      I don’t get the allure of their very popular sandal. Every single shoe manufacturer seems to have a knock off and I think they’re truly unattractive. And..I was just in Istanbul where knock off purses are for sale on every single corner in every price range and of various quality levels. Embarrassed to admit I almost bought the “master” knock off Kelly bag for $1200. Went back to my hotel and even did a deep dive on how to spot dupes down to the printed logo, hardware, and knobs on the bottom. Didn’t buy it.

    I can’t understand why people would want anything from a brand who clearly do not want them as a customer. It’s like trying desperately to be friends with someone who doesn’t want to know because you embarrass them or something. Yet people are desperate to be seen to “fit in” or “to achieved it”. It just screams the ultimate in materialism and insecurity to me and these type of brands are having the last laugh.

    Personally, I don’t care about this specific issue, and I think there is a legal line being crossed which is what the suit is about, not someone just crying “unfair”. Outside of the legal issue, there is another perspective….you are blessed with the personality to reach out and form relationships easily, so you think that is a price you are willing to pay - actually it isn’t a price, but how you are. Some of us are not as socially outgoing and don’t form relationships during business transactions. We can be cordial/courteous, but requiring you to develop a relationship to get something feels a little icky. As women, who historically always had to smile, and be sweet to get what we need from our fathers, our bosses, our husbands (which has/is changing)- it doesn’t feel right that there is a “good relationship” requirement to completing a business transaction.

  • @meditasjon1

    I do not care about that lawsuit.- However,- I am kind of surpriced that people still want to buy Hermes bags. Everybody has one, (or ten). I love that Hermes is a family-owned business, that the bags are handmade and so on.- But they have become what I call a uniform. There are so many pretty bags out there to buy ( and for far less money too ) .

    In another video I recall you ranting about not having the chance to form a relationship with Hermes sales people...I personally think they are full of themselves and the exclusivity is off putting. I guess it's a double edged sword bc the exclusivity is what makes it valuable and have resale value, but at the end of the day it's just a bag to put things in and is not important in relation to the more meaningful things in life. I have many luxurious items, and it amazes me how I just gravitate toward my favorite few and the rest is just an obscene waste of money that would be better put to use in other ways.

  • @MariaT3

    Sure, I'll throw my 2 cents in. I have my fair share of luxury and status items. I like to shop. I like pretty things. However, I am extremely shy. I would not be able to play the Hermes game even if I wanted to. And thankfully I don't want to. I am not going to put myself in the position of being intimidated by salespeople in a store. When I shop I'm usually ready to buy. If something is not in stock, they will order it for me. Easy and pleasant.

    I think the issue is--they are openly discriminating against people they deem unworthy of owning their product....I personally would not support a brand that treats their customers poorly, anyone should be able to walk into a store and be made welcome.....I think it is appalling to make people so uncomfortable they just leave. so perhaps unfair is the wrong word, I have wanted items and found out it was sold out, I didn't think it was unfair, I just was too slow, no problem, lesson learned, but to be interested in buying something and sales clerks refuse to look at you, behave with obvious distaste toward you is just awful behavior. this does not creat more desire, at least not for me, I will gladly spend my money else where, I own a million dollar home on the ocean that is paid for, drive a sports car, and I try to be courteous to everyone I encounter.

      No, it's more like they are reserving the bags for their priority clientele who spend a lot, their best customers. The bags are for the rich who spend a lot anyway and $50,000 to them is like $2,000 to someone else. It is fair. It's a luxury item. They have plenty of rich customers and only so many bags.

    • @jeanniefenton5405
      @jeanniefenton5405 2 місяці тому

      @@lisapolanski9379 I will have to respectfully disagree here, the reason select people have bought a lot from them, is because they have allowed them to buy, while others are not waited on, told it is not in stock, and so on. in order to create an "exclusive" environment, you must exclude select individuals. this is just a very negative environment, guaranteed to hurt feelings, and make some feel they don't belong/or not good enough. why would anyone want that?

  • @jenniferroyston3989
    @jenniferroyston3989 2 місяці тому +92

    It’s not about being “unfair”. There is an actual law at the center of this discussion. It will be someone’s job to interpret the law and to determine if Hermes is liable.

    • @makeuplover6852
      @makeuplover6852 2 місяці тому +21

      Agreed. This case is not complex really. It is a very well known, never been kept secret fact that if you would like the opportunity to ever be offered a "quota bag" which varies from sales associate (SA) to SA but always includes the Birkin and Kelly in all their various sizes, you will HAVE to spend a considerable sum of money on other items the brand has to offer. This sum of money changes once again from SA to SA, there seems to be no rhyme nor reason to how much one might be required to spend and in some cases the customer is told point blank, " you will need to spend $30,000 in home goods before being offered, or it could be in jewelry, or in ready to wear clothing. This variable changes drastically from SA to SA, from city to city, Country to Country, literally zero rhyme nor reason to this whole process. It has been like this for a very very long time and customers have just come to except this is the way this company does business, if you want a shot at buying one of these highly coveted bags you will play their game. Until customers began to get shafted over and over and over again. Customer were told by managers that if they spent $70,000 in another department, not bags they would be offered their dream bag, their top choice or pick between the Birkin and Kelly line. So Customers did just that, then waited and waited and waited and no offer came to buy either the Birkin or Kelly bag. It happens so often that finally a couple customer finally had enough, and good for them. This is absolutely not about Hermes operating "fairly" this is about Hermes operating within the laws in which they sign up to operate within when they set up show in any Country and within the State that the store operates in. Hermes stance is simply that this is not their policy but there are thousands of customers around the world who could line up for ten months long and tell a judge that this is in fact EXACTLY what they had to do in order to be offered a bag. This practice of trying to persuade people to spend money on something else so that you will offer them a different product and then to not come through on that promise is basically the crux of this law suit. I am very much a "life isn't fair" kinda person and hey if a company wants to keep the demand SUPER high by having such an extremely tight grip on their supply chain, that is 100% their prerogative to do so, but what they should not be allowed to continue to get away with is lying to customers getting customers to spend millions (collectively) just so that they might get an opportunity to be offered a Birkin or Kelly. I suspect these women who are bringing the lawsuit likely have recordings of being told by an SA or even a manager that they have to spend a certain amount in order to get offered a bag. On CA where this lawsuit is filed it is legal to record someone without their permission. The first two plaintiffs are asking for others to step up and join the class action suit and I suspect that others will who are fed up with having the carrot dangled in front of them for so long have spent so much money on other things as asked by their SA only to still have no offer to purchase a Birkin or a Kelly. This case could completely change the way Hermes operates, as it should. Its absolutely their prerogative to limit the supply of their merchandise and they can choose to sell to whom ever they please but the practice of SA's and Managers telling customers how much they have to spend and on which items in order to be offered a bag, absolutely should come to an end.

      @@makeuplover6852 I wonder what kind of commission these sales associates are bringing in? It sounds like a real problem if that’s where it leads, I mean what if the house of Hermes says we don’t require a determined amount to be spent on items before the allowance of a bag is considered. I wonder what will happen? I’m sure they will have to deal with it and take the hit if anything comes of it. I wouldn’t know I’m the salt of the earth Nordstrom girl. 😂

    • @sandraferguson2774
      @sandraferguson2774 Місяць тому

      @@makeuplover6852 do these sales associates make a commission off every sale? Not sure about in the US but in Canada the SAs make a commission. In high end stores they rely on their commissions for their paycheques because they work strictly on commission. I’ve heard of some SAs working at high end cosmetic counters and they can make close to $80,000 - $100,000 a year. And that’s just for cosmetics. So for an SA working at Hermes, if they work on commission no wonder they keep stringing these customers along and keep telling them they have to spend more money. It’s just putting money in their own pockets.

I feel good when I get a good buy. I’m just not interested in spending thousands of dollars on a bag or shoes or anything really. It just isn’t a thing for me. I’m not against other people who prefer name brands and designer items. My issue is that it appears that the acquisition of the bag is conditional upon the unspoken/undocumented/quid pro quo assumption that you must spend $20,000 before qualifying for a $20,000 handbag. If the company stated "In order to qualify for a Birkin Bag, you must spend X amount of money." There. It's documented. How do we know that the sales associate isn't just taking you for the commission leading you to believe that you'll "move up the list" faster. It's about unlawful practice. Thanks for your videos!

    When people say "that's unfair!", I think about an old story. A farming family who had no material wealth had a son who was working with them to harvest crops. He broke his leg and was not able to help. Everyone lamented this horrible fate. Couple weeks later an army came by looking for young people to take to war. Because the son had a broken leg he was not able to go to war and the family rejoiced And were grateful for the son's broken leg. I'm sure when you look back on it Lisa, you are glad that first marriage ended so you could have the marriage you have now. This is what I think about when something disappointing happens. I don't know what's coming around the corner, but I know I will always be taken care of the way I always have.

    This whole thing shows that luxury fashion has jumped the shark. If Hermes wants to screen who is buying let them. I have several Hermes scarves and belts all purchased in France at a boutique from snooty sales staff, and I do love them, but this whole discussion has me wondering if I am now going to be branded a fool for owning this brand and looked upon as trying too hard to be in some kind of exclusive club instead of buying it because it's beautiful and the workmanship is exquisite. Hermes has literally lost the thread.

I went through a horrible divorce in my late 50's and lost my retirement and my beautiful retirement home in Georgia. It was sad and I thought it was unfair in the beginning. But then, I was able to move to a beautiful rural area in Oregon and I met the man of my dreams and we were married....and, and, and. I am so thankful I ended up here. I think the point some people are missing here is that it has nothing to do at all really about building a relationship with an employee. The issue is a company has for sale the merchandise a person wants and can afford but that person is instead, as part of a business plan to drive up sales and brand image, tricked/forced/manipulated into buying a whole bunch of other crap first as a prerequisite to ever someday maybe possibly if they are lucky and special enough to be chosen to get eventually the thing they could have/should have been sold in the first place because it was in fact always available. It's basic fraud. A perpetual scam being hidden behind an elitist facade. Not really all that different than saying you might be able to have a million dollars but in order to get your million dollars you must first wire me varying amounts of lots and lots of money over the next 10 years and then maybe if I like you just maybe eventually there might be a million dollars to give you, but even then you're going to have to wire me three million to get it. Not exactly the same but you get the idea. A scam is a scam is a scam and that's without even addressing the market manipulation to fraudulently drive the prices up.

    I have a little bitter taste w/Hermes. We travel everywhere and have spent gobs of money, time, etc. in Hermes. We have bought bags, belts, scarves, bracelets… you name it. We have asked for a Birkin each and every time and “none in stock” but was never told how to achieve one. What I have realized is that you have to use the same “sales associate” and build a rapport with them and buy through them solely… as to create a rapport and relationship with them to be granted… a Birkin. Well, that does not sit well with us as we should be considered “tenured” customers…. But we buy in FL, we buy in France, we buy all over the world and still we are treated as if we have just come in as a first time customer. It has turned me off to trying to get one through the store. If my time, effort and money at this point does nothing- second hand is just fine w/me.

    All the over the top prestige products remind of the Dr Seus book "The Star Bellied Sneeches" Brand logos are basic psychology and human nature. Create an atmosphere of exclusivity and that creates desire. Hermes is the ultimate star on and star off machine. I will never support brands that makes everyday people feel unimportant or wait in line for entry into a store. I have no judgment for anyone who does, we all choose to spend our money in different ways, and there is no one "right" way to spend money. We all spend; in what another may judge as frivolous or unnecessary. Do I need another foundation, no, do I want one yes Lisa I always enjoy your opinion and subscribers as well😀

    I think we need to be careful about being complacent about we just not worry about things being unfair. Sometimes it can be a big deal that things are unfair. People can prejudice and discriminatory on all levels(race, age, sex, etc.). I even had a situation where I felt my daughter’s coach was being unfair and was favoring certain players. After a discussion with the school athletic director, we found out that we weren’t the only parents that felt that way. In the end something was done about it. I’m so glad we stood up for our daughter and said this is not fair! If we hadn’t done so we would have not known that we weren’t alone and change would not have happened. Also, many years back, Oprah was not allowed to shop at a certain high end store. I don’t remember if it was Hermes or not. That wasn’t fair and cause for alarm if they wouldn’t let someone as widely known as Oprah to shop at that particular store. Just my thoughts. Thank you. 😊

    • @makeuplover6852
      @makeuplover6852 2 місяці тому +5

      Agreed :) this is not really about being fair, Hermes is actually operating outside the law, in my opinion and the opinion of many others and the people have brought the class action suit against Hermes. Hermes employees tell customers they have to spend a certain amount (lets say $30,000) on OTHER things in the store before they will be offered a Birkin or Kelly bag which are the two bags Hermes keeps VERY tight control over how many they sell in essence they keep the demand for these bags extremely high by keeping the supply chain extremely tightly controlled. What prompted the law suits is this happens all the time but also what happens is then there is no fulfillment on that promise of offering these bags to the consumer.
      In one case I read about a woman was told my a Hermes Manager that she had to spend $70,000 in a special event they were hosting, if she did she would be offered a bag, she did as she was asked...she was never offered the bag. It then became this game of continuing to move the goal posts on the customer and it was, oh you just have to spend another $25k in homegoods, and so on.
      This practice has gone on for a few decades, customers now are fed up, and they all also carry with them these handy little devices that can record ALL of these conversations. SO...I suspect that more people are going to start to come out of the shadows and join this class action suit filed in California which is going to open the floodgates for other people to file the same suits in other States. This has the potential to seriously tarnish Hermes reputation and cost them a great deal of money. Of course this is just my 37 cents on the topic...I threw in a few extra cents to cover inflation
      😭

    I love purses and I have always been super interested in a Birkin although it is way out of range for me. So I did some research and found a really nice dupe that was made out of all leather from an Italian company. I found one on the secondhand market and bought it thinking that I would just love it and use it all the time. The funny thing is is that I rarely reach for it. I guess it was a good trial to see if I really would have enjoyed having a Birkin and the truth of the matter is I’m not sure that it was all that I thought it would be.
    But I do love yours! And I love your attitude - it’s just stuff! The older I get the truer that statement is. Loved this video!

    I would never spend that kind a money on a bag watch or shoes it's just not me. However in my opinion if people have that kind a money and want to buy this bag or bags they should be able to and not to jump through hoops that this company is putting up
    I understend maybe a waiting list but you should be able to get it . Some people are on the waiting list spend a lot of money there and yet they don't have a guarantee they will get the bag. I don't think this is ok and this is not a good buissnes model. I hope something will change with this lawsuit for those people who have interest in it. Me I could care less. I was never jealous of people having expensive things I need to like it and have a need for it and not wanting it becaouse of jealousy or some imaginary status that people pushing it and they are horrible people and stealing money lying and cheating but hey they have birkin and status. No thank you for me. I don't understand how people like this bag ? It's a nice bag but nothing special it's not maid of gold . They made dupes better looking then this bag not that I'm getting a dupe but I've seen it. 🙅

    Hey Lisa, I don’t know that it’s so much of being unfair. I think it’s more of the attitude when you go into one of the shops. I’m not familiar with the lawsuit so I can. I don’t have an opinion, but I do think that the higher end stores have a certain, I don’t want prejudice because it’s not fair to say that but to a certain population so that just not anyone can go in and browse look and ask questions that is not something that you do in a higher end store. That comes from personal experience and I am from New York, so I think more than anything it’s an attitude. I don’t know again. I don’t know what the lawsuit is all about or what brought it to be but I do. I do think that we really need to change the attitude in any store in any area. Building a relationship Takes two people usually but if you don’t get that ability to do that, then you leave the store unsatisfied or even if you’re if you’re young feeling like I’m not good enough. That is my opinion. Thank you for bringing it up. Thank you for discussing it like how you go about and you’re thinking, that is very positive.

Very difficult to express a sharp 👌🏻 opinion on your question 🙋‍♀️ as I do have very good relationships with any of the sales person 🧍 in any of the boutique 🏬 I’m shopping 🛍️ 🛒 . So to me personally, Hermès is not any different than any other store 🏬😉😉😉. But it’s also true that I purchase at Hermès only the items that I truly love ❤️ and not by having in mind a specific bag 💼 that I will own or not down the road 🛣️. Might be too ‘naive’ as an approach but that’s what I do with basically every brand and shop 🏬 that I go to.
