The doctor is a narcissist, plain and simple. He gets satisfaction out of watching grateful new moms with their ‘miracle’ babies- knowing all along, the babies are his.
This is based on a true story. There is a fertility doctor who does this. It's unprecedented so, to my knowledge, he hasn't been charged. He has donated a lot and it turns out he has passed on Lupus.
I'm fascinated by the fact that every time someone says the name of the doctor it's been dubbed over. Sometimes very poorly. What could have changed between filming and going to air? Did they find a doctor with the same name at the last minute? It couldn't have changed too much because you can see they're saying roughly the same thing in some close ups where they dub over the original line. After hitting up IMDB it seems the name was originally "Gilbert" but was changed to "Delbert" at some point in syndication but sometimes the original audio comes up as "Gilbert" while the location card that flashes during the "duh-duh" still says "Delbert". There's no reason given but the only thing that could necessitate a change like this had to be an actual doctor with that name not wanting to be associated with the episode. Maybe there's something else but that's the only thing I can think of.
Every person deserves to know who his siblings are, they didn't choose to severe ties. And yes NYC has millions of people but these children would be similar in age and as siblings share many commonalties. That narrows the chances significantly of their meeting at some point over the course of say 60 years. What about the moral hazard of enabling two people to unintentionally engage in incest?
I still remember watching a documentry about the sperm donation industry and they had a donor who was donating 3 times a week because he was a popular request. His main complaint is that it put a damper on his relationships for the past few years because he couldn't sleep with his girlfriends so that he could have enough juice to donate. The place he was donating to though was like a brokerage for sperm and sent the stuff around the US and a few other countries. Some of the other fathers had like 200 kids all over because they were considered desirable.
Alright, I know it is a serious show, but it feels like a SNL sketch. They go back and tell the parents the truth, and the parents are happy the sperm is from a doctor.
The colors are really.... great in this scene/episode. I don't know what it is. The analog recording and it's diluted colors.... just looks really good.
I was interested in the CF info- a childhood friend of mine was one of those unlucky 4- both parents were carriers - he passed away of complications when he was 17....
One of the things watching this episode that I've come to appreciate far more is that when originally given the news about the pregnancy being terminated the doctor says that he feels for the parents more than the cops could possibly imagine. Brutal foreshadowing laid out plain as day early in the episode.
It's amazing the level of production TV programs have achieved since they began. I mean production in how well developed the writing, the stories, the acting; everything. Totally targeted at enticing the viewer to watch and keep watching, and sell advertising time.

They must have changed the name of the doctor at some point. Pretty much every time someone says “Dr. Delbert” you can tell it’s been redubbed in post.
1:261:33 and 2:24 they dubbed over Logan’s lines whenever he says Delbert. You can hear a slight change in audio quality, and the background noise gets drowned out. Interesting, could be that when they first filmed the scene that Logan maybe pronounced Delberts name wrong. By the mouth flaps sounds like he says Dillbert.

You'd get drunk even if you take a SIP!!
LOL
3:14 where's the "dun dun"?
"Dr. Delbert..."
"I talked to Barzini..." (Moe Green)
That was me. Both times.
6:52 Jill Hennessy was so beautiful and a short-haired brunette.
That's gonna be one hellva child support check he'll get
This is based on a true story.
I am so glad someone else noticed this, I thought I was going crazy
Based on a true story. A doctor used his own for years
I hear that a lot if not all the episodes are based on true stories.
1:09 love how she looks straight into the camera
So did they change the name of the Doctor? It really sounds like Logan is dubbed whenever he mentions Dr Delbert
It was originally Gilbert.
Yah, watch the previous two clips from this episode. You'll see the same thing.
I didn't catch that until you pointed it out! Excellent catch!
So why they changed it?
@@rand2002 jewish name is Gilbert.
That second doctor actor is on the good wife/fight as a lawyer its cool to see him younger.
Logan was also on that show
Specifically, he plays David Lee, a family law specialist.
Gosh I miss Kincaid. Her out of nowhere death is heartbreaking.
Same
i wish this was on Netflix just like NCIS, i wish they would have done a crossover
Maybe the best Law & Order episode.
I'd love to see full episodes of law and order posted to UA-cam.
1:12 i have to say they look adorable together omaii
She's right...she owes it ALL to Dr. Delbert
That guy at Hudson Labs has enough good booze for a good long while. If anyone, he's the real winner in this episode.
"he gave us dennis" Imagine having a miracle child and deciding to name them Dennis
Lol
Briscoe: "I wonder which mommy is gonna teach him to smoke and drink."
Logan: "... and shave."
XD
Unfortunately, this part was cut out...
Yeah, I remember they were walking out from the women's apartment and said those dialogue. I guess it's a bit judgemental for today's standards.
It should have been kept in
@@123haninhk I always took it as their comeback on the mother's negativity about men.
UA-cam would shut down the video for homophobic jokes🤣🤣.
@@clashfan2875 yeah thats pretty much it.
6:25 his expression, he's not surprised at all 😂😂😂
Jordan Cavanaugh!!! #CrossingJordan!!!! I love her
Thank you!! I was trying to remember the name of the show!! I loved it too!
Annastasia McAlear same!
Alright, I know it is a serious show, but it feels like a SNL sketch. They go back and tell the parents the truth, and the parents are happy the sperm is from a doctor.
It's based on a real case. SNL did a skit with John Goodman on the real case.
There's quite a few real cases of fertility doctors that used their own sperm, this episode was probably loosely based on one or more of them.
If a fertility doctor is introduced in act 1, then he must be baby daddy by act 3.
- Checkovs Doctor probably
Thats xactly my point.
Then the laugh. 😆
I miss jerry. Wonderful actor.
The colors are really.... great in this scene/episode. I don't know what it is. The analog recording and it's diluted colors.... just looks really good.
2:37 It’s like bad science fiction. And I should know since I was in Robocop 3.
Not her character no
"Crazy Adventures with Sperm" is the plot of at least 10% of the episodes of the original Law and Order, and it at least 70% of the episodes of SVU.
One of the best episodes
I was interested in the CF info- a childhood friend of mine was one of those unlucky 4- both parents were carriers - he passed away of complications when he was 17....
One of my faverite episodes. Thank you for posting.
Man, svu really took the good episodes from the OG show
Yeah
All L&O shows (Original, SVU, Criminal Intent, etc) like to recycle plots and actors.
*And* there's the whole "ripped from the headlines" basis for episodes in the franchise.
Are we going to ignore the clear changes of the name Delbert every time it’s said you can tell a bit was cut out to put Delbert in 1:27
One of the things watching this episode that I've come to appreciate far more is that when originally given the news about the pregnancy being terminated the doctor says that he feels for the parents more than the cops could possibly imagine. Brutal foreshadowing laid out plain as day early in the episode.
Rip Jerry Orbach
This was such a good episode.
I never tire of Lenny's cynicism
the fact this is literally a true story is insanneee
It's amazing the level of production TV programs have achieved since they began. I mean production in how well developed the writing, the stories, the acting; everything. Totally targeted at enticing the viewer to watch and keep watching, and sell advertising time.
As a J/C shipper, I love the scene at the restaurant, where he says she'll be paying for the meal. That's not something a boss says to a subordinate... :D
No but Claire's face in the thumbnail gets me every time 😂😂😂
I'm also a J/C shipper ❤️❤️
@@electroskates2434 Squeeeeee!!! Miss that one, for sure. Did you have any other L&O 'ships? I'm also a Mike and Connie shipper.
@@kirstinmorrell I guess the others as well that happened like Connie/Mike snd Liz/Logan but I don't know alot about them so I'm so J/C 😍 And recently I found a site that had *all* the proof that J/C had an affair!
@@electroskates2434 share please?
@@GosieKin It's called evidence of the affair, but it's only available on the internet archive now. Go to the law & order subreddit and you'll see a few posts on this topic, I believe linked to in the side navigation bar. Someone took the list and got video clips of almost everything.
Ahhh the 80s and 90s and the AIDS crisis. I lived through that era.
They must have changed the name of the doctor at some point. Pretty much every time someone says “Dr. Delbert” you can tell it’s been redubbed in post.
Was this based on the actual Dr. Cline case?
1:26 1:33 and 2:24 they dubbed over Logan’s lines whenever he says Delbert. You can hear a slight change in audio quality, and the background noise gets drowned out. Interesting, could be that when they first filmed the scene that Logan maybe pronounced Delberts name wrong. By the mouth flaps sounds like he says Dillbert.
I caught the differences
You can tell the "quality" of his voice CHANGES
GREAT episode
This doctor was on straight demon timing the whole episode 😈😈
Jill Hennessy was the best Assistant District Attorney.
I agree with you.
I know a couple who had 3 children and found out they were CF carriers when their youngest child was born with CF. Thankfully he is still alive and healthy at 30. Their other two children were lucky and are not even carriers.
What a vile monster that doctor is.
New York is One Big Happy Family!
1:28: Anyone know why the audio for "Delbert" sounds like an obvious insert?
Old L&O is the best! Watching my 2nd fav ADA talk about spunk was a little hot.
Yeah, that'll make you hungry for dinner at a fancy restaurant.
just watched the rest of the episode and the voiceover has me dying! they really weren't able to pronounce the Dr's name so they had to do it in post 🤣 0:10 2:20 4:16 5:05 and then 1:30 couldn't they just reshoot the scene?
I don't think it was a pronounciation issue. I think it's more likely they ran into legal trouble with a real Dr Gilbert (original name) ..
Okay, I thought I was crazy!
Dr. Gil- I mean "Delbert", wasn't too smart about falsifying records.
Why isn't this on Netflix!!!!!!!!
It was, but it is gone along with SVU as well.
Its on Peacock
But why didn’t he use fake IDs to make them seem like different donor samples? It seems like such an obvious way to hide it. I guess he just felt he didn’t need to bother?
There's probably a database that traces the ID number back to a person, maybe he had to create multiple identifies the regular way.
Where do I get to watch these episodes? These old ones are the best
The real life doctor who also did this was his own daughter Gyno doctor just imagine that
That’s gonna be one hell of a family reunion.🤪
I feel like the Delbert dub should be a meme, that's just so awkward to listen to. "so, you think Dr. D e l b e r t is more than double dipping?"
that dubbing was smooth..
lol
Did they change delberts name after they filmed the original scenes or something? Cuz each time they say Delbert it sounds super off
I think this based off a real case. OH MY GOD!!! I'M SHOCKED
It is.
The Cecil Jacobson case.
You are quite correct.
A lot of Law and Order episodes are
They usually are but they don't specifically refer to that event it's based on probably for legal reasons.
Claire wasn't exactly the sharpest knife in that restaurant, was she?
rip
I just noticed they mentioned Ed McMahon showing up on his doorstep with a check. I read somewhere that even though I remember Ed Mcmahon commercials for PCH, it never happened. 🤷♀️
All of these test could been done and over in minutes with a visit to the Maury show.
This is like the main plot of the Fox show "Almost Family" where a young woman finds out her fertility doctor dad is behind a fraud after she, an only child, finds out she has siblings.
I was going to say the same thing! In fact, I've watched a few episodes of Almost Family. 😐🤔
I love the thumb nail!
I'm guessing there was a last minute name-change for Dr. "DELBERT". The ADR goes nuts.
This clip cut out the best part:
“I wonder which mommy is gonna teach him to smoke; or drink.”
😆
In recent years there has been a doctor caught in Denmark doing the same thing & fathered 60+ babies. More recently a huge scandal in the Netherlands but this time they have traced 200+ to a donor who used multiple clinics, false names, had been caught earlier & the court ordered him to stop but then he started being more devious to continue. Was active over 15+ years from student days.
I figured he was the donor very early on in the episode
The title helps.
