smitty builds his own Jet Dinghy for under $10,000, step by step instructions coming down the line for anyone keen to get into this awesome and exhilarating sport....
hey really cool to see Smitty's project coming along i am the designer of the plans he built his hull from one of the cheapest most awesome ways to get into jet boating
Only recently discovered your channel and finding it fascinating ! What a lovely environment for your children to grow up in. So many kids rely on mind numbing video games as pretty much their sole form of entertainment these days. Its wonderful to see children learning about the great outdoors. Very best regards from the UK
From what I hear, Sounds like your hitting the rev limiter during take off and turns. It is a protection mechanism for the engine. When the jet civitates it allows the engine to rev too high
I'm a millwhright..and been welding for 20 years..I love to come over and help.. I've built two jet boats out of old Sea-Doo parts old rebuilt aluminium boats..and ll worked well..good day mates..
i always wanted to build a jet boat , glad that i did not , i bought a big old yamaha jet ski and am very happy with it , its heavy so it handles great over waves and in the wind and goes fast enough for me
hey its a wearing and you buy stainless or plastic from ebay way cheaper than shops in nz,if its still misfiring check the pop off pressure settings in the carbs,if your still using the original fuel tap by pass that as they are common to blockup and cause issues,im assuming you already have cleaned the internal carb filters in each carb plus the one in the fuel tank pickup, also you had alot of water in the hull check you dont have an exhaust leak in the expansion chamber, the small welch plugs corrodes and water gets sprayed on the carbs and stator cover etc..lots of fun these small boats i built one about ten years ago still got it :)
Nice ride. if you have to preasurize the tank you have another problem. That's what fuel pumps are for. That is probably running a Mikuni pump with a crank pulse. The pump could be failing or the hose could have a leak OR... my thoughts due to your comments... the intake design is in need of reconsideration. Intake design is huge. I've played with these for years... I have refined my designs for both holeshot and top end. It is pretty huge but make sure the fuel delivery is good. Think about adding a fuel preasure gauge and monitor it to prove it is good. If it is not then fix it, blowing in the fuel cell won't work and a lean condition WILL cost you an engine!!! Carb jetting is also key. Cheers... Happy Trails!!!
Good stuff. Although I must say that you west coasters are a bit more flash and up-market than us guys from Wanganui. We did a similar thing quite a few years ago now. But we just got a crashed jet-ski and a 8 foot dingy. Then got the angle grinder cut the guts out of the jetski all in one hit, still attached to the bottom. Then cut a similar hole in the bottom of the dingy, a lot of epoxy and rivets and we were away laughing. The one your mate has looks like quite a flash harry job.
+Scott Giltrap - Backblocks Hunting I always thought the West-Coast folks were a bit more rough and tumble / hill billy types being on the opposite side of Christchurch?
Lol, mate that is one of the most Kiwi videos I've ever seen and sums up a lot of what Aussies like me love about Kiwis like you guys. Subbed for sure, that is gold entertainment right there, and not a trace of wanky tryhards :D
The person presenting a knife as a gift should offer a knife with a coin. The recipient promptly gives the coin back to the giver as a "payment" for the knife, thereby preserving their friendship (and fingers). Just an old tradition/superstition.
look at your spark plugs after a run. if they're dark and wet you're running rich if they are light brown you're fine. There's a cpl ways to get more power out of it. first you can lean out the fuel air screw on the carbs. I believe counter clockwise for leaner mixture and clockwise for a richer setting. the other thing you can do and most likely is the issue is lean out the carbs all together. on the needle that goes up with the slides there's internal settings on most. you just remove the top slide housing to access your need. there will be a circlip that allows you to make it run leaner. further down the circlip is the leaner it will be. take it down a notch on both carbs, take it for a run and check the spark plugs to make sure you're not running too lean. don't let the spark plug get anything lighter looking than a light tan color. something close to white will burn your pistons up. hope that works for you guys! I'd say you have plenty of fuel pressure, it's most likely running too rich. do you notice it goes through alot of gas, or foul plugs out alot?
Cool video. NZ looks laid back and chill compared to the USA. Your greenhouse is very cool. The boat looks like fun. The option for helmets might come useful when the river is low. Cheers from across the pond.
did u guys build the house and GREEN 🏠? .u guys did an awsum job... I'm a gardener in the US I was watching the jet boating until I saw your house and garden oh my goodness my wife would go crazy for your type of property.
hey josh how much do you charge for your hunting trips i just told my wife that were i want to go for my 40th. shit bro been hooked on your videos since i seen you on discovery over here in oz bro your a crack up you make me home sick. im from the west coast of the north island whanganui. keep up the good work love it
did u ever get the carbs running mint ? there is 3 systems inside a carb the idle the 1/4 to 3/4 and the wide open the idel ajst is the screw on the carb the wide open is the jet inside the bowl and the 1/4 to 3/4 is the deepth of the pin that goes up and down from the gas cable can show u a gd video if u need to know more
Try raise the fuel level in the carbs by lifting the floats up in the fuel bowels, kinda sounds like it's starving for fuel. Also a good idea to get some fresh sparkplugs (make sure they are gapped right)and have a go at reading the plugs (plenty of info on this online) Cheers boys!
+KiwiXT cheers mate, turns out it was the new pistons, they were to long, Smitty installing a head gasket to lengthen the stroke, will make sure he sees this in case that doesnt work
Josh James Kiwi Bushman Sweet as! Glad he found the problem. Compression ratio must've been super high! I reckon he should try and get some avgas and give that a hoon.
+KiwiXT hi mate, turns out pistons were too low putting the piston squish out of spec by .9mm, ive got it down with the lowest avalible gasket, but the head needs to be machined to bring it back into spec
You sure the tanks should have pressure? It's not a blocked or too smaller tank breather causing fuel shortage? Try running with fuel cap loose, love ya work mate keep it up!
No sorry. He purchased the hull off a random. How's it going? If you need any work done on it, contact Scott from @wildwaterjet he's extremely knowledgeable on all things jetboat
@@joshjameskiwibushman sweet as will do as hes close to me and its going pretty good , have done a bit of work on it now just maintenance stuff and its sweet as ,very fun little boat that's for sure
You shouldn't have to create a pressure in the tank it should be neutral where your problem is is not drawing a vacuum to draw a Knouff fuel is the way I would go as far as fixing that
Not liking the idea of the aerial drops, however how about a side by side comparison of 1080 and alternative control methods in a number of different areas in NZ. Still going to be hard to present and get acknowledgement from the govt to change (to right wing)
1 it's not a pressurized fuel system, it's a diaphragm fuel pump, if the tank is not vented to air the pumps can't pull fuel. 2 you are cavitating bad, you need to go with a smaller pitch impeller. You are very close.
Well done Smitty. Great little project you got there.
hey really cool to see Smitty's project coming along i am the designer of the plans he built his hull from one of the cheapest most awesome ways to get into jet boating

Love your work Josh.

I'd love to see that!
I think it's a pressure issue as well. Without a metal fuel tank you'll not get the extra-pressure you need imho.
Good video mate.
This guy is funny as hell.. subbed.. East Coast, 'Murica....
Murica! Fuck yeah!!!!
@@joshjameskiwibushman Just had to resubscribe, for some reason.. UA-cam messing with you?

It's a birthday gift, you want them to pay for their birthday present.

cheers mate, we are onto all that stuff. We sold the boat so no worries now
idk if you ever figured it out but its was probably getting water from the jet shooting back into the exhaust

loled @ Isn't Halloween next year though? Fuuuck you're a hardcore bushman!
why not put a small fuel pump on it
Why so expensive?
This is cheap, jet unit, engine, running gear, alloy cost, welding costs... to purchase one new it costs around $30,000
Brand new engine? And you didn't weld yourself then?
Carb needs a tweek
lol josh I have the same shirt as ur son

I own the boat now. going mint as. rave valves needed cleaning and few other things. new impeller and wear ring. 👍
good shit mate, glad its going good. You got that for a bargain aye! Drop us a line if you make it over these ways. cheer
yea mate. plan to head you way at some stage when other boys get wee boats
What the fucks a life jacket
hi
Saw one exactly the same as this one in whakatane today
What's the horse power and speed these are capable of ?
anywhere from 74 to 300 horses and 50 to 115 kmph
It's cavetating... Need to direct more water to the impeller..
that wasnt our concern at that stage, worn impeller housing was the cause of the cavitation, but we were aware of that, cheers
You want to see my terrno.
lol....carbs need re jetting
yep, thats exactly what it was mate. Do you rebuild engines? If so send me an email to kiwibushgear@gmail.com Cheers
