One of the best podcasts so far. Thanks, Adam. I love yoga philosophy and the sutras in particular. Here in Brazil, most practitioners who deepen their practice and get into philosophy seem to go in direction of advaita Vedanta by default. It’s nice to have an open mind and not get too rigid

Thanks for the feedback Pedro, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Stay tuned as I am having regular sessions with Edwin, we love his take and delivery. The best thing is his rare insight as not only a scholar but a life long practitioner of bhakti yoga. Agree on avoiding the rigidity trap too, well said.

Yes, unfortunately very few in the West know that Advaita Vedanta is only one type of Vedanta and that the others are just as philosophically rigorous (some would say even more so).

All the acharyas of adwaita vedanta equally practised bhakti.
Bhakti is important and the sweetest way of self realisation.

Super, thank you for this fantastic dialogue (or interview). Understanding the source material and the environment it was transmitted and eventually written down remains key. For all spiritual traditions. The states of consciousness we can reach with Yoga practices are profound and Earth-shaking and understanding the framework and especially the work that has to go with it all is key to not getting completely lost. Thank you again!

absolutely, Edwin has helped me so much with understanding the context of The Sutras. Which is to say, I don’t appreciate them less as a body of wisdom, but as you suggest , more so. Thanks for listening and I’m glad you appreciated the chat 🙏

33:33, Patha system. Samhita Patha, Pada Patha, Krama Patha, Jata Patha, Danda Patha, Ghanta Patha, etc. The most difficult of all these are the Ghanapatha.
These mnemonic systems were used to memorize Vedas(Samhitas/Mantras, Brahmanas, Aranyakas and Upanishads). These helped to preserve not only the syllables but also the the swaras(musical tones). So the melody of SamaVeda is preserved as they were sung around 3500 Years ago. Incredible!! If you go to a Sanskrit channel- The Ghanapati, there they have a pool of scholars who are masters of this kind of memory systems..

that's fantastic, thanks for that information Sud. I belong to a Brazilian church where we sing hymns, and I have remembered hundreds of them, in order, off by heart, so I can really see how this system would work. Will check info.

@@thewitchskitchen For just a demo if it interests you. I am attaching the link for your consumption of the mnemonic techniques mentioned by Prof Bryant.
      m.ua-cam.com/video/ygK0oBR74pM/v-deo.html
The link is of the chantings of 3 verses of RIGVEDA which are dedicated to Lord Ganesha the first worshippable of all Gods. Originally these verses praise Lords Brahmanaspati and Indra which are used for Lord Ganesha's worship.
Firstly they chant only the verse in Rigvedic style. This is called Samhita Patha.
Then they chant with a mnemonic system with repititions of the individual words.
*Note these mnemonic systems not only preserve the verses but also their swaras(tones). Thus these chantings seem like the tape recording from chants done 5000 years ago. Remarkable!!
      HARI OM TAT SAT!!

The Gita says that one should transcend the mind, as one unites with God in yoga, so even ones actions are free of karma and one is above the Gunas.
All this means that leave aside your mind, have no fear or worry (which is mind) and do what you must to live (fully).
A person who acts without thought which is secondary, is om being (present).
Mind males alot of illusions that hinders the person from actually doing what they should. It is similar to the Ego, not allowing one to flow.

All those thinking regarding India's many tradition without one having hagemony like that of catholic church can easily be answered if you view Hindu Dharma as Indo European Dharma. Like there are many philosophy systems in ancienr Greece polytheism without catholic church like hagemon, just like India.
So the answers is Polytheistic nature of Indo European faith

The problem with professor Bryant is that he doesn't try to simplify his language for non-expert audience. His language is of a scholar, not a practitioner.

I am not a scholar; just a mom that loves the Gita... I understood pretty much everything he said. I did need to rewind a couple times to rehear when words were fast, but otherwise seemed straightforward to me.

    • @hkumar7340
      @hkumar7340 Рік тому +1

It is important that the scholar/practitioner, which is what Prof. Bryant is, does not mislead the non-expert audience. If he oversimplifies, the 'lay' follower will misunderstand. On the other hand, if something that he says sounds complex and difficult to grasp, the sincere student can raise appropriate questions. That is the right way of moving forward, and that is the method Prof. Bryant adopts.
