How to make bearing mounts from wood - Use bearings in your woodworking projects
Вставка

- Ball bearings exist in all sorts and shapes are used everywhere around us. When making more technical projects it can be really nice to use proper ball bearings for the axles and other spinning things. And there are lots of great standard flanged bearings and bearing blocks available to buy. But sometimes, be it for cost savings, looks, learning or to fit your needs better, you just want to make your own.
I’m making two different types of bearing mounts in this video that both clamp the bearing securely in place. Version 1 is for panel mounting and version 2 is an alternative to a bearing block or pillow bearing.

found your channel because of this video - I like shorter videos with quick tips, like this, as well as longer project videos. looking forward to some of your projects.
Great to hear! I have more planned!
This was EXACTLY what I was searching for, thank you so much for posting this helpful how-to video! I just wanted to know how to set the bearing in wood, and you answered to perfection. Thank you!
Yes, more like this, please!
Brilliant, I need to make this for my drill press that is doing dual duty as a drum sander and I don't want
the lateral pressure on the chuck to cause me problems...thanks!
Making a wooden reciprocating air motor. This video has come absolutely useful to me. Thanks.
These are unique and interesting. Definitely want more!
Thanks! good to hear!
Very nice crisp videos and are very useful Thanks
That was exactly what I was what I wanted to see. Thanks!
As it happens, I have some projects coming up that require bearings. Both are home built belt sanders. One for wood the other for metal. While I knew I'd have to use wood, I wasn't quite sure how to do it. Thanks for the info, it'll be a great help.
Thats awesome to hear! share it with me when it's done! love to see it.
Good idea. I have limited ability for metal working, so I like this as viable option for incorporating bearings in my projects. Thanks!
Thanks! that's exactly why I made these. when using some hard wood it can be a very solid alternative.
Nice work. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. I was looking for something just like this
Awesome! glad I could help
Thanks for the nice ideas.
Very cool . I like the idea of a component that could be used in lots of projects!
Thanks! Yeah, they are cool little components.
Well done Emiel!

Felipe Cárdenas Mora Hello ;)
Thanks!
You se the best
Thank you!
Buen video 👍
Gracias!
Let's say I was using the first one of these you made with a rotating vertical rod. I understand that the bearing mount would keep the bearing from falling through but how might one ensure that the rod wouldn't fall through without causing any friction? Great video and build, by the way!
There is a metal grass roller made by a company called Twose.,it uses a wood bearing soaked in oil.,i think it lignite..
Very nice. Can the second one also be made out of ply, and using timber as shown, is the grain direction critical?

Thanks! lets get there!
The Practical Engineer :)
This is practical engineering. I love this little helpers and i have a lot bearings. So i try my best. Thanks for the inspiration, king regards #EuerKonstantin
Awesome! id love to see it when you use it one day!
Not for every application, but very usefull for many, and something you can make and not have to buy and wait for, not to mention go shop for. I think these are very good and the people certainly need some kind of alternative to buying everything from China. It is just a bearing block. Nothing special. But, they are hard to fabricate in a home shop, and to make them out of wood is only useful in certain application, but many around the home. I say good job, thumbs up, and subscribed because of the inherent need for such things. I wished the average person could work in more materials at home to make even better examples, but for most people, wood is the only thing they can do. That's what makes this video important. You could use these all over the place.
Thanks Jeff. I'm totally guilty of buying components from China. Its so cheap.. But these are an awesome alternative indeed.
saludos desde argentina
Cool!
Thanks!

Thank you! That's nice to hear!
Cool brooo
Thanks!
Could you make a tonfa incorporating a ball bearing? Thanks
Very helpful buddy. on the the solid wood version, does grain direction matter?
Hey Martin! Thanks! Wood is the strongest with the grain so try to get the grain direction in the direction of the forces.
I´m really struggling with this! For example, there´s an vertical axis with a bearing. Is it possible to attach surfaces of wood to the side of the bearing so they´ll spin around the axis? If so, how do I attach that wood?
You'r amazing, i did mi own oreo dispemser
Awesome! I'd love to see it
The best
Thanks!
Guaau incredible
Gracias!
Great ideas! Thank you very much 😍
Now, how to make sure the axel stays inside the bearing, without loosening? Any tips?
*_NOTE:_* I have not used a bearing yet, but intend to purchase two to use on my mitre saw/thicknesser flip top cart. I cannot help wondering though how to affix the shaft (read, 25mm galvanised tube) into the (25mm x 47mm x 12mm) bearing, whilst ensuring a permanent tight fit?
Any idea?
Hey, There are two ways I'd go in this case. You can clamp something around the tube on both sides so the tube with the clamped object cannot move through the bearing. For example fix the tube to the tabletop and then it cannot slide out.
Or you could screw a piece of wood onto the bearing mount on the outside, than the tube also stays in.
Thank you *The Practical Engineer* 😉💖👍
Buen vídeo like
Gracias!
✌👍✌
Can you make a bottom and top mounted hinge point for a door? By bottom i mean underneath the door and on top of the door. Not mounted like a regular door hinge.
Yeah, you probably could. For the bottom one you'll want a thrust bearing though.
Nice work. What type of wood you use for pillow bearing ?
This was beach wood
I like your vidio =b
Thanks!
Épico esos videos que ases misoo sigue así misoo
ELIAN MIÑO Hola :)
I'm sorry, but as I don't understand your language well, I didn't know why you made 2 pieces. Does one fit the other? Thank you and congratulations for the illustrative video.
(Desculpe-me, mas como não entendo bem o seu idioma, fiquei sem saber porque fez 2 peças. Uma encaixa na outra? Grato e parabéns pelo vídeo ilustrativo.)
10/10
Thanks!
