Why I Bought a Crossfit Bike for Cardio

  • To be fair, these older bikes were used for rehab purposes mostly, but Crossfit has popularized them once again. I noticed recently that I was largely inactive outside my few hours lifting each week. I've been trying to figure out a way to increase my activity level and be as efficient about it as possible. I think I found the answer.

    Since not many people read the description, these older bikes were used for rehab purposes mostly, but Crossfit has popularized them once again. I also realize the seat is too low in the first clip. It was the first time I sat on it so it was at the previous owners height. I raised the seat right after, as you can see in the talking portion of the video.

      Brandon Campbell Diamond Lol I can understand how you are ridiculously busy, but to suggest you don't have 5 seconds in your day to raise the seat is a bit ridiculous.

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  6 років тому +14

      Charles lol I didn’t mean it like that. I literally hadn’t used it before I filmed that first clip so I didn’t realize it was too low until after. I didn’t care enough to raise it to refilm:)

    • @charles8557
      @charles8557 6 років тому +3

      Ah fair enough, I kinda thought you might not have raised the seat on purpose to avoid an awkward angle with your arms since you're such a big guy. Have you found that pushing and pulling with your arms is difficult with the seat higher?

    If you have only enough money for one device, then the Airdyne is the one I would buy. Older models are better (there was a time when the handlebars would crack because of metal fatigue, but when it happened to me I took the handlebars to a local welder and they were fixed up fine -- no problems since). The keys for the digital timer are the machines weak points. I have had mine for about 40 years. It is uncomfortable and I hate it sometimes and take a break by going to the gym's treadmill, but it is the one I use when I need result (17 minutes plus every morning). I am closer to 80 than 70. The one exercise that I could never do is the push (hurts too much). Place your feet on the foot rests and then using open palms push on the handles trying to achieve a load factor of 4 or 5 for five minutes (the late Mike Webster of the Steelers could perform this exercise for 45 minutes). As my physician (he was physician to the Steelers) explained to me, the Airdyne was the only cardio machine that exercised above and below the heart. Other exercises include a crossover, place feet on rest and then place both hands on one handle (rowing) and then raise the load factor to 4 or 5 for 1 or 2 minutes. Then changes sides and repeat. Then return to hands and feet. I use the Airdyne in conjunction with YoTube bike riding videos. Diet together with the Airdyne produces good result.

    My wife found one of these set out on trash day and I didn't think it was worth it. Fixed the monitor and replaced the pedals and it was good to go. Didn't realize what a solid find it was until this video.

    My Rogue Echo Bike is built like a Sherman tank and it gasses me out in about 5 minutes. I got one for the house because I used the bike at my gym last summer to get ripped. I really do attribute my leanness to after-weights sessions on the Echo Bike.

    I discovered Tabata training probably 30 years ago? I discovered the Schwinn Airdyne 20+ years ago. I do not always do "sprint" (or Tabata) training,, sometimes I use the Airdyne for Cooper Aerobic Points. Regardless, the Schwinn Airdyne fits for whatever aerobic/cardio training I am doing.

    I am disabled and I can't run or walk for long periods of time, so I just bought one for less than a $100 dollars. I got it on Black Friday from walmart and I also own a rowing machine. The rowing machine has been great but I want to burn more fat and also, simulate walking, since I can't walk for long periods of time this bike will help with motion and resistance while keeping my butt in the seat and taking the load of my legs. So, I am ready to continue my way to health. I smoke and I have been feeling breathing better and smoking less also. No diet, no nothing just the desire to make some changes in my life. I am not getting any younger. So, let's see.

    I jacked up my hip running and needed a way to add a decent amount of cardio to fill the void. For whatever reason, between battle ropes and the AD6 I bought, my hip healed in record time. These are amazing alternate cardio methods if you can't run... and even if you can run, these burn more calories faster and the results are way better...I stick by the heavy bag, battle ropes and the air bikes.

    Airdyne bikes are what they are called. Not crossfit bikes. These bikes are used for many sports today. A lot of fighters use them for cutting weight because they use a lot of movement for when the fighter is drained physically.

    When I watched you training I actually wondered - what BPM can you reach with this one? Now assume one is mostly used to run for cardio and rarely to do spinning. Say I usually run 10km which I used to accomplish in a leisure tempo with 150-160 pulse, which normally takes me about 50 min. Can I ever reach this BPM on this thing? It looks kinda more attractive to me than the spinning bike because it offers some concurrent arm work. Still wondering, is it really a cardio thing and would it actually come at expense of the possibility of attaining a constant moderate BPM over a time? Thanks for the video.

    I bought a Rogue Echo bike. It is the most evil, wicked piece of exercise equipment I've ever used. I've tried Versa Climbers, Concept II rowers, etc.... Nothing beats the assault type bikes in my opinion. Nothing I've used can take me to the brink faster. The tabata's are already loaded...20/10, 10/20, distance, time you name it. Oh, and it's built like a TANK. My great grandchildren will be cursing my name if they use it, because it will be around LONG after I'm gone. It's worth every penny. Want a great full body, fat burning workout? Combine an assault bike with kettlebells.....

    • @tidefanyankee2428
      @tidefanyankee2428 4 роки тому

      I'll second what Brandon says about using it for a warm up. It's easy on the joints too. One great workout/warm up I use is to go 30 secs at a decent pace with arms and legs. Then 30 seconds just arms (put your feet on the pegs), then 30 seconds with just legs and finish with 30 seconds with arms and legs. Done. You can increase the times/intensity if you want to use it as a different kind of HIIT training.
      It's a piece of equipment you'll love.....and hate.

      comparing the elliptical versus airdyne bike is like comparing an NBA team to a junior high school basketball team. see the difference? it wouldn't matter if it was the worst team in the league, they would still beat a team of junior high school all starts. that is how much better the airdyne bike is compared to the elliptical. Get rid of your elliptical and get an airdyne bike.

    you are 100% wrong in your statement "used for rehab purposes mostly". I have been a kickboxer before Bruce Lee's death and have been using this bike, as virtually ALL Boxers and mixed martial artists have done forever, for over 30 years. This machine is THE machine for all fighters - we don't f around with weak equipment.

    • @BasementBrandon
      @BasementBrandon  6 років тому +1

      While it's used for other purposes, rehab is by far and away the most prevalent.

    • @kendokickboxing1356

      Brandon, I have never, ever seen the airdyne bike used for rehab. Ever. In fact, this bike would be too hard to use for rehab, although it would be excellent as far as I am concerned. If people used it for rehab, then the would be in better shape than before their injury. I do not know anyone who owns one excluding myself.
