Another cool fact is the Officers and those privately purchased had slightly taller and pointier spikes than issued pickelhaube.

One of my favourite depictions of this helmet is from the Simpsons, where a group of men graduate as German WW1 reenactors. Of course, being Americans at a graduation they throw their spiked helmets into the air…
Right before WW1, the Impeiral Army adapted the M1915 which got rid of the bright brass and silver. They went to the steel fittings which is why you see so many with dark colors. The M1895/97 were the last with shiny brass.
According to no more existing Military Collection in Bartenstein Castle, some Helme mit Spitze had been in 1914 simply got been painted at brass parts. Please never use Pickelhaube , was never official term.
Makes you wonder how many times the spike ever hit a doorframe or poked a hole in a low ceiling.
Considering how tall the Prussians were they were probably used to ducking through doorways.
Unlike the U.S. Chopper borne troops the Germans could not sit on them to keep from getting their balls blown off.

It is interesting that the "symbol of Prussian militarism" was created in the Russian Empire - in 1837, the prototype of the helmet, designed by Tsar Nicholas I together with the court painter, Major General of His Imperial Majesty's Retinue Lev Ivanovich Kiel, was presented to Prince Charles, who arrived on a friendly visit. The prince liked the helmet very much and, upon returning to Berlin, demonstrated it to his father, King Frederick William III and offered to equip the army with it. Frederick did not like the helmet, because it was "expensive and not practical", but as soon as he died and Frederick William IV ascended the throne, he approved the adoption of this helmet with certain changes to the original design in 1842. In Russia, the refinement continued for another two years, until 1844.
The helmet was developed based on two types of headgear - the Russian cuirassier helmet of the 1835 model and the Ancient Rus helmets.

@@jamalwilburn228 Oh yeah. Tsar Nicholas, Kaiser Wilhelm, and King George V were cousins with Queen Victoria being their grandmother IIRC. And as children they'd play together during family get togethers. And 2 of them, forget which 2, looked so much alike that they would regularly dress in each other's clothes to try to fool their servants and relatives.
Don’t forget that Russian Empire royal family from 17 century were 95% Prussian.
There are lots of minor variations in a picklehaube to tell what kind of role you served in the Imperial Army. One's chiscales, wappen, crown, and base of your crown.
The Pickelhaube is a German symbol akin to the Luger. So much so that the symbol for "German" in sign language is to raise your finger like the spike on a Pickelhaube. The Russians, who loved the Prussian system and even copied its rank system (Gefreiter -> Yefreitor), used Pickelhauben up to the early battles in the Crimean War; and the Museum of the French Foreign Legion in Aubagne has a captured Russian Pickelhaube in its collection.
In Latin America, the Pickelhaube has one of the most important places in terms of culture and has the most long standing presence. The first time the spiked helmet crossed the ocean into South America was when the Empire of Brazil contracted its second Legion of German mercenaries in 1851, nicknamed Brummers, for its war against the caudillo dictators Juan Manuel de Rosas and Manuel Oribe. The model was the 1842 standard of the time with high helmet bell (shown at 1:01), and the disciplinary system was Prussian, even though the legionaries themselves were recruited mostly from the Schleswig-Holstein, and they didn't appreciate that one bit. The uniform was bought by the Brazilian emissary Rego Barros in Hamburg, and they were the same as in the army of Schleswig-Holstein with the difference of white bottons and insignia being yellow in the Brazilian version. The jacket was dark blue and the trousers were light blue with a white lampasse; collar and cuffs where red. The infantry had the spike while the artillery and engineers had the ball on their Pickelhauben. Around 200-300 modern Dreyse rifles and carbines were also bought (probably in Mecklenburg) and used in one of the first instances of sniper employment in America, where a group of 100 German sharpshooters were used as screening force with the especific purpose of suppressing the Rosista artillery in the Battle of Monte Caseros (1852); which proved a success. Unfortunatelly, there are no known surviving examples of Brummer Pickelhauben.
After that, the Brazilian military and regional police forces adopted the Pickelhaube en masse with the proclamation of the republic in late 1889, as a means of differentiating them from the monarchy uniform. The Brazilian Marines would have a version with crest instead of a spike, while other forces, such as the Paraná Military Police would have all kinds of models - from spikes, to crest, to trichter. Firefighters are part of the military police in Brazil, and were supposed to pick-up arms and fight alongside the army, and they were also with the Pickelhaube.
In Germany, after the fall of the monarchy, the Pickelhaube was still used in cerimonial occasions with president Hindenburg being one of its users. One cover not mentioned in the video was the dragon top of the Imperial cuirassiers. East Germany used Pickelhauben in a few cerimonial instances because it was the official line of the DDR to present itself as the true Germany, with its true German tradition; and as such used uniforms more closely resembling those of the Second and Third Reich, while accusing Bonn of both being a US puppet and a continuation of the Nazi regime, in typical communist double-think.

As I stated in the previous video that got taken down. The metal version of the helmet was worn by heavy cavalry units of the prussian and the saxon army after the creation of the german empire in 1871. Guards Cuirassiers and Cuirassiers had the metal helmet as welll as the 1st Royal Saxon Guards Heavy Cavalry and the Carabiniers (2nd Royal Saxon Heavy Cavalry). The heavy cavalry regiments of the Bavarian Army had the leather version. Brunswick and Bavaria where the last german states that adopted the Pickelhaube they did so in 1886 after Ludwig II death. Before that all Bavarian Units had leather helmet that was somewhat a mix between the pickelhaube and the dragoon style helmet. It was made from leather but instead of a spike it had a woolen comb in German it was called Raupenhelm (caterpillar helmet).
The reason the swedisch Life Guards where the metal helmet is because they where the fittings of a heavy cavalry regiment the Infantry component of the swedish Life Guards wear pickelhaube or grenadier style bearskins.
When high ranking prussian officers or officuals whore the metal helmet they did so because they where a honorary member of one of these regiments and whore their Uniforms. Like Bismarck who often whore the Uniform of the Seydlitz Cuirassiers or Wilhelm II who often whore the Uniform of the Life Guards.
Some Metal Versions had been had been from Steel, few of a copperbased alloy , in german called Tombak. With exeption of noted helmet variations, some other Metal/ leather helmets existed for the palace only Units of Prussia and smaller rulers. In Prussia such an in Palace unit had been the Leibgendarmen, or in Bavaria the Hartschiere. Those palace Units had been the unly Military Units, the rulers lower than King still had under Personal command, the Main troops of Greatdukes, Dukes, Princes ( and governing Mayors of Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck) came with Military conventions of 1867 and 1871 into prussian Army, so under command of prussian King.
@@brittakriep2938 You're right, 5 Regiments had the Tombak helmet both Guards Regiments (Life Guards, and Guards Cuirassiers, 6th Cuirassiers and both Saxon Regiments.
Some of the Jäger zu Pferd Regiments (light Cavalry Regiments like the french chasseurs a cheval but rasied from dispatch rider detachments so their uniforms where derived from the heavy cavalry in germany) had a blackened version of the steel helmet the others had the leather pickelhaube that was worn by the Dragoon Regiments.
Yes the Leibgendarmen whore the same style helmet.
While the helmet of the Bavarian Hartschiere was also made of steel it was antother style of helmet with the neckguard not extending as far and bowl of the helmet being noticeably higher.

I am no expert, but after 40 years of visiting dozens of museums, castles and collections, reading german language books and magazines about weapons and Military History, i have Basic knowledge. When talking with Museum Staff, reenactors, collectors, huntsmen, target shooters or Security guards, they are sometimes surprised.
That in time of ,Second German Empire ' both Line Infantry and Dragoons ( Dragoner) wore Same Style of helmet, that is no surprise. When Dragoner appeared in 16th century, they had been only , mounted infantry ', using badest available riding horses only for fast moving or when used as , Infantry Support ' to cavallry Units. When in 16th /18th century 1000 cavallry men had as adition 300 mounted infantrymen , this Mixed unit could do much more than a pure cavallry unit. And Frederik ll of Prussia noted: Don' t forgett infantry Training of Dragoner! They mostly serve today on horseback, so infantry Training must Not have quality of Line Infantry, but it is still necessary!
i never knew about WW1 until i married my husband, Himself being a veteran and avid history collector as a hobby he introduced me to the war. I see it as an interest and sad part of history
that so many suffered. I never even heard of the Bush War in Africa until i found my husband served in the South African National defense force and also did law enforcement in Africa.
I love this channel because even as a young woman gaps of knowledge are being filled in.

The concept of head injury reports increasing simply because the soldiers were alive and well to report them is interesting. Just because there's a lot of something doesn't necessarily mean that something is bad. It could be the opposite as it was in this case. Very interesting.
It's an effect called survivorship bias. It also played a huge role in damages and injuries with bomber planes and their pilots in WW2. Very interesting to look at.
Small correction: the steel Pickelhaube was actually the original desgin. But it was thought to be too heavy for the infantry.
So it became the cavalery version which was just liked by the nobility bc they prefered the looks. Plus Otto von Bismarck also is often depicted with a curassiers uniform (heavy cavilary) bc those were seen as the bravest, the ones that break the lines of the enemy. And people wanted to paint Bismarck the same way
Fun Fact : The bottom of the Pickelhaube was used for the M1895 Prussian Marine/Police shako.

This wasn't mentioned, but I always wondered why the British helmet was relatively narrow in height, but with a wide brim, compared to most of the others being more a symmetrical "bowl" shape....this was because most head injuries happened from artillery, which often exploded above the ground (10'-30' ), sending shrapnel downward. The British helmet provided a bit more coverage than the others.
That may be, but mostly it's because they couldn't press it any further without weakening the steel. The British priority was to get as many helmets out, as quickly as possible.
The French helmet is made of riveted panels, where the seam is covered by the brass crest.
The stahlhelm is better in every way, but it requires something like eight or nine pressings to achieve that shape.
Germany had already a very advanced steel pressing industry, but it is remarkable that they opted for such a complicated shape under wartime conditions.

At Fort Mackinac Michigan the re-enactors/ park rangers wear pickelhaube's since it was wore by troops stationed there until the forts decommissioned in 1895.

We can't say that those late 19th century german high uniforms weren't ...spectacular, such as those seen on The Prisoner of Zenda, expecially James Mason's one. Naturally, going in a modern war with these could surely be a little "lethal"!
In some movies we can see also how US cavalry adopted, for the high uniform, a pickelhaube and a prussian style jacket, moving away from the french inspired original one.

In Germany the similar helmets with a ball had been for artillrymen, preventing accidents among guncrew, and representing cannonball. The word Pickelhaube was in Germany never official termunly a popular nickname, officially this helmet was called Helm mit Spitze/helmet with point, so french , casque a point' is corect. Only a different helmet, used by Police in German Part of Austro- Hungarian Empire was realy officially called Pickelhaube. And Pickelhaube translated as Gurkenhelm is possible, but: Haube, was centuries ago sometimes really a helmet, see the Sturmhauben used by Landsknechte, spanish Moiron was in HRE known as Spanische Sturmhaube, Zischägge for their roots as Orientalische Sturmhaube. ( compare Zischägge with imperial Metal Version of Helm mit Spitze, especially Neck piece). But today, and in time when Helm mit Spitze was used, Haube means a Kind of womens headgear, you today see only in use, when a woman wears Dress in very old Style ( before 1900) and a Pickel is in German a pickaxe or an icepick, okay the tool is sometimes called Spitzhacke/ pointed hew.

Since 1860s no more a Support Militia for Army and Police, today only private tradition keeping ceremonial Units, they still wear Helm mit Spitze at many Towns.

Dragonman Mel Bernstein erroneously called the Pickelhaube a Kaiserhelmet. Best Pickelhaube scene on film is the one from "Shout at the Devil" (1976) starring Rene Koldehoff (as the German colonial officer), Roger Moore and Lee Marvin.
Yes it is and also thanks for the make-up video as well since the first version of this got removed with UA-cam being a #$%^ along with copyright claims against this channel really look into that and also beware of mistaken identity since there's another person going by this name and he's a notorious child killer that got executed in the news which you can look up and other ideas for next videos you can tell this author may want to look into the B-52 bomber, Stinger missiles, Mi-24 Hind, A-1 Cobra helicopter gunship in a really in-depth, DSHK Machine gun, T-54/55 tanks and MIG jets of the Vietnam and Korea conflict are just a few. Who knows what other ideas are out there since there's so many. Maybe look into AK-47 and M-16, or the modern tanks like Abrams and Challenger is another.

The British used a helmet called the "Home Service Helmet", which replaced the Shako helmet, in 1878. It is similar to the Pickelhaube, except it is made of dark blue cloth and had a bronze spike. It kinda looks like a bobby's helmet
In Portugal it's still used by the National Guard, the GNR.
Also something to note, its that the pickelhaube the Swedish royal guard uses shown in the video, are the ones of the dragoons. The infantry section of the royal guards uses a black pickelhaubes that is the same as the German one.
1:57 it's has to be a tedious deal to get that eagle screwed on just right. Imagine your Kaiser Whilhelm and you see on of your guards eagles askew atop the helmet because they didn't put it on right 😂.

The Swedish royal guards (dragoons) use the pickelhaube with their ceremonial blue uniform.

It's not for protection, but just looking cool. In some states you don't ever need a helmet

I am Italian and my family and a kot of these from an our family memeber that was in war ... But sadly idk why they threw em away also with their uniforms,like my mom said they were a lot.. They coukd go in a lot of museums..

I thought when I was in school, the German helmet was spikes because it was a weapon like a bayonet. German soldiers could be trained in head butt attack techniques for close quarters.
The Germans created the best decorative and best protective design helmets.

I hope German reuse pickelhaube for ceremony or parade. Their helmet today are not fit, because their helmet too modern for such tradition.
You can sometimes still see the , Helm mit Spitze ' ( official term) still in Germany. Not used by official Personal, but by socalled, Historical Citizens Guards', since 1849 no more part of german armed forces
