Insurance Coverage for Tinnitus and Hearing Loss (Why is insurance coverage so bad?)

- Why is there little to no coverage from Medicare and other health insurance for tinnitus and for hearing loss?
Medicare and commercial health insurance companies classify hearing loss and tinnitus as cosmetic or non-life threatening. Talk to anyone with debilitating tinnitus or even moderate hearing loss, and they will tell you this is 100% false. Tinnitus can cause severe anxiety and depression and even lead to suicidal thoughts in catastrophic cases.
Several research studies now prove that untreated hearing loss can be a major contributing factor to dementia. Despite this knowledge, we are not seeing the changes needed in health insurance benefits that would help more people. Until we see better coverage, we are offering more financing and payment options for patients to provide lower monthly payments that people can afford.
So the short answer is no. Medicare does not cover hearing aids or tinnitus treatment. Some supplements to Medicare may have a benefit. Still, these are often discount programs to purchase hearing aids online without the professional support and follow-up visits needed to be successful with amplification.
There has also been a bill proposed to offer a very small hearing aid benefit of $500 every five years to Medicare patients with severe to profound hearing loss, but this bill has not yet passed. We do need better commercial insurance coverage for hearing devices and hearing care to improve access and affordability. We need to start demanding that our insurance plans offer these types of benefits since we know that untreated hearing loss is one of the most modifiable risk factors for dementia. If insurance plans can offer vision and dental, they should offer more plan options that include coverage of prescription hearing instruments as well.
If you agree, contact your health insurance company or your H.R. department and ask how you might be able to add audiology services to your coverage. Oftentimes, employers have to select this additional coverage at the time they are negotiating their group's health plan. If your employer doesn't know that hearing coverage or audiology services are a priority for their employees, it will often be overlooked and therefore excluded from your plan.
One thing people can do is visit the financing page on our website at SoundRelief.com It has quick links to apply for a healthcare credit card plus a payment calculator to show monthly payment options. As always, if you need help navigating these payment options, please reach out to us for help.
