Diagnose it... What's wrong with Playoff Harden?

  • @iAintSayDat

Harden’s style is fundamentally unsuited for the playoffs. He’s not “choking”. This is what foul baiting, ball dominate, non defenders who are in questionable physical condition get against better teams in the playoffs.

    • @Isaiah_McIntosh

I mean you'd think he'd be like 80% of current luka at least if he can shape up. No reason for him to so notably wilt every post season in basically every dimension.

The thing that annoys me the most about harden is that he tries to draw fouls without trying to make the shot. Guys like embiid and butler draw a lot of fouls, but they’re always trying to make the shot so that even if the foul isn’t called, they still score. Harden just does jerky things with his body to draw fouls and doesn’t even try to make shots sometimes

His legacy is set and it isn't changing. He'd have to win a title to alter it and that's not happening, because he never wanted to win titles. He wanted to score a bunch of points, win MVPs, make as much money as possible, and be the VIP at the strip club. His passion isn't winning, it's living large. And good for him, I'm sure it's a fine life. But that's not a mindset that wins titles.
Unlike you, I'll embrace the label of "hater" and I'm glad he hasn't been to the Finals. I despised watching his style of play from the beginning, and from where I sit a guy like Harden being a Finals MVP and spawning legions of imitators is just about the worst thing that could possibly happen to the game.

You nailed it. He's predictable, he leans on the ref's whistle to get his points, and he lacks conditioning. As for how he can redeem his legacy? It's not going to happen. He'll be 33 years old next year, and if eight seasons at the Rockets trying to prop him up didn't show him of the importance of playing real defense and not being a statue off-ball, then one more season tramping around the league won't either. I blame Harden and the NBA for his short comings in the play-offs. Nba rules allowed him to become dominant. The contact he could create and get rewarded for it made him impossible to guard. NBA changed the way Refs "reward" the offensive player for creating contact has hurt his game. Harden hasn't adjusted well to these changes. Come play-off time we all know the game is allowed to be more physical you can actually guard Harden now without worrying about ticky tac calls. Great players make adjustments when faced with adversity. Greatness comes in June and not January. Harden is Mr. January.

To compare even peak Harden to Kobe or Jordan is beyond absurd, and those analysts should be ashamed of themselves. The intensity of defense during Jordan and Kobe's time was on a whole other level than when Harden dominated. He would have never been close to averaging 36 a game during the 90s or 00s.

He simply plays a ineffective and dumb style of play. He’s an all time great and with good coaching would be a phenomenal #2 for embiid. Very excited to see his bounce back next season IF he wants to. Hes gotta get back into shape and mind of winning.

Lukas ability to let Brunson, smith, dinwiddy and others create there own shot while still being able to feed them and create his own is what’s winning the mavs games, along with Jason kidds elite defensive mind. Again I said you can beat average teams with that style but you simply can’t beat great teams like that. Look at jordan 86, lebron 07 finals, kobe 06 and many more. Isolation kick out ball will never beat great teams. Great teams beat Great teams not a individual greatness

      @Isaiah_McIntosh 2 роки тому

@@gunny-lneck4352 When you actually look at shot attempts, and usage rate in those wins vs losses they are pretty much the same. There's a slight transfer in time of possession from Luka to Brunson but it's really not as significant as the eye test conclusion might be. Stat for Stat its also very similar to harden throughout his career. However there's differences in Lukas shot selection, more midrange and post ups allowing for offensive versatility that's really the big difference individually on the offensive end despite both being isolation players. Even if the offense is five out let luka work otherwise pick and roll, (Dantoni ball) that means a couple different potential looks with rather than just a hard drive to the basket or 3 pointer like it did for James in Houston after a while. Apart from that luka improves in every statistical aspect except assists in the post season unlike harden who becomes worse in every way while becoming much worse in game 7s, again the reverse for luka.
The team compositions are important but this really good defense around a single star is the norm among those ball dominant teams. So while I agree that stylistically this heliocentric drive and kick isn't optimal championship basketball, it's not the cause for hardens post season struggles. There are problems more specific to his game and mentality that caused issues with a lack of offensive versatility within his version of heliocentric offense.

He'll have some nice games in the playoffs, but when the pressure is high, and the defense is tighter, and they're not calling little bullshit calls, he just can't get it done. The worst playoff performer I've seen from such a high end player- since barry bonds. Bonds had that one good playoff year, in particular, the world series to save his playoff reputation from sheer disaster. It'll take a similar effort from harden to at least quell some of the criticism. And I don't think it'll happen. AND I also agree about his game, he just doesn't do enough, fast enough, to keep scoring on teams in the playoffs. Someone like Kobe, Mcgrady or Jordan had it all, he only has a few moves, and all of them are slow, and require good distance, and soft defense to work, and even in this soft era, the playoffs do get called looser, and he just can't get it done in those circumstances.

Harden is the reason why the Nets traded a lot of the core assets of our team just to be a double agent for the 76ers all along. I use to be a James Harden fan from 2012-2016 but after his foul baiting tactics, being way too ball dominate, constantly complaining and pouting to refs, no heart and effort on defense, and most importantly underperforming in the playoffs. He sabotaged the Nets in the very beginning of the season forcing KD to do a massive carry job while he'd let teams like OKC, Rockets, Kings, etc. win games. Then that all led to KAI and KD getting all of the criticism when James Harden deliberately lost games, got fat and pouted two back to back teams in back to back years. Top 75 my ass

When the games become serious, teams will key on important players, and try to exploit their weaknesses. Harden has never bothered to diversify his game, so he's easy to predict, and key on, and yes, he gets picked on because of his atrocious defense. Harden would have to have a magical change of heart, and increase his work eithic. If that didn't happen within the first five years of his career, it frankly won't ever happen.

It’s the mentality and mental toughness that make the difference, that’s why guys like Giannis and Kawhi succeed and why guys like Harden and even AD slow down or fail. Harden is by far a more skilled offensive player than Giannis, but the reason why he always chokes in the playoffs is because he gives up once he sees that he can’t flop all over the court and get the same fouls he does in the regular season, and then he shuts down and either passes the ball away or takes terrible shots for no reason

Harden’s game is too predictable. He needs to either add a midrange shot to his game or run more plays off ball. He needs to start playing like his former teammates KD and Kyrie because they have a offensive bag and he doesn’t.

As a harden fan… Ima be honest, since 2015 ( since harden became a superstar) harden has only had 2 playoffs series where he choked and thats 2017 vs spurs and this year vs Miami. But for most of harden’s playoff career he just lost to BETTER TEAMS that were great defensively so once they key in on him there his teammates couldn’t get it done. I truly dont see how he’s a playoff choker

    Two words: O-ver RAT-ed
Harden's always been a volume shooter, his career points & 3PTM totals depends loads of attempts, as his very pedrestrian 3PTM shooting of 36% reflects. That's not even in the top 250 players all time.
Rediculous as it is now, there was a time during his Houston years when he was actually being compared with Curry as a the best 3PT shooter 😂 But the reason he was, was because he was attempting so many more than Steph & everyone else. Including games when he'd put up crazy numbers like 30 plus 3PTA (attempts) by himself.
For comparison, Curry's career 3PTM completion rate is a robust 43%, 11th best all time.

Legacies can always be turned around, everyone remember when Dirk was consider a choker?
It would only take one Championship run, maybe with one or two signature big-game moments, for most people to forget about his current rep
However, I'm with Jonny, I have absolutely zero faith this will happen

Good point! I do remember that, and I try to remind people of it quite often… BUT Dirk did not have NEARLY the underperforming resume that Harden does. Harden has a lot more to undo. I think he can make us forget some of it, but idk about all of it.

@@jonnyarnett that's fair. And I also think that Dirk was never showing the potential (or getting the ridiculous praise in the clips included in this video) of Harden. So Harden has a lot more to prove . . . and definitely hasn't lived up to it
But I do think NBA fans can be fickle, and narratives can change on a dime

He is a playoff choker, but some of these takes you had were clear cut bias. I don’t blame 2018 2020 or 2021 if they either lost to the superior team and/or with a combination to injury to himself or his teammates. 2016 they were bad all year, so there was no expectations.
