Are they tears of joy because Dan did something somewhat successfully, or are they tears of agony because, even though it got in the air, he still managed to fuck everything over?
Tries to make a space plane. 1. Oh control surfaces, forgets the tail plane 2. Oh I forgot the rudder thingy doesn't put control surfaces on it 3. Forgets air-intake 4. only 5 minutes in =(
Forgets to implement the space part of a spaceplane Half of the fuel is oxidizer which is useless to jets, wonders why there's only half liquid fuel Uses a rocket for braking instead of a drag chute Steers by using yaw instead of roll and pitch
if a boeing took of at full speed it would decintigrate but this is ksp so fuck logic also i dont think he gives a shit seeing as i said i dont give a shit. twice.....
Skybluex Well 90% Thrust yes. But thrust does not equal full speed. I think the takeoff speed is around 120kias for most jet passenger craft, although it varies. Not even close to the maximum speed.
Yea, maybe I'm just thinking about the 737 NG. I seen somewhere that, in takeoff, they go to 80% or 90% N1 and then engage TO/GA, which basically pushes engine power to maximum. And the takeoff speed is usually around 125-140, depending on the takeoff weight
I was thinking the exact same thing! It would be great if you could create colonies, don't you think? Then it could be colonize every planet. That would be awesome. And gather resources and stuff... That'd be awesome.
Having the rudder and the aerilons on the same buttons is just a recipe for disaster. Map the rudder to Q and E (turning on ground), and the aerilons to A and D (rolling). You'll also need elevators mapped to W and S (pointing the nose up or down). The elevators and the rudder usually make up the tail, while the aerilons are on the wingtips, with the flaps (which you should also have) closer to the fuselage.
CrimsonGamer99 that's funny I didn't know there was an airfield out there. When I was testing my space plane I just flew around and decided to land in a field some where. After I saw this video I hoped into my space plane in on my second try landed with my plane still intact.
Who wants to tell Dan about the SAS he could have enabled to keep himself steady? It works for planes just fine, though setting it to prograde is much smoother that stability assist, ('(- b- )' instead of '(- -)', and yes that's the best I can indicate the icons XP Damn you Strikethrough formatting) but does make pulling up harder. Also, he'd have far more luck with landing if he didn't turn on the brakes before hitting dirt, since they don't seem to be engaging, probably to stop him doing a front flip. HINT: Right click on -everything- in the VAB/SPH, it could bring up some helpful options that will make things work smoother.
DuskandDey Prograde SAS for planes only really works if it has virtually 0 Angle of Attack, otherwise it'll just cause the nose to drop all the way as it tries to chase the prograde vector, till you're pointing straight down. Brakes before landing can work though; I did it myself a lot when i was landing and taking off a plane from inside a mountain range for a damn ass contract. Only caveat is that you NEED to have both the left and right wheels touch down at the exact same time, or the differential braking would just spiral you into the ground and pretty explosions abound.
DuskandDey I see. I did want to use my X52 for KSP, but I found the sensitivity and controller lag hard to fine tune like I usually do with other flight sims. Resigning myself to the keyboard works pretty well, and trimming suffices for the level of (atmospheric)planes I have at my current career level.

Next challenge, take off, get into orbit, circle the planet once then land at the same runway you took off from. As in, you fly in a perfectly straight line around the planet, but you have to get into orbit.

Addison Kennedy Well, in GTAV he's not a terrible pilot... Now, if I heard the plane was being BUILT by him, or the airport was being MANAGED by him... I'd take a ferry. Don't care if it takes months to get anywhere, I'd go on a cruise god dammit!
Anyone else watching this thinking Dan is just James May's intelligence, Richard Hammonds recklessness and Jeremy Clarksons speed and power kink all rolled into one 😂😂
HeathderandArenter HA Nerd³ is actually pretty decent at KSP. Everyone just thinks that it's super easy to build and steer planes because they've watched 1 or 2 Scott Manley videos.
This is an active demonstration of why deltawing aircraft are not often used compared to traditional fixed wing composition of using a separate horizontal stabilisers. The amount of control it affords is quite small in comparison and generates more turbulence around the control surfaces (meaning in practice, the stalling is more likely due to uncontrolled air flows over the wing surfaces). Eurofighter travels at such speeds that it needs A.I to control the air surfaces to stop it dropping out of the air on a simple patrol.
To translate from Internet lingo, since your new to the UA-cam, Scott Manley is a UA-camr who is great at Kerbal Space Program, what Dan (A.K.A. NerdCubed) is playing. He isn't doing great clearly.
iKavix basically a religion... ok but seriously i have been inspired to learn about physics and specifically orbital mechanics. he knows so much random shit and hes awesome. learnt so much from him. i recommend you watch his videos. :)
Clicking T turns on a stabilizers, which is pretty useful when trying not to spin-out and die. Also, in the bottom left of the ship building area you can turn on indicators for center of mass and lift, so you don't have to guess.
I think the shock waves come about as a result of exceeding the local speed of sound (LSS - aka sound barrier) at Mean Sea Level altitude: can calculate the LSS using this formula: LSS (knots) = 38.94 x sqrt Temperature in Kelvin. Which is 660kts at MSL. This changes with altitude. You need to multiply the speed in m/s by approximately 2 to get speed in knots. So 100m/s = 194kts. The speed of sound occurs (at ground level) at 339m/s. Shockwaves lead to loss of control over the control surfaces. Planes do need a tail (a vertical stabiliser) to resolve the forces laterally, otherwise it will spin out of control. + for reference there is a difference between speed and throttle; a B747 takes off at full throttle but is perfectly stable flying at 180 kts (93m/s): main wings producing lift and tail plane wings (horizontal stabilisers) used to control pitch - vitally important. All videos are absolutely hilarious though. :)
