Not only is Gene a legend he's a national treasure. One of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Living to 96 is an accomplishment within itself but to still be able to function and doing what he loves is truly amazing. God Bless him!!! 👍😎🇺🇸

@davidbarnsley8486, George Barris was 90 when he died. They lived that long by using proper safety methods while working.
I'm happy for him, he's 96 and still going strong. I'd love to see the man relax and enjoy himself, I think he'll live into 100 or better. Best wishes to you sir you'll be missed not only as a passionate individual but a true master in his craft.🎉

He is a God of customizing, long may he continue to work.
Gene is a living legend and I worked for him when he was in Canoga Park, before he moved to the Mojave Desert. He is a true pioneer in our profession and came to the Houston Autorama many times to show his craft. He stayed with me at my house in Clear Lake and drove my Camaro while here in Houston.
I've been trying to reach Gene to invite him to be a guest speaker at the Asylum, but have not been able get in touch with him. No one answers his phone and I would love to talk to him, if anyone knows how to reach him

He's earned a well deserved rest, Gene really is the KING of Kustomisers and he pretty much wrote the book on How To Customise your car.
Years ago we were fellow vendors at Goodguy events and Turkey rod run. He was a member of our Old Farts car club. Great guy and a hell of a craftsman.
He's been going since the 40's when half the cars he works with were new, so it stands to reason that he either doesn't have the desire to do it anymore, or can't find competent people to hire to keep going. I'll go with the latter, because of his willingness to try to teach others his skills. Nowadays, everyone wants to do the easy stuff, and they end up getting plain cars that everyone has copied. He is one of the EARLY pioneers of car customizing, so he didn't get to do the "easy stuff" and had to invent the looks he did. 96 years old and still going though, so he's got a lot of skills to teach. He's been customizing cars since my fiances mother was at least a kid, cause she was born in '45. I hope he sells his shop to someone who appreciates the history of it and everything in it.

Unfortunately, Gene is not going to be around much longer. He is my dear friend who i have known for many years. His selling the shop in Mojave is due to his illness and I am really going to miss him. ❤
Watched him run at El Mirage he was 85 years old and he was running 180 mph

Gene could still have a comfortable life with just opening up his home and storage areas as a museum and do tours a couple of days a week. It would be interesting to hear more about some of the problems that his shop has had, just hope it's not anything about his work. And if it's an EPA problem you'd think that at 96 years old and as little work as comes out of the shop in a year that just misplacing a little paperwork could be accomplished without a major uproar.
Time marches on.
