- The HX Stomp came out 6 years ago. I dont think you should buy the HX Stomp in 2024 if you care about this one specific thing...
Let me know what you think, and until next time, let the music play!

"Don't buy. This technology is really old."
Plugs his strat into a Plexi.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
If your running out of processing power then your using the wrong line6 product. I think this video is misleading by saying the HX Stomp xl is old and restricted when they have 3 more models above this product that fix all your problems you described with the xl. I own Helix floor and have no problem with DSP and run very complex patches. I recently got Stomp xl to use with my tube amp and it's perfect. This is why they have options. Very misleading to say don't use line6 products because it's old technology. As far as routing options, range of platforms, continuous updates, customer service, build quality and the list goes on line6 is miles ahead of the competition. Sorry but feel you just gave line6 a bad wrap by comparing the problem you have with one of there platforms when they give the public so many more options. Look up which Helix/Hx product is right for you and you will find any of the problems you have are fixed with one of the many options they have that the competition does not offer. That's what make line6 keep up with the times. Research before you buy. Misleading to review one product and then have it reflect the entire product line.
He couldn’t think of anything else to make a video about and needed something that would force people to engage, so good for him. But he’s not smart.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
My Prius doesn’t drive like a Ferrari…the Stomp XL does NOT have the DSP of the Helix for a good reason, if the Stomp XL was the all in one solution, it would negate the purpose of the Helix!
No complaints from me as a bassist. I think most guitarists use a Stomp alongside pedals, which makes sense. I’m considering the same for bass, but it’s doing a great job so far.
Super misleading video in many cases, literally negative review for no reason for a pedal sized box which gives you amazing possibilities and results.
"You shouldn't buy this because it's old, but I'm still using one."
Yes but it’s not number 1. FM9 Turbo is #1
@@ryansnydercg ToneX One is looking good.
@@jeffcarricoguitar The more and more I've thought about this, it seems like these pedals all aim to solve something different. Some are designed to be stand alones while others are designed to be paired with other pedals. It all depends on your use case
I agree and disagree. The HX Stomp holds it's own today. The proof is in the sound. L6 has done a great job with updates to keep it relevant. Until L6 gives us a sniff of a new platform the Helix stuff will continue to be a great choice.
Agreed, the updates have kept it relevant. They built it with future proofing in mind and they’ve done a great job and the Stomp XL is a phenomenal piece of kit.
I've been gigging the HX XL for 2 years now as my entire gig rig.
Completely satisfied, it ticks all my boxes.
Never had any dsp issues, but my needs are very basic.
I don't use snapshots, just stomp mode, and I don't even run it in stereo. Just one cable straight to the PA using IEM's.
...and it fits in the front pocket of my gigbag 😁👍 (That was the main selling point for me)
It sounds great to me, but my ears aren't super refined for these thing, I still love the tones out of my old Fender Mustang 3 v2 amp 😂👍
The fact that it fits into a gig bag was the main selling point for me too
Does it sound good? Yes. Wasn’t that the goal? I got the HX Stomp because I wanted to stop buying gear. So far, mission accomplished.
100% this. I completely agree. I have this and the FM9 and I don’t have a need for buying more stuff. Just trying to give a different perspective
Are you upset that line 6 isn't asking you to drain your bank account? You didn't give one example of how it shows its age lol. You just keep saying it's old as if that's the only point you need. Like you're upset you can't run complex chains on the miniature version. It's suppose to be limited. The ampero has 12 blocks but there are limitations with that. We actually probably had the technology back then to have more blocks. But they didn't want to make their own competitor. Why would you buy the big helix if the small one is sufficient for every scenario.
Processing power of chips they could use are so much stronger these days. Just saying based on updated technology, this can and will be more
@ryansnydercg we have had the power to add more DSP when the hx stomp xl came out. Why didn't they do it? Look at the boss gt1000core it's signal chain is ridiculous in its compact size because it had a powerful chip. Line 6 intentionally isn't upgrading because they want you to buy the bigger models. We have always had the power. The issue is not hardware. That's why there has been no need to upgrade.
Even if they do come out with new modeler, the price will be higher. This is good for people just wanting 6 effects or less and one amp.
Tonex with my drives into HX stomp input at line level, Strymon reverb in the Stomp FX Loop. Plenty stomp processing power for more FX.
Providing us alternative to buy instead would be great, maybe a follow up video
I can certainly do that
Since you've ruled out software and firmware, I'm curious what specific piece of hardware in the helix is actually causing its obsolescence? Any thoughts?
Specifically the SHARC processor they all use. Like anytyhing in technology, years can create leaps and bounds in performance enhancements
The stomp could benefit from a newer DSP to reduce the power consumption and support dual amps. But besides this, people will be disappointed if they think the helix is ancien tech. The tech is in the firmware. The hardware just need to be able to support a reasonable number of blocks at a decent latency.
This. Updating the hardware would do wonders.
So far, Matteo Mancuso seems to managing ok with this old technology, and so am I. 😎
I did it was on sale at Sweet Water, great buy
I thought they were lowering it for good but saw it went back up. On sale is always a solid buy
@@ryansnydercg yeah, I thought there was a tweet or communication from Line 6 saying prices were going down saying it was going to be the "appropriate" price. I took that to mean it was permanent price decrease. Guess not. Glad I picked one up on sale.
this guy is weak
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I think the Helix is a great product but it takes a little too much tweaking to get to it to sound good for me personally. I actually don't think it's that user-friendly compared to the quad cortex and others, ET cetera.
I haven’t tried the Quad Cortex yet but I’ve heard good things about
So to clarify line 6 said they aren’t working on a helix successor I don’t know why people are still making videos telling people to wait
also just buy a helix it has more dsp lmaoo
Might be worth it to someone
I think maybe you've been out in the sun too long.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Ok take it the other way around, what is available that is better than the Helix HXStomp and in the same price range? You are making a video based on your expectation and crystal ball predictions.
I agree. There is not a better product than this line for the price point. 100% agree. But the next generation is coming soon with updated technology, there is no denying that.
lol.. hx is the goat! with or without external pedals... buy a product that suit ur needs..😅😅😅
Name 2 competitors at that price point that has more dsp
At the price point, there is nothing. You are absolutely right, but the next generation is coming soon and there are people who care about that
@ryansnydercg there is a point where hardware provided more then you would ever need. You realize the hx stomp XL was created somewhat recently. They could have easily added more dsp power but didn't really. There really isn't a need for another unit. But hey if you want to spend more money on repackaged things with unnecessary power all the power to you.
Thats right NOT just the helix! DECADE OLD TECH in All the Headrush FX/Amp modelers units from 2017 & 2023 they still use the "2014 Rockchip CPU". I find it very interesting but if the units keep selling these company's will not upgrade till they absolutely have to.
It’s the if it’s not broke don’t fix it mentality
@@ryansnydercg yeah I think you're right I did end up buying the headrush core used in flawless condition with box and manual screen protector intact only $629 at Sweetwater with the 45 day return the pedal just came out 8 months ago for $999 so it had the best price to Performance ratio out of all the pedals for what I I'm looking for but I'm really excited to see what offerings both companies come out with next providing that it's not with the same internals from 10 years ago LOL I mean like the real next gen.
I have thought about entering the modeling era. I was thinking of getting the ToneX One for amps and the Stomp XL for everything else. I am sure this would be killer, but I have wondered when their next unit would be introduced. I would hate to buy a unit that was phased out 6 months later. That would piss me off. Great Video.
That was me when I purchased my old Axe FX 2 XL+…. 6 months later the Axe Fx 3 was released
One of the top videos in your channel is literally titled "The Helix HX Stomp XL Is Amazing in 2024". I'm confused.
Both sides of the coin. Should never only hear one side of the story. I still believe it’s amazing in 2024, but for people who want more DSP or want the latest and greatest new shiny thing, then maybe avoid it.
I’m just here to give perspectives
@@ryansnydercg Makes sense. Thanks for your perspective, your videos were among the top of quite a bunch that I watched lol. And today I pulled the trigger on this thing. Loving it so far.
@@soundboy89 yeah man for sure. Glad you enjoyed the videos and glad to hear you joined the HX Stomp family! Welcome
Ah man, such a lot of false equivalency in this video. The Helix range are constantly being updated, and what we have now is almost and entirely new set of sounds and quality compared to what we had in 2015. I get what you're saying about waiting for the Helix 2, or whatever it might be but you can't write off an entire range which is pretty much best in slot for the price range because it's a bit older. The Stomp is also designed to be the scaled back version of the Helix modelling range, if you're maxing your chain out then your requirements are more geared towards the full Helix - remember, the Stomp is still the 'budget' option in the range.
You mentioned the FM9 in another comment which I'm sure is great, but it's also 3 or 4 times the price.
So 2 thoughts here... compared to the Helix the FM9 is $200 more. While is certainly substance, I would argue you are getting a lot more for the money. But yes, comparison to the HX Stomp is not fair and the lack of a expression pedal could be a deciding factor with that likely coming up to $300 difference
My main focus was on the technology, not necessarily the tones. Processors have come along way and I believe the next generation is going to be a LARGE leap in what these units can do.
Its age, or new things coming out do not make it sound worse. I use my Stomp XL with other pedals, so dsp is generally not an issue. I just dont like how it seems like all of these influencers act like you gotta buy the latest gadget to stay relevant.
Just a different perspective. I’ve done plenty of other videos about how awesome it is
@@ryansnydercgCool man.
How bout the valeton gp 200??
Ahhhh I haven’t tried that one
Im sorry Ryan but after listening to you i have to disagree with most things you are saying the reason why they haven't done anything is because there is nothing better.
Oh I agree. I was just giving another perspective. I still think it’s the best
yeah nah. The hx stomp is as good as all the newer modellers in terms of tones. In fact its still the OG because all the others have lifted everything from it without really bringin anything new. All the modellers are great nowadays. Its the form factor you need to decide on. If you think spending 2 to 3 times as much on a newer modeller is going to make you sound 2 to 3 times better....well goodluck with that.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I wish more people would bring this up.
yeah right...old my ass
It is for some people. Just giving another perspective
Jimmy Page used Echoplex and Wah pedal live , SRV used Tubescreamer , Fuzzface and Wah , Peter Green NO Pedals , Kossoff NO Pedals ....... HX Stomp is plenty for the average human , stop talking poo poo .
Depends on your use case
Sale pa alla pao ql
Yes
Lmao.. all these these videos, praising it and then all of a sudden this… 😂
Just giving the flip side of the coin, I still very much believe in the HX Stomp
