This is stunning visualization of data, a laudable execution of tons of research I presume. This demystifies the water flow using topography, geology, and hydrology, thank you.
Really detailed video. Thanks! I'm fascinated by the Corryvreckan and Grey Dogs and travelled them in a boat years ago. I found the grey dogs actually more terrifying but the whole thing is breathtaking.
Great tidal flow explanation. I dived the Buttress pinnacle (1994) from dive boat Porpoise, the pinnacle itself was covered in Elephant's Ear Sponge, a memorable, well planned and executed dive. Also had many dives through the Grey Dogs at great various states of tide, it must be noted that myself and others I dived with were all experienced drift divers having many logged dives from the Cuan Sound to Falls of Lora to name but a few. Thanks again for posting.
I read of a diver exploring the buttress. All was calm, and then within a few seconds he noticed his bubbles were going into the dark. He sprinted to the light.
Thank you for sharing this, Our sailing trip was meant to be a kind of roots trip for my husband ( McNeill). We weren’t brave , just unlucky. We were in the wrong place and the wrong time. A force nine gale in a small sailboat in proximity to the whirlpool is no joke!
Safehaven Marine built a service vessel they called "Thunderchild 2", which they took to Corryvreckan Maelstrom, the vid has excellent Drone footage of the vessel moving through the Whirlpools and colliding currents, in one shot the vessel is bow facing into the current with the throttles set at eight knots, the twenty two metre quad engine vessel is just sitting there not moving, and despite the current, all around the vessel is the constant churning power of the Maelstrom.
People who sail , boat do not ware life jackets, but do have them available Unless it’s night, a storm and on deck at night . Zero visibility, fog or think they might go in the water
Water going down a plug hole is a permanent whirlpool. Ocean whirlpools are temporary/transient due to the ever changing movement of the whole body of water, and no hole to drain the ocean out of. Whirlpools in Corryvreckan can be seen forming and reforming.
The spin cycles both simulate (are suggestive of) the maelstrom 'Charybdis' and help dry your clothes out and so have significant use value and the music is quite charming I find - though it appears your knots vary.

Many thanks, I appreciate the comments.
Thank you for such a well executed explanation that a lay person can understand. I love learning more about the why and how things work.
Thank you, much appreciated.
Absolutely fascinating. Thanks for making that available.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fascinating. Been there in June this year and made a boat trip. Explanations on the tour were good but this video shows more details.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
I have kayaked both and I found the Grey Dogs as challenging as the Corryvreckan as the in former the water flow seems to change direction more often.
Very interesting video ! I think you could add a brief explanation of the geological genesys of the area

Many thanks for the comments, I was out on Porpoise II a few times but not as a diver.

Just the video I wanted, showing what it's like below the surface water.
Thankyou
Glad you enjoyed it.

That was very interesting, thanks. I piloted a 9.5 m powerful RIB through the Corrywreckan, I can tell you it was spectacular and awesome.
I can imagine!
This is one of the most beautiful visualizations I have ever seen...thank you so much for showing my brain the how and why of these waters' behavior!
Glad you enjoyed it!
As a sea kayaker, I’m rather glad I can’t see what’s below me.
Yes, sometimes you're better not knowing!
Ah yes … Davy Jones locker! We all see THAT eventually, kayak or no kayak ☠
so it's more like a deep canyon with multiple deepspots . instead of just a hole in the seabed like it's often showed
thanks for explanation :D
I presume that pinnacle will wear down with the action of the tide, over the years.
Been there for a while tho …
Doubt it. Your cold water tap flows faster and it doesn't wear away. Plus the pinnacle is covered in anemones.
Excellent video and explanation.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
as a marine geologist who spent half his career visualising multibeam sonar data, I commend this visualisation
Thank you, much appreciated!
Fascinating! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice model, just missing the cardinal point all the time. N-E-S-W
My idea of paradise ,,Thanks

Yes, the drone footage is impressive, it's quite a boat! You just don't want your drone to end up in the salt water!
And what's the position of the whirlpool?
At 04:00 more or less, no life jackets worn aboard the boat is that a component of the thrill?
People who sail , boat do not ware life jackets, but do have them available

I hope he didn't quit :(
No I'm still here, I just haven't had time to film recently.
@@hebrideanwild :0 Thank god
@@hebrideanwild I love your channel alot
Yeh, turbulent waters right-enough, but no sign of the famous 'whirlpool' though.

No life jackets worn on that boat. Surely that is against regulations if that is a charter boat.
The spinning map is quite irritating. The music is even worse. Couldn't watch, unfortunately.
You probably need to increase your levels of gaba.
