Funny thing, SAO was written for the same Light Novel publisher contest that .//hack was. .//hack won. It wasn't until Kawahara submitted Accel World that he got published, and he had to clean up SAO from the Web Novel it was to publish. Granted, I like both SAO and .//hack, as both stories entertain me.
