This problem with iron faulting and saltwater interference is why I chose not to purchase the Manticore at this time. I tested one for a week and even though I was impressed I will not purchase one until Minelab addresses these issues. I will say iron faulting is the biggest issue Minelab needs to address across the board in all their products.
A steel bottlecap in good shape has high conductive properties and the fact that the manticore kept it in ferrous 2D when in all metal is a pluss. When you started to disc out the ferrous 2D it saw less ferrous and the conductive properties became more of the total. This is great… if it is a coin together with a steel fragment you want the coin to show up. This actually show how good the conductive vs ferrous recognition the manticore has.
Sure looks to be a bug in the custom lower ferrous limits editor. So for ferrous limits presets, there’s 14 different presets of the upper ferrous limits, in addition to 0 (off), and 9 lower ferrous limits presets (0= off)… When you’re in the custom ferrous limits editor, I see upper ferrous limit ranges from 0 to 25, and -25 to 0 for lower….the manual doesn’t show these ranges at all…..anyway, without going into the ferrous limits editor, selecting one of the factory preset lower ferrous limits should mask most all crown caps….for the really rusted ones, an upper ferrous limits preset will mask it out.
Very interesting. I suspect you are seeing the conductive part of the bottle cap when your move up the ferrous limits. I suspect the target trace should be showing the bottle cap has ferrous and non-ferrous metal no mater the setting of the ferrous limits. I don't like how the Manticore handles Canadian coins (ferrous coins). Minelab needs to take another look at how the CTX 3030 could find ferrous coins by looking for the conductive part only. It showed 2 targets one for the ferrous content and one for the the conductive content. I would then swith to another mode and use sizing target trace to see the pattern caused by the ferrous and non ferrous content of the coin. Most bottle caps had a completly different pattern then the ferrous coin with a conductive coating. Amazing that you found this. Thanks.

Why would that have an affect on the Target Trace? We have that 'Feature' on the Lower Ferrous Limits too. The Recovery Speed is also making a change to the Target Trace. That's understandable with a reduction of electromagnetic force. Initially there were two Traces plotted, one on the non-ferrous line and one above. He then lowered the Upper Ferrous Limit and the higher of the two Traces dropped to the non-ferrous line. Then he increased the Recovery Speed and it plotted one Trace. Recovery Speed 2. Upper Ferrous limits 10. Lower Ferrous limits 3. Changed Upper Ferrous Limits: Recovery Speed 2. Upper Ferrous limits 5. Lower Ferrous limits 3. Restored original FL, and increased the RS. Not sure what to make of it. Tried it on mine, similar results with air tests.. I do know before I dug the super rusted out caps, they had a center line response and changed to iron tone out of the hole. I think the iron leaches out to a large patch. Especially in damp beach sand.

@@mowerdog I just finished replicating your Ferrous Limits Trace 'feature'-failure, but I'm demonstrating it in a completely different way and at the same time demonstrating a non-ferrous audio response when a 1 gallon steel paint can tracks along the non-ferrous center line. I have applied 100% Ferrous limits. What I was describing to you a couple of days ago, was about creating a non-ferrous limits to help alert me when the a non-ferrous Trace entered a Ferrous Limits region. I now believe that the 'feature' is limiting us from fine tuning what we define as ferrous and what we want to define as non-ferrous. The ferrous Trace is following the Ferrous limits into the non-ferrous region causing "False Positives". Some non-ferrous Trace migrate into the Ferrous Limits region, we have no tools to alerted us. I want to set an alarm or special tone, if the non-ferrous Trace moves outside it's non-ferrous range causing a "False Negative. I'm so pissed right now about the ‘feature’. I've written a lengthy reply and I've stated as much in my intro. I don't want to come off too aggressive, no one like to work with a jerk and I want to work with a Minelab engineer. I just need some time to cool off. There's a lot that needs improving, that can be accomplished with software updates. I'm going to sit on my reply, calm down and tone my language down. I discussed this on a Manticore Facebook group and after a long debate on the first day of posting with other members I was expelled from the group. The reason being I had a different opinion to a comment made by one of the admin of the group! I should have known that this was a sensitive contentious topic as when I first submitted the post it wasn’t accepted or rejected just deleted so after resubmission another admin accepted the post. Ever had the feeling that this phenomenon is being censored? The upper and lower limits behave differently. Fine to adjust upper ferrous limits in situ but have no lower ferrous limits or just one line greyed out and leave. I believe this to be a now known issue and wouldn’t be surprised if Minelab will either confirm this or provide an update in the future. So much for sharing useful information with other users 😂
Can’t argue with that but it’s the best detector that I’ve used. Just wish there was more freely available information on ferrous limits. Understand those and you’ve mastered it!

i don´t dig bottlecaps, even the rusted ones. For me Manticore is better than the Equinox in rejecting them. Sometimes the sound is completely cut off and sometimes there are some chirping, but easly recognizable as something rejected by iron bias (or iron discrimination). This happens with all kind of bottlecaps: new or rusted doesn´t matter. If i rarely dig a BC is when e i have a smooth and deep signal, and always they are very rusted BC (i learned how to spot by sound anyway) So i wonder: Could be just a matter of alloy? Could you make a video with different BC at different levels? (rusted, grinded, bended, etc...) Could be very usefull to understand.
I wouldn't even try to use ferrous limits to reject a bottle cap anyway for the reasons given on p28 of the manual (they are a complex target). I use 5 Regions all tones and reject bottle caps by their sound and their target trace. In high trash areas I don't even listening for the bottle cap tones any more but for the good tones in between them. 👍
Where is your sensitivity set at ? It may be like an overload reading . I have left mine with the factory presets . I only hunt in the beach modes low conductor or beach surf . In beach surf a bottle cap is so ugly on the 2D screen I never dig them. On low conductor beach they look better and I have dug a few. I don't try to mask the iron. I just don't dig it .
I wouldn't dig that anyway. But you can always just run 5 region & customize the tones so the caps sound crappy. A lot of people on the various groups are saying the Manti performs great with stock settings especially on the ferrous limits, and this video proves it. Before you changed settings that cap was showing up right where it belonged.
Might be tracking other elements in cap eliminated what you asked but tracking other parts of cap. Have nox 800 haven't been able to purchase a Manticore .Someone higher up at minelab should be put back to sweeping floors.Thanks for vid.
The Legend's bottle cap reject works fantastic in a machine at 33% the price of the Manticore. I wonder how long it's going to take Minelab to fix this?

That is not an issue. Especially if you take a nail and sneak up on it with iron discrimination to just reject it. Then when you add most any non ferrous on top, below or beside the nail most any machine will hit that coin. When your in the field you don't have that option of knowing just how much disc you need on any certain nail. So for the most cases the answer is yes.
Its not only the bottle cap.. anything tagging/blobbing at the bottom lower ferrous line (like yours) it will follow the line even if you increase or decrease the lower ferrous limit setting.
@@mowerdog hopefully but in all honesty i dont know if its a bug or working as intended lol.. for now i didnt use the lower iron filter.. i just set it to 0... coz i didnt see much difference unlike upper ferrous limit setting.. for now im just concerntrating on the upper ferrous limit
Maybe a better question here. If you max out lower ferrous limits across the board in custom screen, exit go to detect screen where does cap show up on screen, and can it be heard tonally?
Sorry TNS. I just saw your reply. If I open the lower limits all the way up across the bottom the cap hits at the bottom with a nice trace. Then when I raise the lower limit all the way up across the board, it hits right at the #12 line with a nice trace. So wherever I set the lower disc limit the cap will hit right there from the get go.
@mowerdog I found an issue with the 800 when it first came out ( with large US silver ) and posted a video saying the Equinox was broken. They contacted me and asked for another video showing the problem. They fixed it.
I know. I was wondering why I was hitting bottle caps. So I thought I would just bump my lower disc up to reject them a little more. Then I noticed this. In the field I took for granted they were notched out. Or at least most of them..... But yet I dug several. So now I think I'm onto the issue. I was wondering if this was a small clue to why others dig a lot of nails? I tried but none of my nails would do it. It's just the lower limit.
I'm exploring zero Ferrous Limits Custom with All Metal. I'm curious if the Target Trace plots differently than when a Ferrous Limit is applied. I'm also looking at the Audio Themes to see if they alter the Target Trace. It appears to me that there could be a different Trace with the Ferrous Limits Custom is set to 'True' zero and using All Metal. I've come to no conclusions at this time. If you set Ferrous Limits Preset to zero, Minelab leaves a small region at the top, it's not grayed out to alert you. I don't know what purpose that serves, might it be a software graphics error? Ferrous Limit is still being applied. One would think that an iron tone and red bar indication would be eliminated, but that's not what I'm discovering. Tks! GL👨🦯HH
Alright. Here’s response from Minelab Engineer. VERBATim Hi David, Thanks for sharing - I’ve seen this one. Believe it or not, this is expected behaviour for weaker low conductor targets. Equinox has done the same thing since update 2, the only difference is that it doesn’t have an ID map to visually show it doing it to the user. If you wave the target closer to the coil it will stop doing it. It is a feature that helps keep depth on weak low conductors in mineralised ground - especially important for the thin hammered coins they have in the UK and Europe.
This 'feature' is for the UK and European soil that has coke. ("..especially important...in the UK and Europe.") This feature is preventing me from fully utilizing the Ferrous Limits as intended. This feature doesn't work well with a user defined non-ferrous region. This feature actually causes False Positives, Iron Falsing. I would like this 'feature' to have it's own On/Off 'feature'. Thank you for your time and consideration of modifying the 'feature'. GL👨🦯HH
This 'feature' may be in part the cause of iron falsing and saltwater falsing, false positives? Minelab demonstrate to us Americans how the 'feature' benefits coke ridden UK and European soil and at the same time reduces iron falsing and saltwater falsing. Minelab can you provide me with a ground balance validation protocol? I'm presently embarking on creating a test protocol to validate if the Manticore ground balance is working or defective. How do I separate the 'feature' from "acceptable iron/beach falsing" vs spurious falsing and know that I have properly ground balanced the Manticore? There are so many of us with Manticores having issues with falsing. I didn't consider that there was a 'feature' that may in part be the cause of the iron falsing and Surf & Seawater falsing, "False Positives". It's well understood that if your ground balance is not set properly that spurious false positives occur with certain soil conditions. During testing yesterday, I had to lower my Sensitivity to between 10 and 17 to calm the spurious falsing, that may in part be caused by the 'feature'. Minelab please provide a video demonstration to help me showcase the 'feature' and how we should learn to accept the iron and saltwater falsing. Pretty sure my etrac didn't do that? I sold it so I can't test it. But after running it 10 years I would have noticed.....

The Manticore is awesome. Does it have issues? Yes. Is it worth $1700. No.

I buy machines like this so I have options to mold around my style of detecting. Otherwise, I would swing a Compadre and call it good.

You should to rotate target in different positions against the coil… it also change target ID and location into ferrous limits…
In this test it wouldn't matter if I rotated on the cap. In the ground it's different.

did you try notching out the area while not swinging the cap over it to see if it successfully works or not?
Yes. It rejects it for a sweep or two then shows right back up on the line as in the video.

Whatever elements are in the cap there will be some area where it rejects it totally. But it doesn't.

I'm exploring zero Ferrous Limits Custom with All Metal. I'm curious if the Target Trace plots differently than when a Ferrous Limit is applied. I'm also looking at the Audio Themes to see if they alter the Target Trace.
It appears to me that there could be a different Trace with the Ferrous Limits Custom is set to 'True' zero and using All Metal. I've come to no conclusions at this time.
If you set Ferrous Limits Preset to zero, Minelab leaves a small region at the top, it's not grayed out to alert you. I don't know what purpose that serves, might it be a software graphics error? Ferrous Limit is still being applied. One would think that an iron tone and red bar indication would be eliminated, but that's not what I'm discovering.

Thanks for sharing - I’ve seen this one. Believe it or not, this is expected behaviour for weaker low conductor targets. Equinox has done the same thing since update 2, the only difference is that it doesn’t have an ID map to visually show it doing it to the user. If you wave the target closer to the coil it will stop doing it. It is a feature that helps keep depth on weak low conductors in mineralised ground - especially important for the thin hammered coins they have in the UK and Europe.
I wouldn't call it a feature! LOL. I still don't like it though!

This 'feature' is for the UK and European soil that has coke. ("..especially important...in the UK and Europe.")
This feature is preventing me from fully utilizing the Ferrous Limits as intended.
This feature doesn't work well with a user defined non-ferrous region.
This feature actually causes False Positives, Iron Falsing.
I would like this 'feature' to have it's own On/Off 'feature'.

Minelab demonstrate to us Americans how the 'feature' benefits coke ridden UK and European soil and at the same time reduces iron falsing and saltwater falsing.
Minelab can you provide me with a ground balance validation protocol?
I'm presently embarking on creating a test protocol to validate if the Manticore ground balance is working or defective. How do I separate the 'feature' from "acceptable iron/beach falsing" vs spurious falsing and know that I have properly ground balanced the Manticore?
There are so many of us with Manticores having issues with falsing. I didn't consider that there was a 'feature' that may in part be the cause of the iron falsing and Surf & Seawater falsing, "False Positives".
It's well understood that if your ground balance is not set properly that spurious false positives occur with certain soil conditions.
During testing yesterday, I had to lower my Sensitivity to between 10 and 17 to calm the spurious falsing, that may in part be caused by the 'feature'.
Minelab please provide a video demonstration to help me showcase the 'feature' and how we should learn to accept the iron and saltwater falsing.
I will assist Minelab and inform all UA-camrs of the 'feature'.
