Hey man! What I'd like to know is how this relates to Pete Cowan's equal and opposite grip pressure, which I know you did a video on too. Pete describes hand pressure on a recent James Robinson video with a towel. The lead hand is applying a force as though it is moving towards a stronger position whilst the trail hand is opposing it towards a weakened position. When I do this I get loadsa speed and pressure on the ball but the lead hand pressure feels like the same movement which leads to a cupped wrist. So what's a sound way to apply the pressure without getting a cupped wrist as you demonstrate in this video. Simply more opposing pressure with the trail hand? Or is it better to do the opposite and feel like bowing the lead wrist?
I have recently recorded my swing while I was doing a gap session and lag is definitely a week spot in my game. Practice practice practice lol. Cheers.
youre the man carter!!!! i asked ya about this a few months ago and you said something was coming. glad you made a video about lag to helps us out bro. Cheers mate to best golf pros you, finch and fryer.
I’ll definitely be checking some slow mo vids of me for this as I fight an open face with my irons and as a repair I’ve strengthened my grip resulting in better shots but also a good amount of pulls. Will be looking at my wrist angles to see if those are the issue (definitely think it is as I came from baseball for years to golf now). Thank you so much Andy. Keep the awesome videos coming. Would love to see a video on AoA in regards to different loft drivers. Went from a 9° set at 7° to a 10.5° set at 8.5° and saw a noticeable difference in loss of distance at the beginning but gained it back after adjusting my AoA to a more positive and less neutral/negative.
Thank you for this great video. I’d like to see more about hand-hip relation, sometimes the hands seem to be behind, sometimes in front. And good to hear that you don’t have a focus on speed. Sometimes Rick says speed first, aim second, and I’d like to see it the other way around.
Great video Andy im not at the position in my game to worry about lag as just started playing after long lay off but the tips of the swing and hand positions really hit home. Thank u
Flop shots around the greens Carter....I bought a used Calloway special edition hickory stick shaft flop wedge in a bin....it works great in close around the green over traps etc...stops on a dime too but only good from about 30 yards max...how about a lesson on different length flop shots?
Great video. When I create that lag I tend to fat the strike. And now after watching this video I think it's because my waist wasn't turning properly. Thank you
Perfect timing, my day off. 🤣 Well, half day off. I’m going out to do some Uber Rides shortly for a few hours. My new golf clubs aren’t all on order yet. Still need the Driver and a 2/3 Hybrid. Looking TSi3 on both. Plus I have to buy my 11-yr old daughter a set of clubs. She’s a lefty. I tried to start her with a set of righties when she was small. But Barbie won her attention. Now she wants to try but as a Lefty. I’m down but in a year or two she’ll be 5’4”. I’ll need adult clubs for her. 🤣 My Girl is tall like her dad. These are good drills I can rehearse in my brain. I don’t want to practice with the wrong clubs, it might ingrain something I don’t want. Or am I wrong? 🥂
Brilliant vlog Andy - your instruction is always thorough and precise. Wee request; bearing in mind how Paul Casey had a ball roll into a pitch mark, could you do a vlog on how to play out of divot holes? Cheers
Thanks for this clarification. Could you do something similar on “release”? Struggling to get the mechanics right still. (Restarted golf about half a year ago).
Lag the main problem I have. As a junior 25 years ago we always wanted more lag. Now I get the club stuck behind and flip. So hard to change after many years of chasing lag.
A video on lag? ?.. I'll catch up on it later ... is lag a sensation of pressure between your two arms? That your lead arm "restraining" your trail arm?
Carter, I’m guessing I’m not the only person here that would like to see some video’s around Dubai. Obviously they wouldn’t fit on this channel, but maybe a 2nd channel? 99.9% of us that watch you will never get to see Dubai in person, so maybe video some cool things you do when you aren’t working? Yeah I know that means more editing! lol
Yes that was genuinely a plan I had this but I’ll be in the UK April- Sept but I will revisit it then. (Not a 2nd channel but a little dubai content would be cool) Also, theres no reason why you’ll never see Dubai in person is there? Great holiday destination
This is a very old school view of lag and whilst it contains some very good information, particularly in relation to the grip, IMO (as an amateur golfer, so please take it with a huge pinch of salt) it is almost entirely wrong. The modern view considers a golf swing to be a rotational system where big muscle groups drive the swing and real speed is generated via ground forces and getting the rotation of the upper half of your body to "lag" behind the rotation of the lower half. Of course wrist angles are important in controlling face, but the wrist angles which control face are those imparted by pronation/supination and/or rotation they are not imparted by ulnar/radial deviation. If you want real speed then you need to concentrate on ground forces and the correct sequencing of rotation in the downswing such that your arms lag behind your chest rotation which in turn lags behind the hip rotation which in turn lags behind your leg drive.
Yes, lots of truth in what you say and you describe the swing mechanics excellently but now ask the 'average' amateur golfer to use ground force, rotation and sequencing?! Whilst the 'modern views' are correct (and what we as coaches do teach) in my experience its wholly unachieveable. Sometimes the 'old school' ways work more effectively and can be more relatable. I'm 35 so i'm olf the old school style golf swing, I use very little ground force, I use my wrists in the 'wrong' way but I play decent golf... there's many ways to swing your swing.
@@andycartergolf I am definitely an average golfer and no longer in my first flush of middle age! Yet I have just had a lesson which was solely about use of ground forces in the back swing and down swing (I am guessing that sequencing comes next), putting it into practice is hard, particularly with my knees, but even after a couple of hours of practice I can see the benefits. My problem with the old school description of lag is that it confuses two different types of wrist movement. The wrist angle at the top of the backswing which creates the impression of lag is almost entirely the result of ulnar/radial deviation which adds exactly nothing to club head speed when you release it ( a simple test, hold the club in your lead hand and waggle it using ulnar/radial deviation, the movement is up and down not side to side so you have imparted zero acceleration of the club towards the target). The wrist angle that you need to concentrate on to impart speed to the club head is the pronation/supination angle but you have to be careful when releasing that angle because it can, and frequently does effect face angles - as your video beautifully simply showed. That leads into the second problem for most golfers, possibly other than those who play one length clubs, when you should start to release the angle in the downswing to maximise club head speed and still have the club face arrive at the ball square to the target line surely varies due the fact that the clubs are of different length. That means you have to have very good timing which requires lots of practice. I am not convinced that is any less hard than concentrating of ground forces and sequences...but as I messed up my lead wrist many years ago I may be slightly biased against using a lot of wrist movement!!
Carter: ur squaring too early! Open is actually in the plane of the swing (same as a vertical swing). The (very) late release is like "cracking the whip". The face will square due to forces generated during the downswing acting on the clubhead. The clubhead "does" the work of squaring late. It's very mechanical but looks like a natural movement, which it is.
Do you work on ‘Lag’ in your golf swing?

This was so easy to understand, I’m on my way back to single digits this year and so many things clicked for me here. Well done Andy🙌🏽
Love it Kip! Hope it goes well
Just tried out the waiter right hand wrist position and it’s worked a charm I was definitely rolling wrists! Really loving your videos. Thanks
Nice one Andy! A somewhat confusing subject explained clearly like a pro.
I have recently recorded my swing while I was doing a gap session and lag is definitely a week spot in my game. Practice practice practice lol. Cheers.
Another great tip Andy, keep them coming, they are so helpful
One of your best instruction videos ever! Great instruction and easy to understand!
Very kind. Thanks Benny
Love this thorough explanation.
Thanks Chris
Dude I love this. The track in the background is so good!! Amazing tips!!!!!!
Thanks Brent

Great training video Andy. I need to work on my irons and this VLOG helps.
Great video, chock full of nuggets to choose from. Keep 'em coming! Some tips for the putter would be welcome!
excellent video Andy, very well explained 👏👏

Amazing vid. Am working on this right now so it is timely.
"Glad" we suffer from the same disease; scorecarddisease.. But then videos like this and the previous one about how to play par 5 are very important.
Thanks for this, as a relatively new golfer these tips will help me going forward
This is an awesome video Andy, hits the spot! Love the clear instructions and also the options of the different checkpoints we can try and feel.
Thanks Kuma
Good video, like the way you help gain control through these techniques 👍🏻 and need all the help i can get lol 😂.
Great video. When I create that lag I tend to fat the strike. And now after watching this video I think it's because my waist wasn't turning properly. Thank you
Glad it’s helped you figure out what could be wrong buddy. Lets get to the to fix it 🙌🏽

As always massive thanks for your clear instructions really helpful content.
Do you think a neutral left hand grip gives a better release in the iron swing, as it is a descending blow?
Great stuff, Andy. Would be very interested to learn more about "flash speed". And .. how fast (% of maximum) should the average shot be (80%, 95%)?
Funny you should mention that. Nice little Flash speed tip drops on Tuesday!
Nice video
I assume this can be for any club from driver to lob wedge?
Absolutely. But I’d be careful with the wedges
That right hand tip "like a waiter" is that also the same with the driver? Even without a club I can feel helpful that it is to stop my cast.
Yes absolutely the same buddy
Lag the main problem I have. As a junior 25 years ago we always wanted more lag. Now I get the club stuck behind and flip. So hard to change after many years of chasing lag.
Yes there has to be a balance between control and speed
I wish I had been shown how important it is to keep the body turning when I was a kid
