    Yarn and twine pro tip. Find the end of your yarn in the middle of the skein rather than from the outside. Pull this end and your yarn will pull neatly from the middle. Same is true of ball twines, like cotton or baling twine as well as baling wire. Much easier to keep neat without the eventual "biting" into the skein when unwinding from the outside.

    A pro tip from my knitting nanna is to start pulling your yarn from the center of the spool (the other cut end of the thread). You'll be able to pull your yarn without having to move your spool around to free it.

    I feel like a fishing bobber is the best thing to use! instead of a cork.

    Did you ever try small fishing bobbers attached to the top to keep them floating?

    Does the color leach off the yarn into the water?

    I made several of these with yarn but they lay on top of the water and will not sink. What did I do wrong? Used zip ties to hold it together

    Even though she's scary but she forgot to soak the yawn in a boiled water for at least 15 mins for excess colour dye to get released.

      wagwan6248 if it s just to put it in a container or breedingtank within a couple of steps distqnce then you cqn.Put your hand or a plate under it to prevent eggs from falling on the ground

    Super cool informative video..but what if you're doing this for tetras? I believe their eggs are non adhesive but I could be wrong...

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  8 років тому

      +The AmateurAquarist It really depends on the fish, but I prefer to move the parents at that point, or use something like latch hook mesh in the bottom of the tank, rather than a mop, or use them in combination, so if eggs fall to the bottom, they are protected from hungry mouths. I will also pick through the mops over either a hanging breeder box or a net, with species who don't have very sticky eggs.

      +Rachel O'leary that makes sense and it's probably more effective, thanks for the reply and info!

      +The AmateurAquarist For fish with non-adhesive eggs, you lay a piece of plastic screen over supports about an inch or so above the bottom of the tank, making sure that there are no openings that would allow the fish to swim under the screen. Then you weight your spawning mop so that it sinks down on top of the screen. your fish will swim down into the mop to spawn, and the eggs will fall through the mop and screen to lie, protected, on the tank floor. Many fish species like to spawn in mops because they remind them of the plants where they spawn in their native streams. Another trick that old-timers used to use when the only screen commonly available was galvanized steel, was to completely cover the floor of the spawning tank with glass marbles. (In those days, you could buy a bag of ten marbles for a dime.) On top of this, they laid spawning mops or plants. The eggs would fall in the spaces between the marbles but the marbles would be packed too close together for the fish to swim down between them and eat the eggs. I haven't heard of anyone using this technique for a great many years, but it was often mentioned in old books.

    Could you help me ID a fish? I bought a trio of "licorice gourami" and now only my male is left. I want to get him some more females but I don't know the exact species! I figure the queen of nano fish would be the person to ask :)

      corydoras, otoxinckus and any other fish that in nature or your tank leaves eggs on plants ,glass/acrylic, wood or on the caves. So the sticky eggs..fishes with sticky eggs will use the mops to spawn.
