they stayed put or came with. I doubt if you'll get a lot of cow patties - more than you need - but that could be your side gig - selling manure. Give Moody some lovin' from this old hillbilly in WV.

I was at a zoo one day. I noticed that all of the horses used the bathroom in one area of their pen. I asked the zookeeper how did you train your horses to do that? I had four horses before and they used the bathroom all over the place. She told me that they put wood chips in one area. Once the animals use the bathroom in that area, they notice that their pee does not splash back on them. They start using the bathroom in that area only. I do not have animals now, but when I do again, I will try it.
