Hey Mike! Thank you for all the awesome reviews. I wish I had been diligent in looking at them before my purchase unfortunately I have a bit of a dilemma. I purchased a purple 4 after coming from a four seasons foam mattress. I enjoy everything about the purple 4 except 80% of the time I end up sweaty in the middle of the night usually just around my lower back, hips, and bottom. I'm cool everywhere else and my mattress feels cool to the touch otherwise. I have tried switching to cooling sheets, a cooling cover, breathable blankets etc while that helps I still wake up sweaty. I think I am experiencing what you talked about with the grid collapsing under the heaviest part of my body. I'm 215 lbs and even though I have heavier family members who sleep on the purple 3 they don't have this issue. While I did warm up on the memory foam and the memory foam held my heat I didn't sweat like this at all. Do you think one of the newer purple lines like the purple restore hybrid plus would be a better fit with not collapsing the grid? I am thinking purple and I may not be a good match in bed heaven because of this issue but I wondered your opinion and if you would recommend a heavier person try a different person and if so what brands would you recommend I research. Thanks!
I am a petite woman who weighs 114 lbs. I like a soft mattress & I am mostly a side sleeper. I am trying to decide between The purple Mattress Hybrid 4 & the Beautyrest PressureSmart Lux 2.0 plush pillowtop mattress. I am trying out the PressureSmart Lux 2.0 plush pillowtop & it feels soft on top but still has a dense feel, maybe because of the large coil count. I’m wondering if I should just try to break in the PressureSmart or exchange it for a Purple Hybrid 4. I do like to sink in a little & sleep in my bed. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Hi there -- Thanks for your comment! I'm so glad to hear you are happy with your purchase. Might you be willing to share this positive experience where even more mattress shoppers can benefit from it? This bed was highly recommended for me when I took the goodbed quiz. The problem was I grew up with a pool and it felt too much like I was floating on an air mattress again in that pool. I couldn't justify the astronomical price tag of this bed thinking I'd be swimming and not sleeping.
Ha, that's totally fair. This mattress does indeed have a unique feel, which will suit some people's preferences more than others. Hopefully you got some other recommendations from the quiz that were more up your alley. Thanks for your comment.
I would strongly recommend a good adjustable base for this mattress. It feels incredible when using massage and zero g features; even more so than other mattresses using those features. Plus you’re already spending a lot, but that’s just my opinion.
@@jimv1484 Yes, we recommend lots of different latex and latex hybrid mattresses, though the particulars of which one(s) we might recommend for you will depend on your "personal mattress criteria" -- which is what we ask you about in our mattress matching quiz. If there are latex mattresses that we'd recommend for you, the ones we think are the best match for you will show up in your quiz results. And once you've taken the quiz, you can search for other mattresses on the site and see your match score populated for those as well. @@14k.alexxx It's been great overall! I ordered the Purple 2 initially, but it felt a tad too firm since I'm mostly a side sleeper, so upgraded to Purple 3. My only complaint is the mattress is quite heavy and it has no side handles.
@@kvntree it's all preference. The 4 allows you sink in a little more which would be better for a side sleeper. It also depends on a person's weight so someone heavier that is a side sleeper would probably prefer the 4. I personally have a 3 but I mostly sleep on my back and I'm quite heavy at 300+. We've had our mattress for at least 7 years and zero complaints. It's held it's shape this whole time even when we had it folded in half for almost 2 months while being in storage when we moved from one state to another. If possible, find a mattress store near you that has purple mattresses and try it out.
Hi Shannon -- Thanks for your question. The taller 4" grid does give it a noticeably different feel, by enhancing that "lying on top of blades of grass" sensation which we described in the video. Some people really like this, so from a comfort preference standpoint, that will be a meaningful difference for them. Likewise, people who are particularly curvy (ie, very broad shoulders or hips) will benefit from the additional inch of conformance that you get with the taller grid. But if you are not someone that appreciates the difference on one of those fronts, then you are probably just as well off getting the 3" grid IMHO. I hope that's helpful.
We are considering getting a split king hybrid 3. Will the support edge border around the grid be a problem in the split king since it will run through the center of the bed?
Hi Teri -- Thanks for your question. I think if anything, you'll notice the split more so than you'll notice the edge support rail. For example, you'll be able to lie in the middle of the mattress on your back without falling into the crack but you wouldn't want to lie right on that crack on your shoulder. As for the edge support rail, the top part if it (which is even with the gel grid) is actually a little softer than the lower part (which is even with the coils). This sacrifices a little bit of strength on the edge, but the benefit is to make the foam rail less noticeable and more seamless. FYI, we actually covered this particular point in more detail in our original review of this product. You can see the edge support section of that review here: ua-cam.com/video/vijvjeU9_Sw/v-deo.html I hope that's helpful.
Hi Ron -- Thanks for pointing this out. I've looked into this and you are right that 168 lbs is the correct number. We were going off of the shipping weight on the package, but it seems that in this case that number was way off. We will note this correction in the description of this video and will update our written review accordingly. Thanks again for bringing this to our attention.
Of the old models - yes! However, Purple has just updated their entire lineup, and the Purple 4 no longer exists as such. Still, you might be able to find this on clearance at a local retailer.
Hi there -- Thanks for your question. AFAIK Sealy (not Serta) did mention plans to release a gel grid mattress next year in one of their recent earnings calls. However, no other information has been released on this. I can't speculate on how likely this is to come to fruition, how the construction of such a mattress would compare to the Purple mattresses, or how they will get around the patents that exist on this material. Sorry we can't be of more help on this one.
Hi there -- Thanks for your comment. Here's our overview of the Beautyrest Harmony Lux collection: www.goodbed.com/reviews/beautyrest-harmony-lux-mattress-preview/ I hope that's helpful.
Hi there -- Thanks for your question. I'm afraid this isn't a question that an honest expert can answer. First of all, mattresses are highly personal, so neither of these are better than the other on any kind of absolute terms. Second, Tempur-Pedic makes a fairly wide range of mattresses with different feels, features, and price points. Third, speaking in generalities, the characteristics of the Purple Hybrid Premier 4 (the mattress shown in this video) tend to be VERY different from any of the models in the Tempur-Pedic line -- so much so that it's hard to imagine that anyone could be equally happy on a Purple Hybrid and a Tempur-Pedic. To help you choose, I'd suggest watching our coverage of the Tempur-Breeze line for comparison purposes. Together with this video, that should give you a very strong sense of which direction will be better for you. You can find that video here: www.goodbed.com/reviews/tempur-breeze-mattress-preview/ I hope that's helpful.
This mattress is discontinued as of June 2023. Purple no longer sells any mattress with 4” of purple grid, only 3”. They renamed it and call it an “upgrade” if you can believe that marketing BS. It sounds like a cost-cutting measure.
Hey there! That's a valid concern. Though in our case - we think the updated Purple models might actually be an improvement. These should have a slightly more nuanced feel with a blend of pressure relieving foams and the Purple Grid. We haven't tested these yet, but we're excited to do so in the future.
@@razorback9926 Ah sorry to hear that. Yeah, mattresses are highly personal so that's certainly not the way we would have presented it. Still, if it's working well for you then you might have lucked out and got one before the switch? And if it's not working out for you then you might have a valid case with Purple.

DON'T BUY IT
Hi Jorge -- Thanks for your comment. That's a very unusual problem to be having with this mattress. In general, the only thing that can cause squeaks in a mattress is metal rubbing against metal. As you can see in our video, the only metal inside this mattress is in the form of springs that are each encased in their own fabric pocket, which prevents the metal in one spring from touching the metal in any other springs. In this way, this type of mattress design generally prevents the possibility of any kind of squeaking. To that point, I've never heard of anyone else having this complaint about a Purple Hybrid mattress. So if you are hearing metal rubbing against metal, and if it is indeed coming from inside the mattress, then there is definitely a defect with the mattress you received. TBH I'm not sure whether this type of defect is covered under Purple's warranty, but I'd recommend reading it to see what it says about that. I hope that's helpful.
