  • I am building a model of the USS Defiant from Star Trek: Deep Space 9. I am learning new modeling skills along the way, and I want to share my journey.
    In this video, I finish all the painting, add the decals and final detail pieces, and create the display stand. The video is another long one, but I didn't want to split it up because I'm eager to show you the finished project! It has been a fantastic journey, and I'm happy to share it.
    This model is the kit from AMT/ERTL that was released in the 1990s and has been on my shelf since then. I've made modifications to the original parts, added aftermarket parts, installed lighting, and given it a custom paint job.
    Thanks for watching!

    One of the better jobs I have seen on this kit. Most people do great work on this kit but they leave the seams highly visisble.....the kit deserves maximum effort. I have built this kit but it was destroyed back in 2005 in a house fire. but it burned up with no visible seems. 😁🤣😂

    Nice 🖖 you brought life into that old model i remember building it when it was first released in the 90's & i was disappointed that the engines and deflector were not molded in clear for lighting 🤷🏾‍♂️ I see you fix that issue 👍

      Thanks! 🖖 This model has its pros and cons for lighting. The lack of clear parts is a challenge for sure. But the relative openness and simplicity of the interior is really what made me choose this as my first model to attempt lighting.

    Excellent work Mistake Man! The paint and the scribing are beyond expert on this. I really like the base paint. Taking something simple and giving that twist, made a huge impression. Looking forward to the next build!

      Thank you! I really appreciate the compliments. I've got a couple other builds in the works, so I should have another video out before long.

    Great build! What was your main colour used please?

    • @mistakeman
      @mistakeman  Рік тому +1

      @jimboh1 Thank you! I used custom mixed colors for the base hull and panels. They are all mixed from craft acrylic paints from the brands Ceramcoat and FolkArt. The base hull color is a 6-to-1 mix of white and FolkArt Silver Marlin. If you can't find the FolkArt color, I noticed that Ceramcoat has a nearly identical color named Dolphin Gray that would work just as well.
      If you want to see the full breakdown of all the custom colors I used, I discuss it in my part 3 build video. There is a full list of colors and mix ratios at 36 minutes and 13 seconds into that video. Here is a link to that timestamp: ua-cam.com/video/wqbo9nAejf0/v-deo.html

    Did you lock down the decals and remove the shine with a flat coat? I couldn't tell.

      Hi, yes, I sprayed over the decals with Duplicolor Wheel Matte Clearcoat.

    Question how did you get the The circles to light up

    • @mistakeman
      @mistakeman  Рік тому +1

      If you mean the 8 blue circles on top, they are not lit directly, but by the same white COB strips that provide light for the windows. There is enough light reflecting around inside the model to illuminate the blue circles. The inside surface of the model is painted white to help with this effect. The blue color comes from the clear blue plastic that the circle pieces are made of.

      Ok cool I'll have to try that I got the model in my stash but haven't gotten to it yet I enjoyed the video

      @@aaronvandoorn1276 Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed the video! The way I lit the blue rings, they weren't very bright. I like the dimmer look on those features, but if you want them to be a little brighter, you could supplement the lighting by putting one or more extra lights close to the circles. I ended up doing this on the two red trapezoid shaped features behind the blue circles because the red features were a little too dim for me. I cover this in my video on the lighting of this kit. It was one of the first videos I created for UA-cam, so it's just a slide show, but it shows everything I did for lighting.
