As a California saltwater fisherman, I tend to use conventional reels as opposed to spinning tackle. I think that I can fight a fish more efficiently on conventional tackle. I have been using a light weight seven foot Fenwick rod and a two speed Ambassaduer conventional reel with 15 pound test mono for fishing the kelp beds. I have used this outfit fr over twenty years and it has help up great. If the fish start to run on the heavier size, I will switch to an eight foot 20# test bait stick with a Shimano reel and 20-25# test mono. I have landed a lot of kelp bass along with Pacific barracuda and occasional yellowtail with this light outfit. I notice that spinning gear is more in evidence with Florida fishermen.
I think snook would be #1 on my hit list for Florida species. Everyone always seems to enjoy catching them. That jack looked like it was built for power too so I bet they are fun!
Yeah they're pretty cool, I think theyre basically the largemouth bass of the ocean. I really want to get a redfish, I've caught about 6 snook but never a redfish. Jacks are insane fighters, more so than hybrids or smallmouth IMO.
I’ve been in Florida my whole life and the one fish I have yet to land is the tarpon. I’ve hooked about 5 or so, never landed one but I can tell you they’re the most exciting hands down.
Snook are best bang for "buck" . Tarpon you need to be chill, just let em beat themselves cuz you won't. Reds are strong, like F 350 HD strong. Love swfl, every day of fishing I've had has been awesome.
Nice man! I was just there last month. I was mostly at clam pass because that's where we stayed. I got a nice redfish in that big bay. A few snook too. How do u wade that muddy bottom though?
Very slowly lol. I swear I about lost my shoes every other step. Ive purchased new wading "shoes" recently tho that are basically 7mm neoprene socks that go over the ankle (w/ velcro straps), and they do really well in mud. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@@EngineeringHooksets yeah, it was a grind for me to get one. I think around the mangroves in the big bay is the best chance. Having a kayak helps because it would be a pain to try to wade it. High tide, or right before or after is best time but you already know that.
Also, it has to be a lure because i tried cut bait at the bottom and I kept getting catfish. Maybe shiners or baitfish on a bobber will work but i had trouble catching baitfish. I think the paddletail swim baits or vudu shrimps is best for that area.
Sort of. Not my first snook but that was the first snook I posted. I'm actually still holding on to the first snook video lol. By now it's over 2 years old, really need to get around to editing that haha
If this video helped you out, consider checking out my lures at engineeringhooksets.com !
Great tips! I will be in Naples for a few days this week. I'll give these spots a try!
Kudos to you my friend. Not afraid to share fishing spots 👍🏽

Thank you! And thanks for the shrimp

Awesome stuff. Always enjoyed the salt water. Don't get the opportunity to do that much anymore. Sort of miss it.
Great tips dude! Looked like a blast down there!

@@eyeTHC I feel that, I want to catch a tarpon so bad. I got broke off by a small (~30"?) one last time I was down there

Great vid 👍. I was thinking of using Shrimp for bait but would shrimp from the supermarket that is not live work aswell. Thanks!
Supermarket shrimp works too. Thanks for watching!
The bridge nets a lot of mangrove snapper. Have your license ready they come down there A LOT.

@@EngineeringHooksets cool, will definitely look at neoprene wading shoes. I was ok a kayak btw throwing a vudu shrimp when the redfish hit.
@@jj6539 I tried to catch a redfish so hard the whole week we were here and came up empty 🙃

Nice work Matt!! Be careful you might end up wanting to move to Florida. Seems like you would catch on the fisheries fast.
Thanks Wayne! It definitely has its perks
Awesome Jack, Matt. That first shot in the video, wasn't that the spot you got your first Snook a few years ago?

How did you access the water at clam pass? I was there recently and didn’t see any kind of walking trail like you walked on
We just followed the beach, look at google maps
Do you get to Drs. Pass from the north or south?
Shrimp lure works great to catch lady fish here
Those were some nice fish! Sad mine got away 😔
Rip u
Whete you park in doctor pass?
That second snapper you caught wasn’t a mangrove, it was a baby mutton snapper
Thanks for the info!
How did u get to that bridge by foot
We started at the beach and waded through the water
What lures did you use at the jack spot?
I caught that jack on a 6th sense lipless jerkbait, but the hooks completely bent out on that 1 fish, so idk if id recommend it.
The 3rd snapper looked like a mutton cuz the dot mangroves are darker too
I catch snook in that same spot every time at doctors pass
It's a good spot!
Paid parking for residents? That would suck
Indeed. Thats South Florida for you
I'd be scared of bullsharks...
Eh
Stop using lures live bait works way better if u want to catch something bigger
Everyone knows live bait works better, but artificial lures are 1000 times more fun to catch a fish on.
