When I was in my teens back in the 70's I helped the neighbor on his farm. He had a Farmall 400, International 666 and an International 1466. I drove all three but really fond of the 1466. Fit a lot of ground with it as well as plowed. We used the 400 to mow and rake hay/straw. Then use the 666 to pull a International 430(?) baler. I and my brothers would buck the bale's and run the 400 back and forth from the field to the barn. Good old days. We worked our tails off but we had fun! Sure miss those days.
That 770 was a great rig .. looked like they were in a pretty high gear and really moving across the fiel too! Funny how the sound of those old engines gets imprinted in our memories forever :)
The last 2 gentlemen earned my respect. I have done that job many times over and my stacking skills would not come close to that on my best day. Happy 4th of JUly!!!! I am proud to be an American!!!!! The best country in the world without a rival to be found!!!!!!!!! Get Some!!!!!!!
Brings back memories. 47 years ago I baled hay and straw with a 175 Allis Chalmers and John Deere 336 baler Lancaster County, PA, used the straw for bedding and sold the alfalfa over the winter at local auctions.
In 1964 I started picking up these square bales for half a cent a bale. In 1968 was getting two cents a bale. Sure made appreciate the better jobs later in life.
The John Deere 348 around the 9:45 mark sounded like it was baling up scrap metal, not the usual mechanical noises that hypnotize like most small square balers.
Thanks for sharing the video. I really miss baling with my 1066 and New Holland 575 with a kicker. Now days I am just round baling and I like baling with my 5088 and New Holland 7070.
That 770 Oliver brings back memories. Used to stack hay behind one as a young teenager. The guy I would help always set the baler to 90lbs, so many strings broke and he carried the water right next to the transmission so it was nice and warm. Oh what memories.
Back in 1968 Dad did custom haying for a guy on 1000 acres of alfalfa 4 cuttings a year. Sister at 14 ran the new John Deere 880 swather and knocked down 100 acres a day. Mom Brother and Dad baled at night with the dew on with three John Deere 215 Wire tie balers. I ran the HaroBed and could stack 4000 bales a day. He paid me .03 per bale. Not bad wages for a kid in school
That brought back memories especially the IH 430 same baler my dad had, used to bale 7 or 8 thousand bales every summer. Would not have traded those memories for anything thanks for another great video BTP !
Thanks! I cannot imagine how difficult it is to unsort flung bales from the trailer and into the barn....would never have such a set up. Gimme a drag type bale accumulator if I cannot find a bale wagon. Love those old tractors and still amazes me how much work a 50+ year old tractor can do. Love those old Olivers -
I suspect there's a fair amount of bale breakage too. I do love that kicker on the back of that John Deere baler though ... flicks then back like don't weight anything!
Did up to 18,000 bales a year, wasn’t difficult to unload. Maybe a couple broken bales a day. 1 person baling, 1 driving wagons back n forth, 3 in barn, 1 in wagon! Two in mound stacking.
Thank you for the $5. That is very kind. Kick balers we’re very common where I grew up in WNY. It’s not too hard working through the jumble. Stack wagons and accumulators are the way to go.
For many years my dad bailed with an 850 new Holland baler behind many tractors. His dad bought it new in the 70s and dad ran it till 2009. The most memorable tractors he ran it with included an 884 international my uncle had, a 1210 case David brown, 930 case, but the itchiest award goes to the 570 Cockshutt, but that tractor had a nice pto setup for bailing with.
It's always neat to see a baler at work😁👍 that brings back memories of my grandpa and dad baling with an old welger baler. It's still sitting in the shed, waiting to get used again, maybe someday🙄
Great video. Reminded me of all those hot summer days with my dad driving my John Deere 4010 diesel pulling a New Holland square baler and me stacking the wagons. We pulled the wagons in with our John Deere A and B tractors and unloaded them in the morning when it was cooler. It is such a shame we are losing small family farms. I hope you do more videos like this.
Very nice on a 4010. Those were days. I grew up 7 miles from town and there were 7 dairy farms on the way to town. Every one was a different brand. Today there is only one dairy and one grain farm.
I can say the same thing. There were a lot of small dairy farms around the area I grew up in back in the 1970s and early 1980s. Our local cheese company got all of their milk from these dairy farms. Today that same company gets no milk from the area and has to have it all shipped in from other states.
The 'ol 770 does Well! .... Them New Holland "kickers" are the Best! We had a self propelled N.H. Kicker when I was a kid. + 20' wagons.... powered by 400 D Farrmall..
It was nice seeing all this new-fangled bale handling equipment in action, and also traditional methods including the two hand-loaded trailers. Even some open-station tractors, including one with the umbrella that brought back memories of hot summers in the Sacramento Valley. Too bad you didn't find any of the old tractors we used at work. I suppose there aren't many still in action.
We still run older IH tractors on our hay equipment. Bale with an 856 open station on a NH 273 and a 5088 on a 565 with a thrower. We bought a Vermeer 504R last year and we run that on our 986
For small squaring my favorite tractor is a John Deere 4440 (like in awesome farm machinery vhs). I hope to drive one someday and a 4430 to haul the wagons back and forth.
Greetings. Our farm is located in east central Wisconsin. We bale a large amount of dry hay into small square bales. We have modern equipment hay equipment for our operation, except one tractor. We use a 1980 2wd open station Ford 7700 on the main baler. The baler is a 2022 New Holland BC5070. It is equipped with hydraulic pick-up, hydraulic swing, hydro-formatic tension, and a model 72 thrower with hydraulic steer. We have a moisture sensor mounted in the bale chamber. We also added another amenity. We have a 12 volt electric motor on the bale tension adjustment and have that control on the tractor. It's a great feature.
I'm my day a 2130 ran that baler, when the ford 6610 was cutting with a JD haybine and a 7710 4x4 was chopping. The ih 886 was on the silo blower. The ford 4000 was on silage wagon duty when it wasn't running a 499 haybine. Big time operation. We did a lot of acres of hay and corn with those units.
we just picked up a 2nd 568 with net, i love seeing vids on bale bunching, gathering and carting, all the different inventions or ideas on the same challenge, especially rounds
Ya haven't lived unless you stack a wagon behind one of those John Deere kickers. Lol We ran a 6080 Allis Chalmers and JD 327 baler. Pulled wagons with the 4020.

@bigtractorpower yea saves time and also makes it easier if ya sell bales to have the customer come pick them up from the field, making less bales having to hauled back to the farm
For my great uncle and cousins that I help, they/we use a 569 premium. Wether it’s on a 4430,4455, or 7800 depends entirely on what’s running correctly 😂 also an Oliver 620 square baler on a Deere 4040 or an Oliver 550 gas
Always found a 100hp and bigger tractor to be overkill for small square balers. Case in point one year we were baling hay and the only tractor we could use was our Deutz D 100 06 my brother was baling and got curious he put the PTO into 1000rpm and ran the tractor a little faster than idle didn't have any issue running the baler like that.
With most balers that's probably true. My neighbor has a Hesston inline baler and it sounds like his mtx135 has its work cut out for it on the hills around here
I remember Dad had bought a JD square baler with the thrower, always asked Dad if we could jump up in there to ride the bale,he just looked at us and shake his head
Thank goodness for tractor cabs.
And Air Conditioning.
They were big advancement.

Great collection of classic balers! can someone tell me what the fluid tank on the New Holland baler is for? I've never seen that before.
I believe it sprays a preservative (propionic acid) on the hay at the pickup so you can bale when the hay is a little greener.
The tanks have a citric acid in them that acts as a preservative to prevent mold.
