Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. He was in the position to either commit suicide in real real life or to write a song about it and die within that song. Luckily he choose the latter option. He is the poet, "killed" by the pendulum. And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat. It gives me a shiver every time.
As this song is so emotional for him all the others have an eye on him. He even had his the vocals turned off in his in ears.

"And afterwards there is darkness, silence and just a fading heartbeat"
And then the Mother and Father part begins. I noticed that in this part the piano layer resembles the sound of a cardiogram monitoring the work of the heart(d6 note I belive). It seems that those who helped him survive were his parents.

Greetings from Finland & thanks for reacting to one of the classics of Nightwish. To demonstrate the precision of Tuomas' songwriting/composing, it takes exactly three minutes from when the young boy's voice says "Now I only have three minutes and counting" to the point when Tuomas makes his hand gesture of cutting his own throat.
P.S. There's also a demo version of this song on UA-cam in which Marko Hietala, their bassist/backup-/occasional lead vocalist, sings all the parts of this song & does an amazing job.

Tuomas has said in an interview that when they perform this song, he has the sound engineers turn off the vocal feed to his in-ears because of how personal and painful it still is. Also, from the moment the kid whispers, "I have only three minutes and counting" to when the pendulum falls and Tuomas slashes his throat, is exactly three minutes.

Tuomas likes to write songs in sections like movie scores instead of classic pop/rock songs. ”The Greatest Show on Earth” is in five parts aswell and you need to react to it. It’s about evolution, from the birth of our planet till the end of mankind. Beautifully narrated by Richard Dawkins. React to the ”Live from Tampere” version and you have reacted to the ”big 3” songs by Nightwish (Ghost Love Score, Poet and the Pendulum, Greatest Show on Earth”). I really think that GSOE is the pinnacle of any live performance ever by any band or artist.

It obviously isn't literal. Since this is about Tarja being let go. They were childhood friends. That is why it was Sooo hard on him.

People get upset with pausing......as another viewer i get it,i totally do. But remember guys,my boy is a REACTOR. Reaction channels do more then just sit back and watch the entire thing, they also need to put words to what they are experiencing, watching & hearing. (And with certain artists/bands....lets not forget to avoid copyright strikes) Now i will be the first to say this, there are certain channels that goes abit over the top. It seems they want more attention then the actual reaction and what not. But i feel like G&T Reactions does a entertaining and good fine balance here, never once had a feeling like "okay stop pausing dude!","stop being soo extra and theatrical!" or "ok stop talking!" lol. I have also kind of tired abit over thousands of vocal coaches trying to analyze Floor to death in theese videos. Basically because most of them say the same thing we have allready heard over and over. Might be just my imagination, but it seems like UA-cam had a big bang of "vocal coaches" busting out of the woodwork, after Nightwish blew up on YT. Dont get me wrong,i love to listen to good vocal coaches who explains to you just how great a singer is. You learn to appreciate your favourite vocalists in a more technical descibed way too. Anyway, this channel i quickly appreciated as it is very chill, and a fun place to hang out at. One of my favourite vocal coaches (a woman) actually said a thing noone had pointed out before her. She highlighted how Floor desended the exact same notes LIVE,over and over flawlessly on that final part about his parents comforting, embracing and telling him to hang in there. The parts she was highlighting were theese ones ----> 17:58 The rest is history,as Floor is the absolute best storyteller........because she puts soo much emotion in every vocal she delievers, making everyone feel what Tuomas went through back in the day. Heavy depression is no joke, and it dances around inside you like the devil, when you least expect it. Had my fair share of danceoffs with it myself, and it just drains you of energy, ruins your good mood, intoxicates your positive way of thinking. You basically see no light in that long tunnel....dont wish that upon anyone. People have said to me "imagine,he climbed up to mount everest and survived",and expected me to praise him. I had to answer "you tell me when he has taken several walks with depression and anxiethy",to me thats a far more impressive battle or accomplishment then anyone willingly doing any type of activity like that. Dont get me wrong though,i can jawdrop from a guy surviving a trip to Mount Everest,as i have seen the documentaries since i was a kid or a young teen. That mountain is in many ways a serial killer, one of the greatest at that too. So people walking down from that....they are lucky! But im glad i had the experiences with depression etc, because that actually made me soo much smarter on life itself. Anyone out there "dancing with the devil" on a daily, weekly, monthly, yearly basis, you guys and girls are the true freaking champions to me! I salute you! It takes endless amount of energy,patience,stubborness....you name it,to fight it off. And with the right help (each individual is different,so they need slightly different type of help, they need to search within themselfs and find that out, what is the better solutions) So thats why i will say that Tuomas Holopainen is a freaking savage and a true champion to me! I felt every word he put into this song,i understood him. I have been in deep depression,i have written off notes while i was in my deepest depression, and its scarely accurate to what Tuomas felt. And with that experience, guys like me,Tuomas and others will be the best help towards others that struggle with it now. I had several shrinks, noone really worked for me. Not until i met people who decided to join mental health helping others, because they had experienced it firsthand themselfs. Thoose were the ones that knew how to give me tips and suggestions that worked for me,and conversations that made my intoxicated mind go "oh wow,im not alone in having this". A normal shrink that only have been reading outdated books about the subject, will just try ripping up your past over and over.......maybe it helps someone,i have no doubt. But in my case that wasnt the case. It was just the feeling of wounds healing, that got ripped open again and again for me,so they really didnt do much for me in the long run. But yeah, thats why Floors performance in this gets me abit teary eyed, every single time.... She is just too damned good! I felt it when she was upset and angry by herself or with Marco, and i felt it when she "spoke through Toumases parents" and in general got emotional. Marco delievered absolutely brilliant as being furious on the mass media, some of the fans unfortunately (there were some real nasty rumors, nicknames and what not started by "fans") He just got a massive amount of hate over such a extent of time, that i believe Marcos angry vocals are Marco letting out anger in the name of art,on behalf of his close friend. Thats why all the guys gathered up around Tuomas at the end there, they knew this song was hard to perform for him,so they looked at him like "we are here for you, brother!". Floor also looking over at him a few times towards the end reassuring herself that he was okay. I said it once, this band dont treat eachother like friends......they treat eachother like family!🥰 I felt bad for the guys over so many years, first the nasty breakup with theyr original singer, mainly because of her controlling, manipulative, evilminded manager and husband. Theyr angriest song is about him and there i have never heard Marco unleash such a beatmode in vocals,he is relentless! So imagine just how bad this a-hole stomped on theyr feet,to have Marco sound like that. You know when you eventually listen to it,its called "Master Passion Greed". It is never played live, because that jackass threatened with a lawsuit if that ever happened. Same goes for a music video sadly. But "Bye Bye Beautiful" wich is theyr message to the original singer, has its own music video. Probably the highest view number of any metal song out there. Nightwish at theyr most heavy and aggressive by a mile. They also dont play theese songs anymore (the poet and the pendulum included),as they are in a much healthier, happier place today. Like i said, also a reason why i love Floor above anyone else. She came in and the guys felt they could finally breathe easy, theyr hearts were at peace, and they got the best chemistry i have ever seen in any band. Troy wich joined around the same time as Floor has publicly spoken up that he didnt like theyr original singer for numberous reasons. I must admit,i loved Tarja back in the day. But after Floor came in,i would not for the life of me go back. Today i see more clearly how cold Tarja was on stage compared to Floor, how limited her vocals were.....Floor is several levels above, pure and simple. And even her personality attracts more and more people into Nightwish as we speak, they have been on a several years long UA-cam hype now. Sorry for the length, but it was mostly about the songs own subject, and it has been a passionate fighting cause for me for many years allready. Not many years back in time,it was considered taboo to speak about. (people thought you were a complete nutcase lmao)

Since her termination, Nightwish has gone on to bigger success and Tarja has established a successful solo career for herself. In 2017, Tarja did an interview saying she and Marko have made amends and are friends, once again. Marko confirmed that. Pretty Cool.

Basically the song is about the firing of their very first vocalist Tarja Turunen that has been a part of the band from the start. Tuomas and Tarja have been close friends from childhood onward and he was also the person who asked her to join. So firing her from the band was a hard thing for him to do. Because he knew he was also loosing a dear friend. But ever since she met, her now husband and manager, convinced her that she was the star of the band and would be better of solo, the atmosphere in the band deteriorated. Although it was decided that she would record one more album with the band before going solo things got so bad by the end of their last tour with her they decided to make a clean break after their last concert of the tour (The end of era was the last show released as dvd). I think you can kind of see the tension in the band if you take a closer look at it. They fired her directly after the show was done by handing her a letter. To be clear to the fans on why they thought this was necessary they published the letter on line at the same time (not the best way to handle this). Although they had expected some critique they were totally surprised by the enormous backlash they received from the press and fans. The biggest brunt of the backlash was directed at Tuomas directly who was thrown in to a depression because of this. He also did no longer see a future for the band he had worked so hard for. He considered suicide but knew this would hurt his close family and friends so he decided to commit suicide artistically by this song. At one point he even moved back in to the house of his parents (mother and father) who put him back together again and this gave him the strength to make a new start.
The next song you really should take a look at is "Dead boy's poem" live in Buenos Aires. ua-cam.com/video/S8E3L7ggLMM/v-deo.html

Hi there, great reaction. So, since several people have suggested that you react to the Greatest Show on Earth, I am assuming you are going to do so at some point in the near future. Make sure that when you do so, you react to the correct version. The correct version, in this case, is The Greatest Show on Earth life at Tampere. There is a 17 minute version and a 21 minute one and the latter is the correct one. Here is the link to what I am pretty sure is the correct version: ua-cam.com/video/45brzDJKZ3o/v-deo.html

G&T Reactions Yeah, that is fine, I just wanted to be in time. A lot of reacters react to the wrong version after which, most of the time, Nightwish army slaughter ensues, so I just wanted to give you a heads up. :)

It’s only 1 song with 5 parts... and described a very unhappy part of Nightwish history - especially of Toumas and her first singer Tarja.... good reaction anyway...
These live performances are sooooo insane. They hit directly your soul... and believe me, you can watch it 100 times, it’s always same emotion. And every time I understand a little bit more of the songtext - it’s so deep....

You have felt what everyone calls "the floorgasm!" I advise you to listen to Epica, another group of this style and especially the title "sancta terra feat Floor Janssens". The singer, Simones simons, is also in the same register but more punchy. A feast for the ears and an anthology show. Thank you for loving Nightwish, the best hard fantasy band in the world.
