Pretty sure the backing track is "Migawari no Shinnyu" listed as "Substitute Invasion" on the NA release of the End of Evangelion soundtrack. Makes sense at least, since that track is Thanatos without the vocals.
The song of rei´s 2 death. In the OVA Death and Rebirth. Is the most dramatic moment in the whole serie. By the way somebody has read the fanfic "The angel that just won´t die"? In the chapters 11 and 12 remember me this precious song.

Something tells me thought that the shred bit right when switching to distortion is simply the G melodic minor bit from 0:44 embellished a bit
