Re-Sole Your Shoes

  • This is an instructional video where I teach you to affix a old car tyre to your longboarding shoes.
Some things I didn't say in the video.
If you can't be bothered doing this, for a small fee, I can send you some rubber or do it for you. Message me on youtube if you would like this option.
Tyre selection: you should choose a well worn high performance tyre. If you choose a reasonably new tyre, your shoes will become platforms. Thinner still gives you good board feel under your foot. Don't choose a racing slick, if you do and you do a long footbrake, the tyre will heat up too much and give ridiculous amounts of grip, then, when you put your foot back on your board, the shoe will cool back down and you run the risk of your shoe gluing itself to the board with the melted rubber. High performance tyres are best.
Where to get a tyre: any car tyre shop will generally give away their old tyres, you can just ask them there.
Glue selection: you want a glue that will stay strong as it bends. Super glue dries solid and is virtually unbendable, whereas a good rubber glue stays strong as the shoe flexes.
Rubber is easier to cut when it is being stretched or bent.
    EDIT
From reading the comments, many have suggested hanging the tyre. I have tried this, I wasn't to much of simply hanging the tyre under it's own weight. However, my suggestion is to hang it from a bench vice and to sit on the tyre with all your weight (if you can do this without a bench vice, so be it, but my makeshift rig wasn't strong enough). The bench vice is very effective, however you can only do about a foot at a time before the tyre is on the ground. Cut off that segment (with enough to still be clamped) and begin again.

Tyrone, here's a few tips to make life easier. Get a cheap knife sharpener so you can touch up the edge frequently. Use a lubricant so the blade doesn't stick to the rubber. 409 works great and won't be a problem when you glue it. Hang the tire by the flap instead of having your sister pull the flap. That way the weight of the tire provides constant pressure and you can adjust it to hang at a comfortably working height.

Big job! Oh when you glue the sole onto the shoe it is wise to use a hammer to "settle" the sole to the shoe and gets rid of most air bubbles. Hammer onto the sole, after you place some wood or shoe last etc into the shoe.

Thanks Corbett! I wish I'd watched this video before I re-soled my steel cap work boots today; what a pain it was. I left the steel belts in and had to cut the tyre with a pair of Wiss tinsnips (very slow) and a hacksaw regularly oiled with a toothbrush dipped in motor oil. Of course I then had to clean the oil off and buff the rubber; I used an edge grinder before gluing the rubber to the stripped soles of the boots. Your technique of removing the rubber from the belts makes much more sense. I just could not figure out how to do it. Thanks again.

I resoled my shoe! Works fantastic on asfalt when breaking on longboard!! I just resoled one of my shoes and it's actually not that awkward to wear. Your tutorial was great to follow and my only problem this far is that the glue doesn't stick as well as I'd like in the edges although having to glue it back on with a better glue if that's necessary isn't the hardest fix. Very pleased!

Good video! I made tire baskets (see one of my videos) and remember generating a lot of smoke while cutting the tire with a rotary saw and abrasive blades. The metal mesh was a pain because it could rip or puncture your skin as you made contact with it. I like your method better.
Maybe it would be easier to trace the shape of the sole on the tire itself while leaving an extra 3 inches at one end [front or back] of the perimeter of the sole. That extra piece can be chewed up at the start of the cutting procedure but will be cut out once you remove the complete sole from the tire. That way, you will slice through less rubber and will save your cutting blades. Finally, consider using a vice (not another person) to hold the rubber while you foot can push the tire down if your are sitting on a tall stool. Thank you for the video.

Tyrone, it's been a while now (6 weeks) since I did my shoes. I used a good tire (Michelin All Terrain) that had the side wall torn out, but the tread was nearly new. Worked great. I used Shoe Goo to glue it to my boots. No separation issues. The only problem is they pick up pebbles, then drop them in the house. I did this as a curiosity project, but may well do it again because it worked so well. These are my yard work/utility boots, and it appears the sole will be much more durable than the original walmart/brahma sole. My tips; hang the tire, sharpen the blade frequently, use Shoe Goo, and maybe, stop dragging your shoes so much.

    • @TheTyroneCorbett
      @TheTyroneCorbett  10 років тому +4

If you have a tyre with less tread, you should pick up less stones through walking about. Inversely, you will have much less grip.
A few have suggested the hanging method, I gave it a go and have posted my thoughts on it in the description.

    A few good ideas there.
Sharpeners -- I have knife sharpeners, but I find that the quality of the metal used in the knife isn't amazing, so I'd need to touch up the edge too often, and you can get a pack of blades for under two dollars.
Lube -- good idea, I've not tried that before.

Ha! I thought of something like this recently. The soles and adhesives on branded shoes are absolute shyte in general, and more so for tropical climates. The humidity and heat just kills them and they come apart within a few months for me, my recent record being about 2 months. Oakley shoes were very good and lasted years, as opposed to reebok, nike, solomon and I may well keep them using this method. I don't splash out on michelins and pirellis for the car but worn ones for shoe soles will be cheap as fuck and last forever. Much less load on the rubber XD Thanks for the guidance.
