Emet-Selch is one of the best written villains in any media.
Well.. depends.. Is he really the villian? .. From his and his ppl point of view he is a Hero. As he said at the end of ShB.. Someone is allways the villian in the other heros tale. Its fascinating how they humanized him and made you understand why he did a lot of atrocities in the past 10.000 years. To save the ppl he loves - especially Hythlodeus, who sacrficed himself willingly.
After his defeat he smiled to you and in the camera - freed from his burden, first time in ages standing upright, not hunches forward as in all the scenes before. And remember a certain Elezen from Ishgard: A smile better suites a Hero...
@@oliverurbanik9647 I considered him an antagonist not a villain. To be honest between shb and ew, his full arc makes him more a deuteragonist. Since he was opposing in shb and ally in ew.
People tend to forget that Emet literally killed thousands, Even millions with Allagan empire, Garlean Empire and the flood of light on the First. My man literally comitting genocides all around.
Its hard to call him a hero, even in his eyes tbh. But he is such well written.

Emet-Selch's parting words were a big part of that scene's impact not just to the WoL but the player. He gives you insight to where your journeys could lead you....and reaffirms he doesn't regret his path, but even in his defeat, he wants to see you prosper, accepting you are the inheritors of it.
Emet-Selch is the GIGA CHAD of video game characters, maybe of all fictional characters period. He is true to himself all the way to the end. Even after recovering his memories and having the full picture again, he stays true to his convictions and says, "Nope, what I did was correct." You don't have to like or agree with him, obviously. But it is SO much more satisfying than some lame ass "redemption" where he says, "Oops, my bad." He sticks to his path all the way to the end. But that said, what is his path? Saving Etheris. So he DOES help you in the end. But because the world you want to save is NOT the world HE wanted to save... he says "Thanks but no thanks" to any final reconciliation.
And that's ok, Emet. We love you for it.

Hythlo's refusal to try and take a revival is unsurprising too. While we are a continuity of sorts of their Azem, we're not them. And Hythlo wanted to go back to the start with the two of them.
That moment when the ghosts start talking...Depression: Achieved.
And then that moment when he gets to the top of the staircase and starts remembering the moments fondly...Acceptance: Achieved.
My interpretation of the Elpis Flower moment... it's not the Warrior of Light overcoming despair. It's Meteion.
There's always been this tiny bit of hope still there. Like Gandalf in LotR "There never was much hope...only a fool's hope" but still clinging to it.
I feel like that little bit of hope buried in Meteion that we proved was still there.
And that just....hits even harder for me.
It's why the scene where the flowers appear always emotionally breaks me on every rewatch of it.
Remember, Meteion is a hive mind. Even with the hundreds of versions sent out, there was still the one that remained with Hermes on Elpis. She even mentions that the answer he had been searching for had been on Etheirys the entire time. Hermes didn't want to teach her too much of Etheirys because as he put it, he didn't want to "bind" her. But he never let Meteion fully engage with the world as a base case. So she never got to really experience that hope the same way Azem and Venat did.
I just love the writing symmetry involved - where Meteion uses the elpis bloom to prove to Hermes that he's not the only one who feels sad and we use it to prove to Meteion there's still hope. Its a reminder that she isn't alone, presented in the same manner she used to let hermes know he isn't either. So good.
It's the desperate hope of what she pleads you for: that something could happen, so that her sisters would stop hurting.

My favorite moment of this section is Emit's smile just before he leaves.

Only thing I was sad he didn't do was during the forced walk portion you have a debuff with an interesting description:
Endwalker: Walking alone unto journey's end, the burden weighing heavy.
If the army of leeches wasn't following him around then maybe he would have noticed

Alisaie Will forever be my favorite scion, especially after her lines in endwalker. She's the one who wears her heart on her sleeve the most, she's never afraid to show her emotions. The other scions have a good "stoic" feeling to them but that raw emotion we get really just makes her all the more endearing.

So im 18 minutes in and I have to Say this Rich. Watching yourself, Asmongold, and Pyromancer all come from WoW and take this journey. Its been an absolute honor to watch. Thank you for being you. A part of me is jealous that he had so many people there to come with him when he ascended the crystal path G'raha made for him...but at the same time, I wish they HADN'T been there for him. I feel like this segment of the game is meant to make you feel lonely and isolated, and having a crowd walking beside you diminishes that. But crowd or no, nothing could diminish the emotional damage of Close in the Distance.
Something I just now realized: Emet made a statement "to the last of Us". Before he did not consider the sundered people, but now he sees the WoL as an equal.
I played this myself, I knew how it would end. Why am I crying again?

It doesn't work that way. The whole reason she's blind in the first place is her warping into the life stream in the first place from the end of ARR, meaning the part of her "soul/aether" that made her able to see has been purged from her being and lost to it already and repurposed elsewhere.
I think they'll eventually give her sight back, and might even have something to do with when they start exploring the other shards of the star, because pieces of your soul/aether can be wapred and twisted in different places.
also, she's not completely blind. It's the aether itself, because she's able to see only that, and the levels of it.

@@maxspecs I mean that's exactly what the ink was made out of in the classroom, when getting a lesson in Sharlyan.
I can't remember it well because it's been awhile, but in Shadowbringers, I believe she addresses it there too in how she reads when you talk to her in private about Thancred.
She's not completely blind, as she sees aether and the structure of that aether. It's more like a color blindness in a sense, rather than she just can't see simply.
Everything in FFXIV is made of aether, as that's the building blocks of their world.
Think of it more as if you saw everything that emits light, but you gained the ability to see all light emitting from everything (humans actually emit a small bit of light we can't see; xray, electromagnetic scale), and you're just getting overloaded.
That's basically her blindness.
And since Matoya is an old lady and her teacher, I'm sure she taught her a few spells that would make it easier for one to interpret ways to read, considering she's probably old and with her own sight.
Ah man. The 200 people swarming around him honestly ruined the intended experience IMO. You're supposed to feel lonely - it's quiet, empty. It really takes away from the impact of the final sequences. Of the horrible weight.
The part where you have to walk is a solo instance. At least that part was not ruined by the people.

Emet and Hythlodaeus voluntarily return to the Star in the end because it’s there time. Their work is done. Emet has safeguarded the future in his own way, and Hythlodaeus has seen the work of both of his friends to completion.

Here's a thought; in the future/past, whenever either Hades, or Hythlodeus pop up as cameos in other games, they really will be meeting us again, playing new parts. All connected by the multiversal aspects of FF like the lifestream, the random portals, Materia, Spiritus, etc.

I just realized looking back at this video again reunion is that a possible hint down the road to sephiroth. It would make sense since they are spinters of the same character much like cloud and sephiroth were. Hmm?
Cloud and Sephiroth were only splinters from the same character in kingdom hearts not in ff, in ff they are completely seperate, cloud was injected with some of sephiroths cells which made him sick and gave him a mental illness that screwed with his memories but nothing more

Anyways, I'm referring to how they could easily draw a parallel here and find a way to make a future emit into sephiroth with a reunion storyline.by saying much like how sephiroth and cloud sharing some of jenova DNA we share the same thing though azems crystal which we both held hence azems abilities were passed down to both us and emit. I'm not saying it's going to happen but the hint is there that they could use it if they so chose down the road.

that's what a good story is supposed to do. you're not supposed to just feel empathy for the characters and investment in the outcome of their story, but to also come away from it with a new perspective on your own story, having witnessed something you can relate to and see it for what it is on the outside.
6:10, this was the point, only the second time a video game has ever made me cry. It started to begin when I was at that time stamp on my play through, then right after Alisaie sealed the deal, just like she did with Rich.

I just love how Emet Selch basically spoils us the details of the next expansions like the GIGA CHAD he always has been.
Suddenly I'm struck with an alternate reality, where we sacrifice ourselves like our allies to pave the way forward. We don't know if it'll work or be in vain, but we just have to believe.
Then, an unexpected figure comes forward. Zenos. He instantly understands what happened, maybe by feeling the aether on the wind. Hungry for a challenge having traveled all this way, he fights Meteion in our stead. Dragon vs bird woman. They both strike each other and kill one another, thus saving the world still, but at the cost of all scions and ourselves.
There's a dark ending if this were the true end of the game.

Ehhh, I kind of feel like having an entourage at this point in the game takes away from the experience. I waited a few weeks to get to this point and I’m glad I did, on top of doing this zone late at night. After all the emotional gut punches up to this point, climbing the crystal path with Alphinaud and Alisae at the edge of the universe, not a single other soul in sight, and that music playing in the background…
Watching this looked more like a carnival than an emotional catharsis
Actually, I felt like having a moment where everyone shows up would have been the greatest thing ever.
I constantly think about how much I would be hated streaming this game always wanting to be left alone especially now when the story is trying to impress upon you crushing loneliness. At least that’s my assumption

I did the same! I generally wait til the mass crowd pushes through MSQ before I start it and I didn't see any other players this entire zone, it really added a lot to it and I would find myself just stopping and standing still for periods of time, looking into the endless distance. When the twins were going to leave too, it was probably the hardest of them all because I knew it would just be me.
@@Lord_Sunday SebbywebzTV's community did that to him. The moment Estienin left, while Sebby was still in the cutscene his community left him and hid til he was in the cutscene with Emet-Selch, so that when it was over, everyone was there with him. It was really cool!

lol. well, yeah they weren't going to die for real. Everyone you like dying but the mc then coming back to life is one of the oldest anime tropes ever. It happened more than once in Sailor Moon, and also in Sorcerer Hunter, Yaiba, Eto Rangers... even that victorian Snow White anime.
except the game did it in a way that justified it and made me okay with how it was done

This part honestly made no sense and was clearly fanservice. There was no reason Emet and Hythlodaeus should've showed up and it was never even explained how it even happened.
Actually it was explained. immediately after the hydaelyn fight.
Azem’s Crystal can summon the WoL’s allies from literally anywhere. And Hydaelyn gave it a temporary upgrade specifically so it could give form to souls, allowing it even summon the dead.
Even during one of Hydaelyn’s first appearances through Kryle, she spoke about sheperding Minfilia’s soul back to the source, along with “another.” So they teed up Hades’ coming back early on. And throughout the exansion they explained how it would be possible.
Is it fanservice? Yes. Is it directly explained, rationalized, and in service to the plot and the characters? Yes.

Im Glad for you :') and Honestly yes, After going through endwalker, I just sort of stopped vibing with people who even jokes abt "wanting to die" or saying stuff like that. Instant turn off even among friends. I just started really appricite what I had going for me.
I understand that you still enjoy the experience, but having all those people around you at the end area it's a lot different when it's actually empty like it's supposed to be, in a way they ruined your experience
How can you be so sure? By what little I know of Rich, he appears to be a person who understands very well what it feels like to be empty and alone. It may have ruined your experience, no question, but don't be so certain that he sees and lives in the world the way you do. There is a difference between perception and projection.
